August 11, 2011 More than 5,000 of you nominated. More than 60,000 of you voted. And now the results are in. The winners of NPR's Top 100 Science-Fiction and Fantasy survey are an intriguing mix of classic and contemporary titles. Over on NPR's pop culture blog, Monkey See, you can find one fan's thoughts on how the list shaped up, get our experts' take, and have the chance to share your own.

A quick word about what's here, and what's not: Our panel of experts reviewed hundreds of the most popular nominations and tossed out those that didn't fit the survey's criteria (after — we assure you — much passionate, thoughtful, gleefully nerdy discussion). You'll notice there are no young adult or horror books on this list, but sit tight, dear reader, we're saving those genres for summers yet to come.

So, at last, here are your favorite science-fiction and fantasy novels. (And a printable version, to take with you to the bookstore.)

Just proves to me that not enough people have read Malazan, it should at least swap places with GRRM, imo snooty.gif

I've read 31 of the books/series on that list - but I'm more surprised by the number of classics on there that I've not read. Shall have to rectify that smile.gif

Good to see Ender's Game placing so high - brilliant book thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

And as for the saddoes who voted for Goodkind ... rolleyes.gif laugh.gif

I do actually wonder why LotR continues to top polls like this. Yes, I know it pretty much created the fantasy genre as we know it, but it's actually pretty bloody awful to read. It's almost like people feel they have to vote for it eermm.gif shrug.gif

I've only read 13 of those I think and a couple of them I don't think would make my personal top 100 and sad to say I don't read much sci fi/fantasy these days.

I wonder if A Song of Ice and Fire would have been that high a year or so ago.

I doubt it very much. I reckon the people who voted for it haven't read A Feast for Crows or A Dance With Dragons, either laugh.gif

It's strange that some on the list are listed as single books, when they're a part of a series (like Ender's Game, Hitchhikers, etc), whilst others are shown as a whole series/trilogies (Ice & Fire, Wheel of Time, Malazan etc). I can't imagine many people wanted to vote for the Dune series as a whole, but I guess it's down to the way they were nominated shrug.gif

A bit difficult to do a top 100 but my top 10 (counting a series as a single book but sequels seperate) would be in no particular order...

Belgariad - David Eddings
Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
Riverworld - Philip Jose Farmer
Master of Five Magics - Lyndon Hardy
The Riftwar Saga - Raymond E Feist
The Dragon Lance Chronicles - Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman
Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn - Tad Williams
The Empires Trilogy - Raymond E Feist & Janny Wurts
The Lord of the Rings - J R R Tolkien

A very rough list as I haven't read most for a while and I'm not sure I'd like them now as much as I used to. Which is one of the reasons I don't re-read the Belgariad.

Interesting list. I'd go along with Ender's Game, Hyperion and A Deepness in the Sky ponder.gif

No Iain M. Banks or Peter F. Hamilton or Neal Asher, though, so I can't take the list seriously snooty.gif laugh.gif

The fact that it's lumped Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind together has put me off reading the WoT books forever laugh.gif ninja.gif

Interesting that Zelazany's 'Chronicles of Amber' is beside Erikson, though - the Amber books are on my wishlist so I might have to accelerate that purchase a bit ponder.gif
