AMC announced today that it has ordered a fourth season of Breaking Bad starring two-time Emmy-winning Bryan Cranston. The series from Vince Gilligan (The X-Files) aired its season three finale on Sunday. The show’s ratings were up 18% in viewers for the season versus last year and 30% among adults 18-34.
The drama is filmed on location in Albuquerque, NM. “AMC’s Breaking Bad is one of the most layered and intense dramas on television today,” said Joel Stillerman, Senior Vice President of original programming, production and digital content, in a statement. “The critical acclaim and strong audience growth we’ve seen in season three reinforce that this is the kind of exceptional original storytelling AMC has become known for providing to audiences. Vince Gilligan and his team deliver bold storylines that truly push the psychic envelope and create a mesmerizing, exhilarating television experience. We look forward to an incredible fourth season.” (ew) |

Lifetime orders three police procedural pilots Projects join potential ’Army Wives’ spinoff on network’s slate Lifetime is diving heavily into the crime drama genre, ordering three police procedural pilots from notable showrunners. The network has picked up shows from Josh Berman ("CSI," "Bones"), Annie Brunner ("Huff") and Jeffrey Bell ("V"). "With a strong foundation in scripted programming firmly established by ’Army Wives’ and ’Drop Dead Diva,’ Lifetime is aggressively expanding its drama series development plate with powerful programs from creative auspices who have strong pedigrees in producing stand-out programming," Lifetime Networks general manager and president Nancy Dubuc said. "These pilots developed by (executive vp entertainment) JoAnn (Alfano) and her team are the first steps we will take in bringing Lifetime’s scripted strategy to the forefront." "Against the Wall," from Brunner, is about a policewoman who causes a riff with her cop brothers when she joins Internal Affairs. "Exit 19" is about a single mother raising kids while working as a New York City homicide detective. The project is from ABC Studios and CBS TV Studios, Bell and executive producers Nina Wass ("Sherri," "Less Than Perfect") and Gene Stein. Finally, an untitled project from Berman and Sony Pictures TV is about two female police detectives in San Diego who investigate high-profile crimes while navigating their personal lives. Berman is also the creator of Lifetime’s dramedy "Drop Dead Diva." The trio will contend for a spot on Lifetime’s schedule next year, along with the "embedded pilot" that will air during this season of "Army Wives" that lays the ground for a potential spinoff. The "Wives" spinoff is also a police procedural. |

“Persons Unknown,” the “Prisoner”-ish new NBC series from the writer of “The Usual Suspects,” will air its last Monday episode on July 5, then migrate to Saturdays starting July 17.
This is a very bad sign for the series’ long-term prospects. The show’s fortunes were not enhanced this week when NBC shifted it at the last minute from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. -- so quickly that at least some DVR program guides could not keep up with the shift. The series debuted with a lousy 1.4 and has been losing ground ever since (aintitcool) |

Steve Carell is leaving NBC. Is Alec Baldwin next?
NBC and The Office fans everywhere fielded a blow last week when Steve Carell confirmed he’ll be leaving the comedy after the completion of season 7 in May 2011. This week, it seems another leading man from the network might be following in Carell’s footsteps: 30 Rock‘s Alec Baldwin. “As much as I like acting,” a seemingly sad and sincere Baldwin told CNN‘s Alina Cho earlier this week (see clip embedded after the jump), “I know that I would love to have a different life. A private life. I think that doing this now for a living has become really, really hard. I would rather go do other things, and [with] whatever amount of time I have left in my life, have a normal life.” Of course, Baldwin leaving the comedy after his contract expires in 2012 isn’t exactly news — last summer in a Playboy interview, when asked how long he’d stay with 30 Rock he responded, “I’ve got three more years to go.” Yet, is it wrong that we’re still holding out hope, considering the fact that Baldwin insisted he wanted to leave the show all the way back in 2008 — and clearly didn’t? (Sure, it was probably because he couldn’t get out of his contract, but still.) What do you think Baldwin will do after next season? Will you still watch the show if he leaves? And can you imagine a Thursday night without Carell and Baldwin? (ew) |

After five weeks of negotiations between CBS and 20th Century Fox TV over a midseason order for CIA drama pilot Chaos, the project, once considered a shoo-in for a spot on the schedule, now appears dead after the options on the actors expired.

Pushing Daisies‘ Lee Pace and ex-Law & Order ADA Linus Roache have joined HBO’s drama pilot Miraculous Year. Stark Sands (Generation Kill) has also been cast in a supporting role. Exec-produced by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow (who is also directing the pilot), Year is described as an examination of a New York family as seen through the eyes of a charismatic, self-destructive Broadway composer (played by Tony winner Eddie Redmayne). Hope Davis, Frank Langella, and Patti LuPone round out the cast.
