SOPHIE ANNE BARSTOW
I'm alone, on my own, and that's all I know
I'll be strong, I'll be wrong, oh but life goes on
I'm just a girl, trying to find a place in
This world

personality: When one first meets Sophie the first thing you’ll notice about her is that she’s rather quiet and reserved, never the first one to join in on social or group activities. Preferring to spend her time in her dorm studying, reading, listening to music or out running; all singular activities. She’s been that way ever since she came to Cedar Creek because she felt then and still does now like an outsider and simply out of her element and comfort zone. She’s the person who you’ve been in the same class with for years and always shows up everyday but never says anything and you don’t really know them that well, she rarely ever speaks up in class preferring to simply listen although she is quite smart. She’s no Einstein by a long shot but she’s no blubbering idiot either; which gives some people the impression that she’s a snob. Since she rarely talks to anyone but her close friends and there’s always that slight awkwardness whenever she’s around some get the impression that she thinks that just because she came her from the US on a full scholarship for football that she’s better than the rest. When really it’s the complete opposite.

Sophie is the one person that will always keep herself down, she’s so hard on herself in everything she does never thinking that any of it is good enough until she gets a hundred percent on a test, or wins a game or scores a goal. Whatever it is, if she doesn’t feel as if she’s done the best she could do she won’t agree completely with whatever anyone tells her, even if she nods and smiles and says thank you for the compliments in the back of her mind there will always be that nagging feeling that she could’ve done more. Which in turn translates to her caring what others think, it’s an annoying trait that she tries to pretend that she doesn’t have and wants it to go away but it won’t. Never being completely sure of herself doesn’t help her social skills either.

The only place Sophie feels completely confident in herself is on the field, kicking the ball around, running, feeling the burning in her lungs when she’s working as hard as she possibly can she doesn’t care whether or not she’s playing in front of a sold out crowd in her bathing suit. All that she notices and cares about is the ball and herself, everyone else just melts away which is something that helps her get through the stress of everyday, being able to shut out everyone and everything and only focus on herself. However for how she is Sophie is a completely different person when she feels comfortable around you, she’s a lot more chatty and sarcastic always joking around which is the side of her that a rare few get to see. She is also very competitive; never wanting to lose in anything she doesn’t like to back down from challenges as she doesn’t see herself as a quitter but her quiet nature most of the time inhibits her competitive one.

Not one for confrontation Sophie isn’t good when it comes to touchy subjects; which makes her a pretty easy target for people to pick on or throw insults at. Which she’s had her fair share of since coming to Cedar Creek and although she hates it she can rarely ever come up with a comeback and even if she does come up with one she’d never get up the guts to actually say it to someone’s face. Although she is slightly naïve, thinking that people will be sympathetic or nice and therefore she’s nice to them first and always eager to please she’ll do anything to make someone happy although that leads to her being taken advantage of which she wouldn’t even notice anyways because she’d just see it as being a nice person. That comes from her fear of disappointing others, its probably one of her biggest stress causes as she can’t handle the feeling of knowing she disappointed someone it makes her feel completely incompetent and stupid and so she doesn’t like to take on responsibilities when someone is expecting someone of her as she has the fear that she’ll disappoint them. It’s one of her biggest downfalls when it comes to soccer as she takes every loss personally and feels as if she let everyone down when really it probably wasn’t even her fault.

    background:
Sophie Anne Barstow was born July 13, 1988 on a beautiful summer morning in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her parents Don and Amelia Barstow couldn’t be happier as she was their first and only child. Growing up Sophie had a pretty modest upbringing, her family owned a little restaurant that wasn’t the most popular thing but they got by and that was really where she grew up. Her mother after she was born couldn’t stay away from the restaurant for very long as she missed it to much eventually just brought Sophie with her to work practically everyday so she spent most of her childhood there, playing games and getting to know the servers and cooks. Growing up around people all the time made her a pretty outgoing kid and generally wasn’t shy in any situation and since she’d spent so much time at that restaurant she felt as if she had free reign. So like any crazy five year old she took advantage of it by running rampant throughout, causing mischief wherever she went like knocking things off the shelves in the storeroom, or dumping all the sugar, salt and pepper shakers all over the floor or table. She was a fast learner and after watching the servers fill up the shakers she figured out how to do it to and would switch the sugar and salt. Boy did she get a kick out of watching the customer’s faces when their coffee suddenly tasted even bitterer and their food sweeter.

It wasn’t long before her parents realized that they couldn’t let her continue to do this as they would eventually have no more customers coming or they’d simply be to busy worrying about Sophie to run the business, so to help her expel all that energy they enrolled her in soccer. From the instant she started it was like she and the ball were one, it was very obvious that she was a natural with the ball and had no problems taking control or the lead on her team. As she got older she left the pansy house league stuff behind her and began playing for club teams getting better and better and moving up in the ranks until she was the starting attacking midfielder on her team. She continued like this all throughout her teens and when she reached high school and began playing for her school team she would always get questions of whether or not she was going to play for a university team and although she’d always dreamed of it Sophie simply didn’t know if her family could afford it, in fact she knew they couldn’t.

While the restaurant was a good business it wasn’t drawing in the revenue that they needed to even contemplate her going to a top school, so she knew that if she had any chance that she’d have to get a full ride scholarship which wasn’t going to be easy. It was this combined with her generally humble personality that made her probably one of the lesser in your face girls on her team always studying and not going to parties that she was invited to and turning down dates, all she cared about was getting a scholarship. Of course she changed completely when on the field, going from a mouse to pitbull, she became animated and fierce never giving up. It was one of the things that one of the scouts for Cedar Creek complimented her on when he came to talk to her after one of her games; it was then that her life changed. The school offered her a full ride scholarship to play soccer for them over in England which floored Sophie to no belief as they had come a long ways to scout players and when she asked the scout why they weren’t looking at players in England he said they were but they wanted to see what else was out there.

Moving to England was probably one of the scariest things Sophie has ever done, at first her family hadn’t known where she would stay when on school breaks as it would cost a chunk of change for just one ticket to and from the states and they wouldn’t be able to afford a few a year. Her mom then suggested that maybe she could stay with her aunt and uncle who lived in London, it was her moms sister and Sophie had only ever remembered meeting them once or twice in her life and she wasn’t jazzed about the idea but knew it was really her only option. At first living with her aunt, uncle and cousin was pretty awkward and soon she discovered that she and her cousin would probably never really get along. He’d grown up the complete opposite life of her, going to rich private schools all his life and being a star swimmer made him pretty cocky in his attitude, she was relieved to be going to school although it was dampened when she found out he’d also be attending Cedar Creek. She’d simply tell herself that it was a big school and they’d most likely rarely come across one another. She’s been attending Cedar Creek for four years now and while she didn’t play much for the team in her first two years there she has the past two and is looking at maybe be the starting attacking midfielder. Living with her aunt, uncle and cousin has become less awkward but she’s even quieter than before as she still feels like a great outsider. However her cousin seems to be the only person she’s not afraid to let her feelings be known to.

QUOTE
There was a chill that was running through the grounds of Hogwarts School; the snow was deep and growing all the time while the trees were frosted making them look like they should be in some muggle display that seemed to show up everywhere around this time of year. However the cold might affect the outside of the school it didn’t do anything to inside as the fireplaces were constantly alive with roaring dancing flames that made most look upon the outside with delight and awe at it’s beauty as it wasn’t affecting them. Of course the only exception to this rule were the dungeons, the dank, musty and generally depressing lower levels of the castle always had a chill even in the scorching heat of the summer, the snow and winter simply added to it. Except for the Slytherin common room of course, the handsomely decorated room with green, silver and engraved snaked everywhere you looked was always a comfortable temperature but the fire that was around twenty four seven didn’t give it the cozy glow or feeling that it did for the rest of the castle. No the glow of the firelight simply added to its magnificent feeling, the feeling that whoever was in it was privileged, beautiful and all around better than anyone. Which was fitting since that’s how most Slytherins saw themselves.

Blair was one of those individuals, coming from an old and very rich Italian pureblood family that’s family tree went back quite far and contained a few well known wizards she knew that she was something special. The way she walked, or strutted some said, was with purpose yet graceful, her intentions and opinions were clear and everything she did, she did with confidence. In fact the girl oozed enough confidence that it was hard for others not to notice her, it was so disgustingly apparent that some even hated her for that. She’d heard the whispers behind her back when people thought that she wasn’t listening or couldn’t hear the shots at her beauty, intelligence and whatever else they could think to bitch about. However the truth was she knew that they were simply jealous and these remarks only made her smirk and her ego grow even more. The way she saw it was if you were important and well known enough to for people to be talking and bitching about you then you must be fabulous.

The chatter about Blair now however was being mixed with the excited buzz of the Yule Ball, which of course was quickly approaching. The girls giggling about their dresses and hair, who would take them and if they should simply go ask out a boy themselves. Of course more than half of them would chicken out and even if they did get up the courage to ask that boy they were currently fancying then it was more than likely they would get rejected. There weren’t that many good looking girls at Hogwarts in Blair’s opinion and the guys were of course just waiting, hoping and praying that if they asked the prettier girls that they would say yes. Of course if said boy wasn’t good looking himself than most would say and they would end up going with and ugly girl anyways. It’s how the world worked, the uglies with each other and the beautiful with each other.

At the moment Blair didn’t have a date, not because she hadn’t been asked because believe you me she had but none had been good enough. None was that one guy she wanted to go with, and who this guy was she didn’t even know herself but she would know him when she saw him. However he’d better show his face soon as she had better things to do than to wait for this guy to get his head out of his ass and ask her, it’s not as if Mr. Right hadn’t had ample opportunity. She always had Slytherin’s in her classes so it had to be one of them, after all she wouldn’t go with anyone from any other house. Ew. However it was Saturday so now he would simply have to find her which wouldn’t be hard as she was heading back to the common room now anyways. She’d just finished breakfast and was headed back to curl up on one of the smooth leather couches by the fire and read the stack of mail she’d received. Arriving at the entrance she said the password quickly and walked through into the mostly deserted common room, good she didn’t want any of the idiots who thought they could be her friend by hovering over her to disturb her.

Padding over she flopped down on the couch letting her legs stretch out as she perused the letters she’d received. There was one from her mother, one from her brother, another from her sister and a few from previous flings she’d had over the summer. Oh how they annoyed her, the desperate guys who after a weekend or two of messing around thought that they were destined to be soul mates or something. She never answered them of course but you’d think that after five or six months of sending letters with no reply they’d get it. Nope, they still held some shred of hope. It was that ‘love potion’ she fed them, at least that’s what her friends said when she told them about her fan club and then they’d all spend the next hour giggling and making fun of the idiots. Every time she found one of the letters she simply clucked her tongue with disgust before throwing them on the floor. She’d clean them up later…or the house elves would because that’s what they were for.
