Fox announces prime-time schedule for fall

Fox will add three new dramas and four new comedies to the schedule next season that is “designed to be aggressive, not just to maintain.” Talking with reporters today in anticipation of the network’s presentation to advertisers in New York, Entertainment President Kevin Reilly touted the network’s new “modern-day Dallas” in Lonestar that stars Jon Voight (24) and talked about the coup in scoring Keri Russell (Felicity) for the comedy Running Wilde that also stars Will Arnett. He also announced that Fox will air a special episode of Glee when the network airs the Super Bowl next year.

As usual, the conversation veered toward American Idol and its future without judge Simon Cowell. ”Auditions don’t begin until September, so we do have time,” explains Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice. ”There is no bigger question for the summer.”

By far, the network’s most ambitious project for next season is Terra Nova, a high-concept drama from the auspices of Steven Spielberg, ex-Fox Chairman Peter Chernin, agent-turned-producer Aaron Kaplan and scribe Brannon Braga (24). The prehistoric, time-traveling drama is in pre-production and has yet to be cast but Reilly says they’ve already hired the production designer from Avatar to work on the special effects (the show will feature dinosaurs). Because of the size of the production — it is expected to shoot in Hawaii — the show has yet to earn a time slot on the midseason schedule.

Finally, Fox did not say what it plans to do on Saturdays now that it has canceled The Wanda Sykes Show.

CBS has ordered four new series, including its reboot of Hawaii 5-0 starring Alex O’Loughlin, the Jim Belushi legal drama Defenders, the Tom Selleck police drama Blue Bloods, and the plus-sized comedy Mike and Molly.

Noticeably missing from the Eye’s first wave of pickups: The Criminal Minds spinoff. But CBS’ upfront is still two days away, so there’s still time.

The CW jumped on the spy bandwagon for the fall and has green-lighted Nikita as a series, starring uber-hot martial-arts expert Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard) in a reboot/follow-up to USA's beloved spy-fi show La Femme Nikita.

McG (Terminator: Salvation) will executive-produce the remake, along with Peter Johnson from Warner Brothers TV and Wonderland Productions.

The USA show, as fans know, was based on Luc Besson's awesome 1990 French spy thriller Nikita, but the show had its own mythology and cast, headed by the beautiful blond kick-ass Aussie Peta Wilson and her broody, mulletted French-Canadian co-star Roy Dupuis.

In the new show, Nikita goes rogue, and a new assassin is trained to replace her. Will Wilson make an appearance? Oh, God, please ...

The CW previously announced early renewals for The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Smallville. The network will announce its full lineup on Thursday.

Forget vampires, it's the time of the werewolf ... at least for MTV. The cable network has picked up the new series Teen Wolf, based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox film, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed. And since it's MTV, getting hairy isn't all that happens—since it's MTV, he also gets the ability to attract girls.

The new series stars Tyler Posey (Lincoln Heights) as a "a dorky high-school student who gets a rush of new powers, including the ability to attract girls, after a wolf attack." The series is executive produced by Jeff Davis, Marty Adelstein and Rene Echevarria. Of course, it's MTV so he "gets the ability to attract girls"

Vampires are hot these days, but werewolves are about to come into their own. This summer's season of True Blood features a major storyline about werewolves and shapeshifters, ABC's summer series The Gates takes us into a gated community with werewolves (and other supernatural criters), and, well, let's just say there may be one more significant werewolf surprise coming up in our future on a popular series.

The guy who gave us our first looks at Fox's Fringe and NBC's Journeyman is now set to take us back to the prehistoric past in Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova, according to Entertainment Weekly.

That's Alex Graves we're talking about, who was just hired to direct the series' highly anticipated debut episode. Graves, who was also responsible for the pilot episode of The Nine and was executive producer of The West Wing, will help fling a family from 100 years in the future back to the prehistoric era.

The series has already received a 13-episode commitment from Fox, and filming will likely begin in Australia at the end of the summer.

Entertainment Weekly, which has gotten its hands on a script for Terra Nova, describes what they've seen as follows:

The scene: a large group of settlers are preparing to leave the apocalyptic world they live in to time travel back millions of years via a massive, high-tech contraption. Their goal is to see trees, enjoy a blue sky, eat real food—basically, to start over in this so-called Eden. But what they find is unlike anything they were expecting.

Steven Spielberg may go to another planet to find the star for his eagerly awaited Terra Nova TV series. Jason O'Mara, last seen in the short-lived (and quite controversial) U.S. version of Life on Mars, is in talks to star in Fox's midseason series, Deadline reported.

O'Mara, who appeared in Mars as a New York City homicide detective who suddenly finds himself inexplicably transported from 2008 to 1973, would be the first actor cast in Terra Nova. Offers have reportedly been made to two other actors for various roles on the project, but neither of them has gotten to the negotiation stage.

Terra Nova would also send O'Mara traveling through time, as the series focuses on an ordinary family from 2149, when the planet is dying, who are transported back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth, where they join a colony of humans with a second chance to build a civilization. O'Mara would play Jim Shannon, a devoted father with a checkered past who guides his family through this mysterious new land.

So, we've got Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming back. Also Thundercats. Transformers and G.I. Joe are here. That's everything, right? No more '80s cartoons and toy lines to bring back? Oh, wait, here's one more.

Voltron is coming back as a revamped animated series. This time it will air on Nicktoons, and they're calling it Voltron Force. World Event Productions and Classic Media are developing this, with Kickstart Productions, makers of Wolverine and the X-Men, co-producing.

Voltron Force sure sounds like a hip, modern revamp of the old Voltron: Defender of the Universe, but Variety reports that the new series will actually stay faithful to the original. Voltron was a giant robot who formed when five individual robot lions joined together. Because sometimes a team of five individual robot lions just isn't enough to get the job done.

Nicktoons will air 26 half-hour shows starting next year. Mattel will produce a new toy line to go along with it, so a new crop of kids and buy all the lions that make up Voltron. World Event Productions president Ted Koplar told Variety it's really all about the toys.

"What paramount is getting the toys right," Koplar said. "They're pretty involved toys that have to transform and fit together. It's an exciting way to introduce the brand to a generation that isn't familiar with Voltron."
