Is infinity a number? Give your opinions and the foundations for such thoughts.

How do you define "number?"
Terms such as "real number," whole number," and "complex number" have exact definitions, but the term "number" is too vague, I think. There's no conventional definition. If you mean number as in the tangible counting of increments (signifiers of quantity, in reference to actual objects), then "infinity" is not a number (you cannot count to "infinity" objects, you cannot count more than all objects, and there are not enough objects in all to amount to infinity). If you mean number to be something that we can conceptually use in an equation (X+Y=Z), then yes, it is. When math becomes abstraction, then infinity has a place in its realm. When math is concrete (as it was first incorporated, then infinity is meaningless. -------------------- ![]() |
