Some Western countries, like the United States, have a law in their constitution that allows people to carry weaponry to be used for self-defense.

Obviously, that weaponry can and does end up being used for other things, and also in my view brings a lot of danger into civilian life, and therein lies the controversy.

Do you believe everyone has the right to bear arms, past legality? Would you want this right as legislation in your own country, or (if you're an American) do you like it for being a part of your country's laws?

I think there's a degree of this kind of empowerment a civilian population can have before it starts to hurt itself, and that that line should be drawn before small arms and anything more powerful.

The difference in gun deaths in the US and in places like Australia, where there are heavy restrictions on weaponry, is staggering. Just take a look at Bowling for Columbine and you'll see what I mean; great movie that, though Michael Moore has been known to bend the truth on occasion.

I really think it's fine to have weapons as long as you have a license. If you can't protect your own family from another it's kinda sad. If the military receives weapons, what's to stop them from coming to your door with them? I think it just makes people feel safer.

I watched Bowling for Columbine and it's a good movie. It's just the people at Columbine misused the weapons. Even some universities allow weapons in them now. I believe there was a shooting at one of them too. That still shouldn't stop everyone from having a choice though.

There are always those who will misuse a privilege and those who use it correctly. It all stems back to human nature. DON'T TOUCH THAT BUTTON. Half of the people you tell that to will touch the button lol!

We obviously do not have the right to bear arms, not one (legal) doctor will replace my arms with those of a bear.

As for real debate: no you should not be allowed to own guns! The more guns there are the more they are going to be used, but I cba to post again, I've discussed this before and find it frustrating: as with most debates people already know what they believe and for the most part will never change their mind.

I see both sides to this. I personally don't need a gun to protect myself or my family, but I'm sure this feeling of safety and trust depends on where you live.

Giving up arms means though, that you are fully dependent on your local and federal government for protection.

Which, depending on the circumstance, ain't a lot of use when they aren't allowed guns either.

To be honest, I'm kinda with cipher on this. Thing is, there's always gonna be someone out there who'll have a gun, legal or not.

Yes, that's true. But think about this: If we illegalize guns, criminals will import, and we will have absolutely no defense.

Well, I am. I admit, violence begets violence, those who live with the sword will perish with the sword, are actually very good philosophies, because they're damn true. Carrying a gun around is asking for trouble, but -not- carrying a gun around is defenseless. Who would you rob? The guy packing a Glock (or a Beretta, etc,) or the unarmed guy?

This is true. Is it, though, because of Australia's restrictions, or for different reasons? I can't say for sure. Maybe it's a bit of both. Maybe it's one or the other, but I can't be sure.

I agree, weapons will always cause violence, if we have this "right" we would be always promoting violence.

Banning things does not work, look at prohibition in the US, look at the banning drugs in any country. The same will be true for guns, except with higher stakes, crime will rise and oridinary people, the majority of the people who would have handled their guns in the proper manner will have little means to defend themselves. And yes i realize the danger present when you have guns everywhere, but to ban them is an overreaction caused by the fear mongering media. I believe there should be heavier restrictions on who can actually get guns to makesure the guns will get only into the hands of the majority that will use them properly
