Basics

Name: Arthur Severus Poe
Age: 45
Hometown: London
Blood status: Half-blood
Position at Hogwarts: Defense Against the Dark Arts professor; Head of Gryffindor

Personality:

5+ words that best describe your character: Intelligent, sarcastic, rational, cold, helpful
Brief Personality Description (150+ words):
Poe's personaliry is pretty much the same as his mentor, Arthur Alfred Hastings. He is extremely calm and rational, and will never start a quarrel. He will always try to avoid it by any means possible. He will also think through every decision he makes, made or will make, except those regarding his parents or mentor, which is defined as his weakness. He was not so ambitious as his mentor, but he cares for himself as much as he does and is ready to ignore that only when he his mentor, his parents are in question. He also never started a fight with Harry. Also like his mentor, he likes doing as much as he can by himself. Very intelligent, he started reading and sloving puzzles since he was 4 years old. He has read over a thousand books, with his favourite subjects being history and ''hard literature''. That is why he developed a love for Binns' subject and a good friendship with him. Also, he is very analiytical and can solve any problem he finds himsel in. As a teacher he is strict, but fair to all, giving everyone an equal opportunity. He has students he favours, but will never give them a better treatment at the expense of another student. He punishes disobedient and lazy students, mostly from his own House. He managed to get an office outside the Dungeons.

Some of his bad traits are his coldness, emotionless, lack of sympathy and sarcasm. He is very cold and rarely shows any of his emotions, except to his mentor, his parents. Sometimes he shows excitemend when a student does his job well, but that is very rare. That was taught to him by his mentor, but Poe surpassed him in that trait. He also has a lack of sympathy towards other people and their problems, again with the exeption of his mentor, his parents. That is mostly because of his coldness and his own House, which is always nagging about silly problems which he does not want to take care of. He is also very sarcastic, this time only with the exeption of his parents, but his mentor understands that and is never angry with him. He does not degrade or fail students, but he will always prove them wrong or show them the error of their ways through sarcasm or through ironising a normal situation. To people who get on his nerves, he is even sardonic.

Like his mentor, Poe never thinks of himself as someone weak. But, like all people, he has some weaknesses. His first and most dangerous one being school fancy. Since he loves her from the 4th year he has, because she is married to another, developed a protective friendship with her and is always there to protect her even if he could risk his own life for such irrational behaviour. Also, like his mentor, he lacks knowledge in Herbology. Although he managed to pass the subject with and O both on O.W.L.-s and N.E.W.T.-s, he lacks the practical knowledge. He has greater knowledge than his mentor because he is a Potions Master, although he teaches DADA, and knows every plant that is used in his domain, but the rest... he cannot differ a rose from a lilly :-) But regarding poisons, potions and antidoes, he knows more that the Herbology professor. Another big weakness are his emotions. While he is calm and rational at the same moment, he is ready to do anything for his parents which can only bring him problems. Such emotions hinder him in many of his decision his mentor or anyone else would do without hesitation.

His biggest strenght, as he always said, is his mentor. Hastings taught Poe as if he were his son, for which Poe's parents are still grateful. He is an excellent duelist, skilled at both wandeless and nonverbal magic, although he is still practicing more complicated spells nonverbally with his mentor. He is also very intelligent and analytical which helps him to find a solution to any puzzle or situation. This part of his character is like his mentor's and his mother's. He is also a brilliant Potions Master, peer of the late Severus Snape and Horace Slughorn, and is able to make the most complicated potions without a mistake, ex. Felix Felicis or the Polyjuice potion. He even beats his master in knowledge about potions. He also knows every spell, even the most complicated ones, and can cast everyone of them without a problem, even the Unforgivable ones.

Poe firstly and foremostly likes his parents. They are the ones who rased him and taught him to be as he is. In the same category fit his mentor, who lead him through his education, and his fancy. He also likes Dueling as much as his mentor. A trait he got from him. He was also the duel champion of his generation for 6 years in a row, since he could not participate as the 1st year. He likes Quidditch, as he was a former seeker, and Chess, normal and wizard, and plays it with his father and mentor very often. He also fancies his subject, Potions, at which he is as good as Snape, Moody or Lupin. In this category also go Transfiguration, Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts and History of Magic. He is also very good with prof. Binns and, like his mentor, the only one he knew by name. His school life is much the same as his mentor's, disregarding love, because he picked advices from him.

As his mentor, he dislikes such branches as Divination because he also finds them to trivial and to Science-Fiction even for the Magical World. He is a very strict professor, but does not ask much knowledge as he could or as Snape did. He only asks his students to work hard and if they fail, they have a second chance. Therefore he dislikes the students who think they can pass without any work without even trying. He gives them detention very often and takes points from their Houses, something his mentor rarely does. But, nevertheless he is liked by students because his an open professor, he teaches well and much, but is always fair. He dislikes the majority of Slytherins because of their pureblood supremacy and their arrogance.

Physical Appearance

General appearance (100+ words):
Poe is 189 cm tall and weights 70kg. He has short brown hair and a beard. His eyes are blue. Although he is 45 he looks a little older, but not much. He always wears a suit, never a robe. His suits are classic mostly, black with a blue shirt and black shoes. He never wears a tie and he never buttons his suit so his shirt can be seen. When he does wear another color it is white (the suit) and brown shoes. The shirt is always blue.

He is very slim and does not care much about his body mass. Although he did Quiddtich he is not very sportly. He is known to play tennis from time to time, but not much. He usually plays chess with his mentor Hastings.

Regarding some traits that distinguish him, Poe has only one scar on his right thigh which he got from a werewolf. Right after he had finished school he went with Hastings on training but they met a werewolf on the way. The werewolf charged Poe and slashed him on the right leg. Hastings then used the Immobulus spell to petrify it and then return the werewolf to its village where he lived as a human.

History

Schooling: Hogwarts, Gryffindor

Arthur was born on September 3, 1981 in Westminster to Gregory Poe, a muggle professor of History and Latin, and Sandra Poe, a former Hufflepuff and a witch, now a member of the order. Since he is Half-blooded, he did not find out he is a wizard until he turned 11. From an early age, his parents encouraged his intellect by giving him puzzles to solve and by teaching him how to play chess. But, they never forced him into anything he was reluctant to do. He was able to talk and read at the age of 3. At the age of 5 he decided, after a talk with his parents, that he would never drink or smoke, which he has not done until now. When he was only 4, a big dog got free from his leash and attacked Arthur. Although it hurt him, he recovered completely, but had to be taken to the ICU for treatment. He also grew fond of art, which his mother showed him, at a very young age.

The first book he read was Doyle's ''A Study in Scarlet''. After reading the book mentioned above, he wanted to find his Watson, a true and loyal friend that would always be by his side. He is still doing and evaluating in Hogwarts. Since then he has read every Doyle and Agatha Christie work, along with other classics such as Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Goethe, Sartre, Camus, Beckett, Dante, etc. Reading crime fiction he enhenced his logic, deduction and induction and is now able to solve almost every type of puzzle.

At the age of 8 he got interested in music history. His father, a History teacher, who planted his love for general history, helped him in his research. After he concluded he knew as much as an individual can know, he decided to learn how to play the great works he had been reading about. He persuaded his father and mother to pay him for piano lessons. They are a wealthy family so they agreed and Arthur started playing the piano. In just 3 years he has made impressive progress, being able to play works of Mozart and Beethoven. Five years after that, he was able to play the complex suites of Bach, Handel and Rachmaninoff. At 13 he began learning the violin. He mastered the instrument at the age of 19. Ironically or not, he did not know his mentor also played those two instruments until he finished school. While they were in a Muggle house in Paris, Poe sat to play the piano and then his mentor told him about his musical knowledge.

Since he was a child, he noticed his mother doing strange things. Examples include moving things without touching them, cleaning the whole house in a few seconds, creating fire without matches or a lighter, etc. His mother was a very cheerful and gentle person, who cared about him, something Arthur inherited, but he keeps it for himself, showing those traits only to peope that deserve it.

He asked his mother about it and she would always reply that he will find out later. When Arthur turned 11, his mother showed him an invitation from Hogwarts and explained him everything about magic. Arthur was excited he would learn to be like his mother in the terms of magic. Upon arriving at Hogwarts, he decided to learn hard and always had outstaing grades, but he only liked subject such as Potions, DADA, History of Magic, Charms and Transfiguration. He took the O.W.L. exams to become an Auror including the History of Magic O.W.L. He got an O in every ont of them, even Herbology, a subject he dislikes but learned because he had to. Since he learned as much as he can for his age regarding the other subjects he dedicated the majority of his time to Herbology. His knowledge is improved, and he managed to repeat his O.W.L. succes at his N.E.W.T exams. He later decided not to be an Auror and returned to Hogwarts to teach DADA.

Post-Hogwarts Life:

At his 5th year, his mentor introduced him to the Order of the Phoenix. Poe had already known about the First War and he wanted to participate. At the age of 15, he was one of the youngest members. He did not do much fighting, but he participated in some major battles wounding several Death Eaters. When he finished his N.E.W.T.-s, he went on a learning journey with Hasting. They traveled all over Europe. During the trip, where he mastered wandlels and nonverbal magic, he decide not to be an Auror and instead returned to Hogwarts to teach Potions. He always has at least one bottle of Felix Felicis with him, but he rarely uses it. He has also never used it to get a better position with his fancy, out of the respect and love for her. He also joined the new, 2nd Order and is ready to help with in the Second War as much as he can.

He was extremely saddened by the deaths of Dumbledore, Snape, Slughorn and Flitwick is currently helping the Order protect Harry.

RP of Lesson (400+ Words):

Poe grabbed his cane, that was actually his wand camouflaged as a cane he did not even need. He greeted his colleagues from the Lounge and went to his classroom. The day was sunny and bright and, although he did not seem like such a person, he liked those days. Although he preferred cold weather, he never liked clouds or rain and would always be in a better mood if the weather was adequate. Since the Lounge was on the Ground Floor he had to walk the stairs to his office. But, since he, as a professor, knew all the portrait passwords, he decided to use a shortcut. He approached the portrait of Adalbert Waffling, a famous theoretician and the author of the Fundamental Laws of Magic. ’’Good day Adalbert’’, he greeted him. Adalbert bowed in his portrait. ’’Ah, greetings professor Poe, always a pleasure to see you. If you’d please…’’, he asked him. ’’The Spirit of the Law’’, exclaimed Poe. Adalbert bowed again and the portrait opened. In a few seconds he was on the Third Floor, just a minute from his classroom. As soon as he got in and sat on his desk, the children started coming in.
He stood up, greeted them and took his wand out. ’’N.E.W.T. classes, lesson number 29, I presume. Meaning Dueling Practice. Yay, what fun!’’, he said, with strong irony in the last sentence. He gave them a sign to stand up. With a flick of his wand, the desks transferred themselves to the opposite ends of the classroom, climbing on top of each other. Poe was a master at non-verbal and even wandless magic, but this spell needed the wand. He then looked at the students who were a little confused. ’’Oh, I presume you wanted to duel on the desks, well it is still possible, you know’’, he said ironically. He called one of the students. ’’Just to remind the others how you fly during duels’’, he said while calling the student. He gave a sign to start and called one of the students to be the referee. They bowed and went to their different ends. As soon as the referee gave the sign the student fired a spell. ’’Expelliarmus’’, he said. Poe, a bit surprised, blocked the spell easily with a small flick of his wand. ’’Bold… very bold! Impedimenta’’, he said. The spell hit the student and he fell down. The duel was over.
Poe approached him and gave him a hand to help him up. As soon as the student got up, Poe clapped his hands. ’’20 points to Gryffindor for showing great boldness. The other would have probably chickened out and fired a jinx at themselves before I manage to attack’’, he said sarcastically. Some of the students laughed. ’’Now, this was an example of how to duel when you do not have a chance – give it all you got. All of us knew that this guy here had no chance, but he still tried. That is what I have taught you – always fight to the end, never give up. You might not always get what you want in life, but that does not mean that you should not try. Now, since you have seen the basic defense and attack, I would like you to practice a little and prepare yourselves for next class’ exam about dueling, a practical exam in which you shall demonstrate more advance attack and defense and some non-verbal magic. Your grade will depend upon it. I hope you have fun today, because next time you surely won’t’’, he said adding a diabolical smile at the end.
He returned to his desk and watched the students duel.
