I still say you should have taken Ghidra, or Duce. Or Riot, the Lightning Saix said as it trotted along, rainbow tail waving. The solitary Zoid had broken off of a search team on the coast, combing the island for anymore survivors. It had been a week since the events-Max Rubin could see the plume of smoke from the still erupting volcano well off in the distance.

He was on his own this time, the rest of the Rottigers not doing anything in particular. Having been gone so long from combat, he wanted to get a bit of practice in before anything major happened with the whole team. He figured this would be a nice little exercise.

"But I took you," Max said with a smile as the forest passed around them, "I don't expect to run across anything anyways. And if nothing else, you can outrun nearly anything now. Relax," he chuckled, "I'm not used to having all these Zoids to choose from. I wanted to stick with something familiar."

Ghidra wasn't happy. I swear, that lump was pouting when we left, Gordon picked his way over a mossy pile of rocks, stopping at the top since they could see the ruins of the dome from here. Even Max was quiet for a second.

"...maybe I should have brought one of them with us, at least. Oh well, too late now," he directed the Zoid down the pile of rocks and to the edge of the ruined city; the carcass of the once grand metropolis already gutted by looters. Luckily, the bodies had all been cleared away, though broken droids and dried splatters of blood still remained on the walls and ground.

Creepy, the Zoid mumbled, walking through a hole and looking around. Even though the city had been checked, never hurt to check again. Perhaps someone had come after everything calmed down.

"A little. Come on," the Saix trotted down a broad street, head high and looking left and right, careful not to brain himself on the end of his canons.

An old world lay in pieces. The smell of death and choking smoke, stale blood and bullet wounds infected the laden air when the Whale Kings shot off from the rugged city floor and went slowly away, crying in their low, melancholy voices...The stench had been there for awhile now. And it was very settled now, rotten and putrid as was the disaster of Toral City. Everything was broken. Severed. The human corpses were gone, but the machines were still there, contorted and stiff, painted with blood that was browned and dry, and cut marks that matched the scars in the buildings, the soil.

There were no words for the pain. A single Gojulas tread carefully, slowly, over scorched earth and shattered shrapnel with his jaws tightly clenched. His pilot was despondent too.

"You're sure you wanted to split the group?" asked Patriot, who stopped for a moment to observe the smoking volcano. The still quiet of Bek was something that filled him with a starving sort of emptiness.

"I'm sure," said Rob Herman, who was looking up at the Whale Kings which were nothing more but spots in the sky. "We have to cover as much ground as possible while we're here. Besides, if anything comes up, we can radio for backup. "

The Gojulas nodded and kept on going, making his way towards one of the wider roads of the fallen city. He doubted they were going to find any trouble either. But then again, there was a reason to be extra cautious despite the sleepy silence. Each small mountain of rubble, the dried blood pools and small dark passage made them both wary. They'd heard in passing that a couple of Republican Zoids from a previously dispatched party had gone missing--but that was more a rumor than anything else.

They listened for voices, for anything. A 'help me' or any distinguishable cry for aid, some evidence of survivors, even though they'd heard that most of the continent's population had fled awhile ago. It was haunting, unsettling indeed, to recall that Evrioz was once a thriving metropolis. Now, there was only wind and waste...

As they continued, something on the dashboard cropped up suddenly. An unidentified object was flashing a very heated red on one of the screens.

Rob leaned forward narrowed his dark eyes. "Hold on, Patriot. We're picking somethin' up on the radar."

Reality was so very quiet, like it was holding its breath at the sleek intruder. Even Max couldn't bring himself to speak like he normally would have, pointing things out and asking Gordon what he thought. Even before, when he was without a Zoid that could talk, he still would have been making notes to himself aloud. Their current location just seemed to demand peace.

And so, there was peace. For the moment. Gordon walked slowly down the street, looking into the destroyed buildings where he could and daintily stepping over the bloodstains. One in particular got his attention, and they stopped to look at it. It was clearly made by a Zoid stepping on someone, and while it was gruesome to look at... whatever Zoid it was had left an intent in the ground. It was three toed with sharp talons; some kind of tyrannosaur, but nothing Max recognized right away.

"Take a picture of that," Max whispered. Something about it tipped him off. He wanted to figure out what kind of Zoid it had belonged to. They might have something to do with all this, or it could be a clue at least. It almost seemed familiar to him.

Beep beep.

Gordon snapped his head up, doing that low Saix-specific rolling growl-noise as he looked around. Max's eyes went to the radar, one potentially hostile target. It was moving pretty slowly.

"That's odd," he whispered, "Wonder why they're here," he figured that another military person would be with a group... then again, he was by himself, right? But who else could be here... bandits and looters?

Curious, and feeling that it was his duty, he directed Gordon towards the other Zoid, zig-zagging through the streets. He pulled up the radio frequency as they went, clearing his throat. They were in neutral territory, and it was a Republican Zoid... with everything going on in the world lately, he had to be cautious.

The Saix came to a stop just out of sight of the big Zoid, and tilted his head as Max flicked the radio on, "This is Max Rubin with the Imperial Rottigers. State your name and purpose for being here," he said in his clear, loud voice. Gordon crouched down, thinking that whatever around the corner was more then likely bigger then him...
