An Ant Nest!

user posted image

The insect was pushed back a short ways by Ash's foot, but didn't have enough time to retaliate before the water spell came crashing down on it. Or, more like through it. The blade of water sliced right through the Ant's exoskeleton, leaving its red carcass on the rough floor.

But then came the other Ant, snapping as it neared Ash. Wanting revenge for its fallen companion, it glared at the human angrily.

Ash obtained Insect Skin and an Insect Jaw.

This game was getting tiring. Exploring dark caves had never been his favourite hobby, and magic had always been, in his mind, a precise science to be practiced in controlled environments. All this improvisation and jumping around was draining his stamina much faster than he had anticipated.

Moving around the narrow passage wasn't nearly as easy when doing it backwards. What had seemed like a few steps when he first moved through it was now becoming a labyrinth of sharp rocks that tore his clothes and bruised his skin, all while the ant, much more used to the environment, gained terrain on him.

He didn't have the time to complete the spell again before it got on him, and had no chance to get away either.. so there was only a sensible thing to do. Lowering himself in a more stable stance, he pointed the staff towards the advancing ant, not unlike a spear, and started chanting. With some luck, the insect would be too busy steering clear.. or biting.. on the piece of wood to actually attack him before he was ready.

The distraction caught the Ant's eye, and it fell for it. Latching on to the new threat before it, the wooden staff, the Ant's pincers dug into the wood, and snapped dangerously. Too much of this, and it might have been able to snap the end of the staff off, but for now, Ash would only have to deal with a few scratch marks. Ants were strong, and their jaws were sharp, but they couldn't do much damage when solid objects were their foe.

Stupid.. stupid.. stupid.. ant!
Ash cursed under his breath, one more step backward as the powerful jaws made a new cut in his already battered clothes. He took one tentative swing at the monster with his staff, but the wood bounced easily and harmlessly upon the creature's hard chitin.

"Just.. die.. already!" A curse and a whispered wish as he improvised another formula to hit the creature with a spell, cutting some corners to complete it in time. The stream of water was feebler, but perhaps it would at least disorient the beast long enough to deliver a finishing blow.

Cold sweat was starting to form on Ash's forehead, and his vision got blurry for a second, signs that he was beginning to overextend himself with magic.
Just.. one.. more..

Victory!

Even if the water spell was meant to disorient the Ant for a while, Ash got lucky and killed the monster. How, thought, we're not quite sure...

Ash obtained Insect Jaws, and Insect Skin.
