Ministry Announcements Found in every common room, as well as in the Great Hall, is a large, stone panel; the words “Ministry Announcements” imprinted darkly above it. This is separate to the regular notice boards, and is where the Ministry directly addresses Hogwarts’ inhabitants, reminding incessantly of new laws and expressing their high strung emotions on events occurring in the school. Defacement of this board, as well as the smaller one beside it, would be a risky feat as they are considered the sole property of the Ministry and severe consequences are guaranteed.

Dungeons and Below The dungeons are the most disliked part of the castle. With most of this floor built under the lake, and the rest under the earth, the corridors are fairly dark, damp and chilly—the wind that often blows throughout (not strong, but coming from seemingly nowhere) is always biting.

Ground Floor The ground floor is mainly made of wide, open rooms like the entrance and great halls. The air can still be quite breezy up here, and is usually warm in the summer and cool in winter. The Hufflepuff common room and history of magic classroom are down in one direction, near the corridor that leads down to the kitchen and the prefect and professor lounges are off in another. The large doors to the great hall can be found at the end of the entrance hall.

First Floor The first floor consist of just one corridor, which leads from one set of staircases to another—though of course this is always changing as the stairs move, there generally is two set of staircases leading from the corridor; one up, and one down. Along the corridor there are a few classrooms, though only one is unlocked for lessons (most of those that are locked were probably done by Flitwick when he was around, everyone knows that man loved his 'alohamora' charm), and an office which is currently used by the muggle studies professor.

Second Floor The second floor is thankfully more away from the cold air of the lower floors, and therefore less prone to sudden wind bursts. Many windows with large sills dominate the outer walls of the floor, and are often used by students to sit on and peer out over the grounds. On the south-east side of the castle, there is a wonderful view of the lake (though there is a better, east-directed, view from higher up); and on the west, a brilliant, unbeatable view of the Quidditch Pitch.

Third Floor The third floor is quite well organised, as it has both the DADA classrooms and the Hospital Wing upon it—meaning that travelling from DADA lessons (which, obviously, are the most dangerous) to the Hospital Wing doesn’t take very long. This floor is, like many of the floors below and those above, also resident to a statue—the humpback witch—that leads to Hogsmeade (though few know this) and many of those seat-worthy windowsills. Unfortunately, the only window with a spectacular view is that of the one in Hospital Wing.

Fourth Floor This floor has a typically magical room, the Room of Requirement, as known by the few who have had the pleasure of stumbling across it. Unlike the other floors, there are no noticeable statues, though a few wonderful portraits and an expertly placed window—which looks out east, over the forest, Hagrid’s hut and the lake—make up for this easily.

Fifth Floor The most remarkable thing about this floor could possibly be the statues; there is a brilliant piece of artwork of Boris the Bewildered, which marks the separate ways to Gryffindor Tower and the fourth floor, and a statue of Gregory the Smarmy over in the east wing. Unfortunately, neither is given much attention by students, who usually ignore them, having little interest of old artefacts and statues; instead they would consider the best thing on this floor the giant swamp left by the Weasley twins.

Sixth Floor This floor is probably the barest of them all, having only one classroom upon it, and old, closed off bathrooms which are no longer used. A few classrooms litter the small amount of space there is, but these are all locked and therefore little fun to anyone. Unless you have charms, you’re most likely to be passing straight up to or down from the towers. There are a few good portraits around, though, and a good view from a east window, but unfortunately it’s not a seat-sized window and therefore isn’t visited much.

Seventh Floor The seventh floor is host to the Examination Hall, and a number of unused classrooms. Currently it is serving a more rewarding (or perhaps not, depending who you ask) purpose, though, as the Ministry Officials are holding their interviews of Hogwarts students’ and staff here. As they attempt to find out who was behind both the winter ball and the vandalising of the armour gallery, a number of aurors and less important officials patrol the corridors of this floor, on the lookout for suspicious students.

The Towers Up here, are different towers, which are led to from the Sixth Floor; none of the towers are connected, though the Astronomy Tower is used for both lessons and personal use by students—personal using meaning homework. The Owlery is located in the West Tower, the North Tower consists of nothing more than an old Divination classroom and then the Ravenclaw Tower is located to the west. Gryffindor Tower is also up here, but the entrance is down on the seventh floor.

Care of Magical Creatures Experience the quirks and mishaps of studying magical creatures. Whether residing in the forest, or wrecking havoc on the lawn, wits are not the only thing to hold onto whilst encountering such beasts. Several feet away lies a magnificently grown garden, tended to by the dedicated professor. Though the same cannot be said for the hut beside it, gathering dust as time goes by. Green House Several greenhouses occupy this area where students may take Herbology. A few tendrils of varying shades of green creep gently along the glass walls, partially hiding this area. It has become slightly overgrown over the past few years due to the lack of people available to tend to it. Forum Led by: Professor Hayes |

Quidditch Pitch The quidditch pitch is unusually deserted these days, with quidditch having been banned in the latest ministry decree. Only rebelling students use this area now, along with the first years being taught to fly.

The Lawn Here on the lush, green, grass that sparkles with the morning dew you can find students clustered in groups, talking and picnicing as they please when spring comes around. In the winter months, students stroll in the snow or ice-skate on the frozen lake, always a little wary of the giant squid, who hovers under the surface.

Graveyard Here among the mist and shadows you may just stumble across what you have been looking for. The graveyard holds many arcane secrets... not to mention forgotten tombs. Although the entire area can found rather alarming to the naïve first year, it presents an intriguing mystique to older students.

Forbidden Forest You don't know what you might find here. Werewolves, centaurs, unicorns... all live somewhat peacefully, apart from the students. This shadowy forest is rarely visited by those that attend the nearby school, although students enjoy frequent rumours about the growing population of magical beasts (wholly without foundation). This is another reason to not get a detention -- students are known to be forced to "cruel deaths" at the hand of the grumbling caretaker.

The Courtyard This area of Hogwarts is the favourite place of many of the castles residents, and it’s nobody’s guess why. Leading out from the ‘back’ of the castle are a series of ancient, decrepit old archways, which follow on to a great, lush lawn. Littered around the lawn is a series of stepping-stones, beautifully pattered in the soil. These lead both to the centre of the large grassy area, and to another wide, artistic archway at the other side of the courtyard, which takes you out into the more typical Hogwarts Lawns. Surrounding the whole courtyard are thick bushes, helping enclose the area and set the peaceful atmosphere.

Hogsmeade Where the final battle is destined to erupt, this quaint little village is close to the security of Hogwarts. From the warmth of the Three Broomsticks to the thrill of the Shrieking Shack, Hogsmeade remains as the only entirely wizarding village in Britain. It is here students above third year once looked forward to visiting throughout the year; however the war has, once again, encouraged a ban of such a treat. Please note that no students from Hogwarts can visit Hogsmeade under any circumstances...legally, at least.

Diagon Alley Diagon Alley is a long cobbled street that is hidden behind a large archway leading from the Leaky Cauldron pub in London. On a normal day it is full of exciting and strange things, including the people, the shops and the restaurants. Brightly coloured umbrellas hover above empty tables, and shop advertisements dance their way along shop windows, occasionally following beside shoppers as they walk past.

Knockturn Alley Knockturn Alley passes Gringotts bank, where it connects to Diagon Alley, but from here onwards the shops are of a different nature entirely. It is a dingy alleyway, with shops squashed onto both sides, each window display showing dark items; this area is devoted to the dark arts. Old witches and hags roam the alley, trying to sell horrifying products to passers by.

Ministry of Magic The headquarters of the Ministry of Magic is located in the heart of London, the actual structure built underground. Magical windows are located throughout the eleven-levelled structure, showing a fake image of London updated every minute by the Magical Maintenance Team. Level one is where the Minister of Magic and his most esteemed employers are kept, and levels two to ten are below this; visitors arrive in the Atrium, on level eight.

St Mungo's St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is reached via Purge and Dowse, Ltd. in Muggle London. Purge and Dowse, Ltd. is an red-brick, old-fashioned department store that has "Closed for Refurbishment" signs hanging on its doors. One speaks to the ugly dummy in the front window, who will nod its assent and beckon you to enter.
