Psych creator Steve Franks has revealed that a film version of the USA Network comedy-drama is being planned.

The writer told TV Squad that a movie version of the show - which stars James Roday as fake psychic Shawn Spencer - has been in the pipeline for some time.

"We've talked, the last two years, about doing a Psych feature at the end of the season," he explained. "And that's the thing that I think we would all get on board for... shoot a feature-length movie. It's all about making financial sense for everybody. But that would be the dream for us. And we have the idea, and we're ready, and we'd be really excited to do that."

Franks admitted that he intends each episode of Psych to feel cinematic.

"I say we're making a little summer popcorn movie each week," he said. "And that's why it's so fun to change genres, to change worlds. [It's] a chance for me to sort of fulfill all my childhood fantasies of movies that I wanted to make, within the TV show construct."

He also revealed that the series will remain light in tone and condemned other shows for being "disturbing and depressing".

"For me, the biggest void on TV, right now is the light one-hour [programme]," he said. "[If] you want to watch a mystery show, ... outside of Castle and a couple others, you're kind of locked into this really dark, really depressing, 'let's-look-at-blood-under-microscopes' [style]."

The fifth season of Psych will premiere on July 14 on the USA Network.

Nurse Jackie is the latest US show to be snatched by BSkyB from a rival broadcaster.

The dark comedy drama, starring Edie Falco as a nurse with a painkiller addiction, will switch from BBC2 to Sky Atlantic for the launch of the third series on Tuesday 5 July.

Made by CSB Television Studios for US cable channel Showtime, Nurse Jackie has won two Emmy awards.

Earlier this week Sky confirmed that it had bought the UK rights to all future series of Glee, which will switch from E4 to Sky1 in the autumn.
