The battle system, to give it some credit, is repetitive (you can kill pretty much all your basic enemies with one attack by using a Triple Tech or Luminaire) and way too easy (you get a ridiculous amount of healing items and money). The dungeons are repetitive and lacking in any sort of puzzles or content. The characters aren't nearly as fleshed out as fans would lead you to believe. In all, pretty crappy gameplay.
But..there's just something about the game artistic-wise. The incredible story, the way its split into a kind of prologue that sets up background story while still keeping things interesting. And then all of a sudden the real plot comes out in full force, throwing you into a nonstop whirlwind of events that climaxes with an unbelievable plot twist and boss battle. I'd say this game was much better suited to be a book, but then that'd mean missing out on the music this game has to offer. How one development team made such moving and awesome music while staying within the SNES limits is beyond my comprehension.
The ending (the main one at least) is also the best and most satisfying in any video game. So in all, it really depends on if you appreciate all that stuff when it comes down to whether its a good game or not. Of course, that's coming from someone who played it for the first time last year. I'm sure the main fanbase is coming largely from nostalgia of playing it earlier in life, honestly I can't see myself playing this game unless I forget all aspects of the story (hoping for oldtimers disease someday)
In summary, awesome game, everyone should at least play through it to see if they like it. I honestly don't see how you COULDN'T reach the end while playing through such a compelling game.
Crap, I'm turning into DL.
What the fuck, Doga? Lacking in plot? How far did you get? Actually the plot is good even from the beginning basically, so something must be wrong with your brain or something ?

When you beat Magnus Magus and go back to 600 A.D., things get juicy in terms of plot.
But I think I agree with all of you that it's a great RPG, but perhaps not the best.

For what it lacks in plot and character development, it makes up for in overall fun and enjoyability. It definitely doesn't deserve the "Best RPG Game Ever Award", though. |
That. Though I've beaten it.

Probably depends on when someone played it. I'm fairly sure I have a lower opinion of it than someone who played it on the SNES when it was new. I didn't play it until the DS port.

Same here, haven't even owned the game for a year, but it's my fourth favourite game in existence.

Dude, that's harsh.
Also, if it matters, CT is probably in my top 15 or something. I don't tend to rank games. Especially since my opinions vary SO much. If I'm playing a game nonstop, it's my "Number 1 Favorite", until I drop it to play another one I remembered I had. FFX still holds high in my list, though.

I finished the game+sidequests. I felt it was only decent because the characters tended to lack much development. I found most of their traits fairly stock, or they had a nonexistent personality. I don't recall any defining moments for most of the characters, sans the sidequests, but even then, it didn't really feel 'defining.' Chrono is personality-less. Marle is the typical rebellious princess, with no other traits attached. Lucca is the typical kid genius, and I have no recollection of any interesting moments for her. I'd expect to be able to see how the crippling of her mother made her develop. Frog was good. I enjoyed how he actually got over issues and the like. Ayla was hella bland. Robo just talked like a typical robot, kudos on the inquiries about how worth it his life actually is, though I thought they messed up the whole 'what measure is a non human?' argument that it seemed they wanted to portray. Magus was pretty cool. It was interesting seeing him as a kid and how schala affected him.
The plot was only decent, and that feels like a stretch.
However, it may be because I've had the opportunity to play games like FFXII, X, T, DQ8, TWEWY and the like.
