August 2015: The Earth's population reached 7 billion, causing a multitude of problems for its inhabitants. The overcrowding resulted in a shortage of food, natural resources, employment and housing, which inevitably caused violence and crime to escalate the world over. American jails and prisons became overfilled, causing lesser felons to be released back out into the streets. Many of them were returned right back to the penitentiary system for the same, or worse, crimes.
November 2015: To combat the rise in criminals, the American government began covertly testing Directive 17 Omega - D17O, aka Project RUTH (Reduction Under Trusted Hands), on three penitentiaries around the United States. D17O was a lethal chemical that produced extreme symptoms of the flu and led to inevitable expiration. The inmates selected to receive the injection were those that were thought to be unable to be rehabilitated.. people who proved to be extreme dangers to society. D17O, while toxic, was not an airborne contagion, thus extraordinary security precautions from those handling the procedures were thought to be unneeded; rubber gloves and thorough hand washing sufficed..and it cut down on cost. For five weeks these injections went on behind closed doors.
December 2015: The Directive was officially halted when one of the inmates escaped and attacked three guards shortly after receiving the D17O injection. All three guards were quarantined. However, anyone with broken skin who came in direct contact with the contaminated blood became infected. By then it was too late to stop the spread outside of the prison's walls.
January 2016: The sickness hit. The American government did what they could to try to cover it up, as very few knew where it actually originated..and those who did know didn't talk. However, their efforts were overlooked as most citizens didn't take the time to focus on that aspect of it. The more pressing matter was finding something to prevent it from spreading.
February 2016: Vaccinations for the sickness were said to be "impossible" because of the ever changing virus. In the four weeks it ran rampant it repeatedly mutated, growing stronger. What originally took two days of incubation soon become two hours. What caused millions to perish in four weeks killed millions more by the day as that fifth week rolled around. It didn't take long for the sickness to spread worldwide, thanks to air travel.
March 2016: The ninth week in, after 30% of the American population was lost, the vaccination to prevent the spread of the sickness, that very vaccination that was said to be "impossible", was introduced to the public. These vaccinations were mandatory and free of charge. It was mere blasphemy to even balk at the thought of getting vaccinated. Everyone who was anyone lined up at their local pharmacies and clinics for their shot. In reality, everyone injected were divided into two groups, unbeknown to anyone but a select number. Most of the population was injected with D17O, that same lethal compound that actually introduced the sickness to those who received the shot, some 98% of remaining Americans. D17Z was injected into the rest. This small percentage was provided with immunity from the sickness.
March 24, 2016: The United States borders were closed. No one could travel into or out of the country. Both air and sea travel were halted.
April 2016: The gory details of the sickness aren't necessary. Let's just say that in a little under three weeks everyone "vaccinated" with D17O perished. Those that were spared? The "survivors"? They didn't leave the sites where they'd been vaccinated. Instead, they woke up some 24 hours later in military bases across the United States, eventually routed to a fallout shelter just outside of one of five major cities.
May 2016: The United States military was ordered to bomb all major cities to purge the sickness and sanitize the wreckage left behind in the wake.
July 2016: In three months time things on the surface became even more catastrophic. There were survivors of the extermination..though for some that term is used rather loosely. Some citizens never followed through with obtaining their mandatory injection..and those people were left to survive in a world that left much to be desired. For these people shelter and resources had to be scouted and secured. They had to fight with others in their same situation; persevere, learn combat, wage war. They took over towns, cities, resources..they became knowledgeable about what cities held what supplies. Some of them set up bases, and shot anyone that stepped foot near their territory. It became a war zone, quite literally. However, it was discovered that second week in that they were not alone. Whatever chemicals were in the syringes counteracted with something inside some of those injected with D17O and it caused dead tissue to be reanimated. Yes, some of the dead came back to life..and those living on the surface were faced with having to contend with them.
April 17, 2017: The doors on the Las Vegas bunker, set on a timer, open, releasing those inside onto the surface. They are completely oblivious to what has been going on above them for the last twelve months; meaning they have no idea there are survivors of the catastrophe; alive or undead. Neither do they know the truth behind what happened, though it's safe to assume there have been serious discussions and theories spread among them. Their orders are direct; surface, rebuild, maintain.
June 2017: Instructions to rebuild and maintain have been deemed failures. Rather than work under these orders, a large number of people originally stationed in the bunkers fled elsewhere, causing hopes of a new society in Las Vegas to crumble. The ones in charge of the bunker felt they couldn't simply let the world die off; something needed to be done in order to restore some sort of normalcy. And it had to be done fast, but at the same time cautiously; there were still the Infected roaming the world, ones with which the living still had to contend.
August 2017: Three main settlements have emerged throughout the state of Nevada. Located in Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko, these camps have each become successful in their own ways. None are very supportive of the others' methods, but so far they have managed to survive this long without much dispute. However, tension is thick, and by nature people are greedy for power. Only time will tell if Nevada can remain peaceful.
