Bell (CBS' Harper's Island) was busy Wednesday meeting with the show's new writing staff. The challenge now, he said, is to map out what direction V might take over the next several seasons. The original V used the story of an alien invasion as an allegory for Nazi Germany; the new V will tackle issues of government, devotion, race and faith, the trade paper reported. "Especially when you look at our current times, with the economy, wars and social strife, it's the perfect time for a force like this to come along," Bell told the trade paper. "In many ways this is a very American show, about the individual vs. society. It's about how America can appreciate and question things that seem to be too good to be true." ABC has ordered 13 episodes of V this year; show is set to launch sometime after January. The show will have a definite beginning, middle and end, executives said. Bell, a veteran of such genre shows as Angel and The X-Files, will work as an executive producer alongside The 4400's Scott Peters, who wrote the V pilot, and Jason Hall and Steve Pearlman. Yves Simoneau directed and executive-produced the pilot.

For someone who was a major part of the original series in all its forms, I'm dying to know what you think of V returning to television.

Singer: I think a good story can always be retold, and I think it is a good story. I think its relevance is as powerful today as it was then. The same forces of subversion and the same sort of fascist tendencies are afoot, and I think it's a cautionary tale that bears retelling.

Everyone who watched the original show knows the ending. Do you think it can work even with that knowledge?

Singer: Well, I do. ... I don't know if they will keep the original ending or perhaps modify it. I think it's more in the telling of the tale of society being subverted. And society being wooed into channels that are disruptive and dumbed down. I believe that those are the ways in which the story's retelling sort of supersedes that plot line, because it's the human interaction. It's the failings and dangers of our own nature that lie at the heart of this story.

Last time I spoke to Robert Englund (who played Willie in the original series), he said he'd like to do a cameo in the new series. Would you be interested in doing one?

Singer: Oh, sure. I think it would be fun to do a cameo. I think it would be fun to do more than a cameo and see where that leads us. The nice thing about a program like V is that it's open to all sorts of add-ons and interpretations. The possibilities are definitely there. I am certainly an admirer and friend of Kenneth Johnson, so it's possible that that sort of thing might actually occur.

More than 25 years after the first V mini-series hit the airwaves, V will be returning to television screens with a well-cast revival that - unlike many other recent remakes - actually delivers and in some ways surpasses the original model.

Many fans will be lucky enough to preview the series premiere at the Comic-Con International later this week - both during a Warner Bros. "Preview Night" on Wednesday and during the V panel on Saturday. If you are attending the Con and have the time, take a look ; otherwise you�ll have to wait for ABC�s midseason launch.

V starts off with the earth shaking - literally. Very early on we meet Erica Evans, the series� protagonist who is played by Elizabeth Mitchell of LOST fame. Evans is a FBI agent who is raising a son named Tyler (newcomer Logan Huffman), and as a lead character she is the glue that keeps a lot of this together.

The 4400�s Joel Grestch plays Father Jack Landry, a man who is part of a church that hosts very few members in its congregation. However, with the coming of the Visitors, things start to change. There is some debate on whether or not the Visitors are included among "God�s creatures" and if this change is a good thing.

Other characters in the series pilot include Brandon, Tyler�s best friend who provides several one-liners for the situation (Jesse Wheeler) ; Ryan Nichols (Morris Chestnut), a man on the edge of proposing to Valerie Holt (Lourdes Benedicto) until a major decision changes everything ; Chad Decker (Scott Wolf), a reporter who has obtained interviews through unethical means before and is now chosen as the Visitors� mouthpiece ; Georgie (David Richmond-Peck), one of the organizers and leaders of the anti-Visitor resistance ; and Dale Maddox (Alan Tudyk), the FBI partner of Erica Evans. Among the Visitors is their leader, "Anna" (Firefly�s Morena Baccarin), who can be described in two words - "extremely creepy." is one of the best ways to describe Morena Baccarin as the leader and head representative of the Visitors, "Anna." Even the way she blinks comes off as lizardlike and slimy. However, when she speaks, it�s so smooth, you can see why the people of Earth are easily under her thrall. Also very alluring to the humans is Lisa (Smallville�s Laura Vandervoort), a character whose charms quickly snag Tyler Evans to the side of the Visitors.

While the show deals with serious subject matter and handles it well, it really does take the time to have a sense of humor about itself. There are some pop cultural references in the show - at one point a joke is made comparing the proceedings to Independence Day, in which another character points out that that movie itself was inspired by many other science-fiction predecessors. Scott Peters also manages to slip in a reference to his previous television series, The 4400. Inside jokes don�t provide the show�s only humor - at one point, Scott Wolf�s reporter character ask the Visitors� Anna if there is such thing as an ugly Visitor. Looking at the actors cast, I�m wondering the exact same thing.

As the original V had parallels to World War II and the Holocaust, the new V also has parallels - this time to modern times� current obsession with celebrity and search for idols. When these "idols" embrace the adoration, the devotion could become something very dangerous, and V plays with those themes very successfully.

If there is any issue I have at all with the V pilot, it is with the pacing. Maybe I am used to the way the original miniseries played out, but it seems like the story of how the Visitors came into power and won everyone over could have been spread over a longer period of time. As things were, it seemed like they arrived, then it�s "Two Weeks Later," and then people are going on tours of the mothership.

July 22, 2009 - Comic-Con attendees got their first look at a much anticipated new TV series tonight, as Warner Bros debuted the pilot to the new ABC series V - A remake of the classic 1980s miniseries, which spawned a sequel miniseries and a short-lived ongoing series. This new version, from The 4400�s creator, Scott Peters, once again tells the story of what happens when a group of alien "visitors" arrive on Earth, with seemingly benevolent intentions. But soon, even as the majority greets them with open arms, a select few wonder if there are reasons to question and even fear the Visitors and just what their true intentions are.

The Comic-Con audience was definitely appreciative of the cast, which includes some very familiar faces when it comes to genre material � most notably Lost�s Juliet, Elizabeth Mitchell, in what is arguably the lead role of FBI agent Erica Evans, whose teenage son is one of those most swayed by the Visitors � particularly when he gets a look at Lisa, an alien played by Smallville�s Supergirl, Laura Vandervoort. And if you�re a Firefly fan, V has two big cast members for you � Alan Tudyk as Erica�s partner, Dale, and Morena Baccarin as Anna, the leader of the Visitors � a character obviously greatly influenced by the original�s iconic Diana. Baccarin is very good as the confident, cunning alien, who obviously knows that image is everything.

Overall, audience reaction certainly seemed positive to V, which had plenty of intriguing moments, as several of the characters tried to process what was occurring, including a reporter (played by Scott Wolf) who sees his star rise after he meets Anna, and Father Jack Landry, a priest played by The 4400�s Joel Gretsch. Gretsch has some of the best moments in the pilot, playing a man of God who is trying to reconcile his beliefs with the amazing events that are occurring.

The V pilot suffers a bit from feeling rushed � we are shown events that obviously are supposed to happen over the course of weeks, but with only a 44 minute running time, it�s sometimes hard for some of the things occurring to resonate, and I found myself wishing it was a two-hour pilot. Also, some of the dialogue is a bit clich�, mostly involving Morris Chestnut�s character, a guy trying to make up for past misdeeds as he begins a new life with a woman he loves. However, there is a ton of potential here for a very strong ongoing series, and some nicely done revelations near the end set the stage for bigger things to come. The fact that Angel / Alias alum Jeffrey Bell is coming onboard as showrunner also add to the overall excitement around this series, which debuts midseason on ABC.

Fans who viewed the pilot of ABC's upcoming reboot of the alien-invasion series V at San Diego Comic-Con may not have seen the final version (SPOILERS ahead).

Executive producer and writer Scott Peters said that he is still tweaking the first episode, particularly a fight scene between visitors and human resistance near the end of the hour.

"We're doing a little bit of reshooting for the fight, because we feel like we want to make the visitors even more formidable and even more awesome," Peters said in a group interview last month at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Like the original 1983 miniseries, the new show deals with the arrival of alien Visitors who promise advanced technology in exchange for water and minerals. But as viewers of the original miniseries know, the Visitors turn out to be something more sinister.

Peters (The 4400) said that the new show sets up a bit more backstory for the aliens' presence, requiring the final fight in the pilot to be more extreme. "The original intent was that they would come in with silent weaponry," Peters said. "They wouldn't be [here] with guns, and they wouldn't be with lasers, because if they ever got captured or anything happened, they didn't want a piece of alien technology laying around. They also didn't want to draw attention. So they're very adept at hand-to-hand combat, which all makes logical sense. The feeling was it lessened their ability to seem as formidable as they are. So we're going to be adjusting that a little bit."

The fight scene as it was initially shot shows humans doing their best to brawl the alien visitors, who can jump higher and move faster, thanks to wirework. Peters wants to give visitors additional weaponry to make them even deadlier.

"We actually do want to introduce a tiny little bit of Visitor tech that comes in," Peters continued. "What we're determined to do is introduce a little bit, a new piece of alien tech, Visitor tech, try to do it every episode. Certainly try to give a little bit of culture, peel back the onion of what their mandate is, what's really behind it, what's really going on, and just see the political stuff that goes on aboard the ship, just like we have political stuff underneath the ship."

But Peters doesn't want to turn the show into a "battle of the week." "Oh, we're not going to shy away from an action element, by any means," Peters said. "It's just not going to be the driving force of the show. It kind of becomes a little less interesting to us. To us, the characters drive the show. Yes, it's set against this huge science fiction backdrop, but I can watch spaceships for a couple of minutes and be, 'Yeah, it's cool. Now what have you got?' I can watch an action sequence for a couple of minutes and go, 'That's great. Now what have you got?' Characters have to be the thing that drive the show and that you really invest in, and when you do have the action sequences and you do come to the new technology, it's just icing on the cake. It's super cool."

The characters include FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Father Jack Landry (Joel Gretsch), the investigator and the skeptical priest who discover the resistance in the first episode. "It'll take a little time [for the resistance] to grow, but Georgie [David Richmond-Peck] will certainly be back, and certainly we introduce some new folks along the way," Peters said. "But, yes, Elizabeth and Joel are not going to be the only ones fighting the war."

Erica will face an additional challenge dealing with her teenage son Tyler (Logan Huffman), who finds himself recruited by the Visitors, or "Vs." "That's exactly going to be her issue," Peters said. "'If I had a hard time fixing it before, how the hell am I going to fix it now?'"

Tyler is tempted by Visitor recruiter Lisa, played by Smallville's Laura Vandervoort. "You will absolutely be seeing more of Laura Vandervoort," Peters said. "She was wonderful. She's joined the cast as a series regular, and you can expect to see a lot more with Tyler as things move forward. She has a couple interesting things up her sleeve as well."

Getting back up to the spaceship also adds a little pizzazz to the weekly political and religious metaphors. "That's also a mandate of ours for ourselves," Peters said. "Yes, it's mostly an earthbound show, but we love the candy of going up and seeing the inside of this place."

Meanwhile, Father Jack is dealing with religious implications of alien visitors. If the visitors can cure our diseases and provide technological answers, why would people turn to God?

"He's sort of in the business of asking people to devote themselves to his religion," Peters said. "This is a guy who used to step outside, look up at the sky, where in his mind God would be, and now there's a spaceship in the way."

Another aspect of V deals with the media. Anna (Morena Baccarin) opens up to a journalist, Chad Decker (Scott Wolf), giving him exclusive access. That is, of course, as long as he asks only the questions she wants him to.

"Chad is stuck," Peters said. "He's a guy who was plucked out of obscurity. She didn't pick Tom Brokaw to do it. She picked a guy who wouldn't get up and leave. So she's pretty good at manipulating folks."

The pilot also leaves the fate of Erica's FBI partner, Dale Maddox (Dollhouse's Alan Tudyk), up in the air. Peters only hinted about plans to bring him into the fold. "That's a hard question, because I don't want to give anything away," Peters said. "We love Alan. Clearly the audience loves Alan, and it would be awesome to find ways to maybe see him again somehow."

V premieres in November.

Executive producer Jeffrey Bell also promised that star Morena Baccarin, who plays the alien leader Anna, will indeed eat a rodent of some kind. "We want to find a way to do it," Bell said, but added that if the producers simply duplicated the scene from the original miniseries, "been there, done that." He added that the new show will feature homages to other iconic moments from the original miniseries. Executive producer Scott Peters added that the producers were exploring a way to bring some of the original actors into the show, though not necessarily playing the same characters.
