(Just an f.y.i for those who don't know...the word disconcerted means to discompose. (Is that even a word?) To lose one's composure. To be put off. Surprised to the point where you lose your cool. Yeah. 'Nuff said. ^_~)

Night had fallen once again. Outside, the crickets chirruped in frenzied unison, quieting only at the sound of a passing traveler. An owl cooed softly overhead, his golden eyes ablaze and searching the dimly lit area for his next meal. Underfoot, small creatures wove in and out of the tall grass, hoping that they wouldn't become the meal that the owl was seeking. Everything was as it should be...except for one lone figure leaning against the aged trunk of an apple tree.

He listened intently to the evening life around him, eyes closed and mouth curled into the slightest of smiles. Everything held such marvelous sound...the whisper of the wind in the trees, or the sweet song of the nightingale. Even the bullfrogs in the nearby pond croaked in harmony with the nature surrounding them, their voices drifting over the uncivilized valley. He liked it here. This place had yet to be tainted by the trivialities that only people could bring. The unnecessary building of walls and the nearly painful clang of machinery were enough to drive him far from the cities and towns of which he thought...of which he had far too many memories...

A fluttering pain began anew in his heart, and he quickly pushed the pervading images away. He did not want to dwell on the past. The villagers had forgiven him those many years ago...even when he had been unable to. The suffering of so many, all because he had been young and reckless...it made his chest hurt. It made his whole body ache, the phantom feeling of being unable to breathe because blood was staining everything in red.

His vision swam momentarily, and he was forced to sit down. Leaning back against the cradling tree, the siren took a deep breath and let it out. His fingertips rested against the cool blades of grass sprouting up around him, calming him. He wasn't in that place anymore.

Brushing a stray tear from his eye, Elazul turned his face up to stare at the moon peeking from behind the clouds. The wind was singing...singing him a lullaby. If only he could sleep.
