CAROLINE (Dushku) – code name “Echo” – is an “Active,” a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected, the Actives don’t just perform their hired roles, they wholly become – with mind, personality and physiology – whomever the client wants or needs them to be. Whether imprinted to be a lover, an assassin, a corporate negotiator or a best friend, the Actives know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time.

Confined between missions to a secret facility known as the “Dollhouse,” Echo and the other Actives, including SIERRA (Dichen Lachman) and VICTOR (Enver Gjokaj), are assigned engagements by ADELLE DEWITT (Olivia Williams), one of the Dollhouse’s leaders. After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler, turned head-of security, BOYD LANGTON (Harry Lennix), returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings, experiences and knowledge are erased by TOPHER BRINK (Fran Kranz), the Dollhouse’s genius programmer. Echo enters the next scenario with no memory of before – or does she ? – as she seemingly begins to remember her original memories and slowly pieces together her mysterious past.

Former FBI Agent PAUL BALLARD (Tahmoh Penikett) determined to solve the mystery of the DOLLHOUSE and find the missing Caroline, accomplished his goal in the first season finale and was convinced (or was it coerced ?) to become Echo’s new handler. DOLLHOUSE revolves around Echo’s blossoming self-awareness and her desire to discover her true identity. But with each new engagement, comes a new memory and increased danger inside and outside the Dollhouse.

DOLLHOUSE is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who directed the pilot and serves as executive producer and writer. Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and David Solomon are co-executive producers, and Eliza Dushku serves as a producer.

Now that Amy Acker’s Happy Town pilot has been picked up by ABC, what does that mean for Dollhouse’s Dr. Saunders ? — Lynn

MATT : I ran your question by Eliza Dushku when I chatted her up at Fox’s upfront party, and while the Dollhouse lead/producer is unsure just yet Acker’s Happy news will impact Dr. Saunders’/Whiskey’s presence in Season 2, she said that at the very least, "I hope Amy will pop in and grace us now and then." Beyond that situation, sources assure me that snipped Season 2 budget or not, the Dollhouse staff will suffer no casualties.

Question : Since Amy Acker’s show Happy Town has been picked up, what does that mean for Dr. Saunders on Dollhouse ? Is she headed for the attic ? —Mike W.

Ausiello : Not if puppetmaster Joss Whedon has anything to say about it. He tells me he’ll be "sending [Happy producers] chocolate and flowers," he laughs. "We’re desperate to have her." As such, he is disinclined to put another doctor in the d’house. Only if "we find out that we’re not going to use her for the bulk of the season" would he do that, he says. "[But] everyone is not going to be in every episode, so it’s perfectly possible that there will just be stories that don’t involve Dr. Saunders."

Dollhouse : The Season 2 Dolls We Wanna See

Dollhouse has been renewed for a second season, and Joss Whedon fans are no doubt praying fervently for the same dramatic upswing in quality seen in the second seasons of Buffy and Angel. We think the odds are good that the show will get better, especially if we’re introduced to more actives, or "dolls," and hopefully Joss will continue to draw from his roster of talented past players. The revelation of Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as Alpha and Amy Acker (Angel) as Whiskey makes for a total of nine actives we’ve gotten to know so far. But there are 26 words in the military alphabet they use as their naming system, which leaves more than a dozen dolls to introduce ! More, if Alpha keeps killing them the way he has been. — Zach Oat

Question: With Sarah Connor Chronicles canceled, please tell me there is a possibility of Summer Glau making an appearance on Dollhouse! --Jenn

Ausiello: The noise you're about to hear is the sound of the Whedonverse exploding. Joss confirms to me exclusively that, well, he's one step ahead of you. "If anybody thinks [bringing Summer onto Dollhouse] hasn't occurred to me already then they have not met me," he says. "I mentioned it to her before [SCC] was canceled. I was like, 'You know, we should get you in the 'house.' But first we have to come up with something that works." And casting her as a doll would not work, insists Whedon. "Summer would be perfect to play an active, but she's done that [type of role] a lot," he says. "I'd rather see her play someone who talks too much. The most fun I have is when I get somebody who's good and comfortable at doing something, and then I make them do something else. Summer said to me, 'I would like to play a normal girl before I die of extreme old age.'" Got any ideas? Head to the comments section!

If the cast of Dollhouse is going to stay intact, does that mean Miracle Laurie will be back, too ? Mellie/November is my favorite character. — Katy

MATT : You and I are likethis when it comes to Mellie. Alas, we should both prepare for heartbreak. Though the Dollhouse scribes don’t return to their Smith Coronas until next week, an insider tells me that since Paul negotiated Mellie’s freedom from the Dollhouse in the Season 1 finale, "It would seem that Miracle’s storyline has come to a close."

Joss Whedon: Who will return, and who might not, to the Dollhouse

Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon told EW.com that he is two weeks into breaking stories for the Fox sci-fi series' second season, having wrapped his top-secret horror film The Cabin in the Woods on May 29.

With one season under their belt, Whedon and his writers "understand what works, and what didn't work so well or what we weren't so thrilled about," he told the site. "We don't have the onus of trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders. We can just be ourselves. And so the stories we're breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody's on-board in the room, and it's never flowed better."

Whedon added that season two won't pick up right with Alpha storyline, but a little bit later. (Alan Tudyk, who has scored a role on ABC's midseason series V, may not be available right away, but Whedon hopes he'll be able to use the character at some point.) "Alpha will always be a part of the equation," he said.

Whedon added that he's also hoping to work out time-sharing with the producers of ABC's Happy Town, which nabbed Amy Acker, aka Dr. Saunders/Whiskey.

What about Summer Glau, Whedon's former Firefly/Serenity co-star who is now free from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? "We're still breaking the episodes," Whedon says, "but we didn't honestly go into the season going, 'Now how can we figure out how to service Summer?' when we already have a huge ensemble. I adore Summer and she's phenomenal, but I have to service the cast I have first. If something comes up that's good enough, my God, I'd hound her. But the rumors of her becoming a big part of the show are greatly exaggerated."

Dollhouse returns in the fall.

Reaper Creators Joining Dollhouse

Once again, Twitter tells us so much...

US, June 11, 2009 - Ah, Twitter. It’s the new source of so much time wasting, but also increasingly a place where morsels of news are coming from. The latter situation is the case here, as a new tweet from Dollhouse writer Maurissa Tancharoen informed us that the creators of Reaper, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have joined the writing staff of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse for Season 2.

To be specific, what Tancharoen actually wrote was, "Fazekas and Butters are in D-house and they’re awesome." I checked with 20th Century Fox and confirmed that Tancharoen was not just hinting that the duo had stopped by for a scone at the Dollhouse writing office, and that they have indeed joined the series.

Fazekas and Butters recently signed an exclusive deal with 20th Century Fox – the same studio that produces Dollhouse. While that deal involves developing new projects, it’s not unusual for writer/producers to first take a job at a pre-existing series when they sign new deals of this sort. Similarly, Bryan Fuller returned to Heroes when he signed his recent deal with NBC Universal, though he also will be working on new projects too.

I discovered that Fazekas and Butters have taken the slots vacated by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain. Craft and Fain, another writing duo, left Dollhouse at the end of Season 1 to join Lie to Me, where they will be reunited with new showrunner Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield. Craft and Fain worked on The Shield after their stint on Whedon’s Angel.

"Dollhouse" Tv Series - 2009 Comic Con - Eonline.com Report

If you need a reason to love Comic-Con, you would need look no further than to experiences like today’s Dollhouse panel.

First we got to watch the infamous lost episode of Dollhouse, "Epitaph One," on giant screens with an audience of fellow fans, and then Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon, who did not come to his reputation as a great storyteller by accident, sat down and talked to us about the future of his dark drama Dollhouse. Comic-Con 2009 Franchise Brick

Joss was joined by star Eliza Dushku in a glittering gold dress, and the two faced down questions about how "Epitaph One" will change the show, how the cast is changing for season two (a fan favorite Buffy-Angel actor will be visiting !), and what he’s really warning us about when he’s talking about a zombie apocalypse...

Was any casting news for Dollhouse season two revealed ?

According to Joss, Dollhouse season two cast will be comprised of "old friends...and maybe a couple of other faces you recognize." Joss later revealed some specifics : Buffy and Angel alum Alexis Denisof (aka Mr. Alyson Hannigan) is going to be a recurring character in season two. Yay ! (Joss : "Eliza, you will take a blade to him at one point.") On a related note, "If the stars align we might also see a little [Summer] Glau." Come on, stars !

Were there any surprise guests ?

Dichen Lachmann, who plays Active Sierra, and Fran Kranz, who plays dangerously smart scientist Topher Brink, both joined the panel midsession. Dichen is so soft-spoken it was hard to hear her but what a beauty ! She mentioned she loved the episode where she got to play with all the guns and the one where she was Topher’s friend. For his part, Fran Kranz was all agog at the packed ballroom, saying, "Wow...this is very humbling. Thank you so much."

What happens in the first episode of Dollhouse season two ?

The three main characters from "Epitaph One" (Felicia Day, the kid and the "funny and mean" redhead guy who is not Joss or Alan Tudyk) all briefly appear in the season premiere.

What impact will "Epitaph One" have on the rest of the show ?

Joss implied that the leap forward was in part a consequence of their expectation that they would be canceled, so they are reeling some stuff back in, telling the crowd, "What we intend to do is honor what you’ve seen here today, but a lot of it were memories." And memory is famously fallible.

What happens to the people whose faces were sliced up by villain Alpha ?

In season two of Dollhouse, Victor’s (Enver Gjokaj) scars are healed, and Whiskey’s (Amy Acker) discovery that she is not who she thought she was is explored.

Will the whole human bondage aspect of the Dollhouses be explored further in season two ? Joss : "As you can see from this lost episode, everything turns out fine." (Joss is being sarcastic. Actually everything burns down in "Epitaph One," but it looks cool.)

Did Joss have a wicked comment about another genre TV show ?

When a fan asked if the writers were concerned that reworking the show drastically would cause general Dollhouse system failure, Joss said, "As long as we don’t send anyone to feudal Japan, we should be fine." For those not clear on the matter, that was a Heroes slam.

Did Joss say anything crazy and profound about our lives today ?

Why, yes, Joss did say something crazy and profound about our lives today. Someone wanted to know if Joss had a thing against giant corporations and Joss said, "Have you been in America ? I like to consider myself a great documentarian. The entire structure is designed to mess with your minds, to combine selling you things with entertaining you to keep you in line to make you think that you need the things they want you to need and to stay away from the things that they want you to stay away from, to keep them in power, to share none of it. This is all happening. There are lights in the darkness. The art that we get to create because of our powerful patrons let us is one of them, but sometimes, yeah, it’s like running the daycare on the Death Star. The truth is there is power and manipulation that is controlling almost all of our every thought, and that is why I love this show so much." So say we all...

Check back in coming days for much more from Dollhouse at Comic-Con, including (hopefully) a video of Joss and Eliza Dushku’s backstage press conference. For now, please post in the comments if you’re excited about the relaunch of Dollhouse !

"Dollhouse" Tv Series - 2009 Comic Con - Ew.com Report

Proof that it pays to come to Comic-Con : On Friday, rabid Joss Whedon fans got to see an unaired 13th episode of Dollhouse that takes place 10 years into the future. Positioned as a veritable road map for the fledgling series, the episode tries to address the apocalyptic outcome of the Dollhouse world - i.e., what happens when too many memories are wiped and everyone becomes, well, zombies. Shot on video for about $1 million less than what a typical episode costs, according to one source, the episode features mostly new characters discovering a deserted dollhouse

Moving forward, Whedon plans to save Fox some cash by only shooting Dollhouse on video (trust us, it still looks good). And Whedon will "continue to deal with the abuse of power and what it brings out in the characters."

That prompted one fan to inquire about Whedon’s obsession with big corporations. "Have you been in America ?" Whedon replied. "I consider myself a great documentarian... There is power and manipulation [everywhere]. That’s why I like this show so much."

Battlestar Galactica star Jamie Bamber will guest-star in the season-two premiere episode of Fox's Dollhouse, joining his former Battlestar castmate Tahmoh Penikett, who is a regular.

E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos reported the news, based on "network sources":

But where does he fit into the storylines? Here's what we're hearing: We're told that Bamber's character is heavily involved in an engagement Echo (Eliza Dushku) and her new handler Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett) have been assigned to.
Dollhouse returns on Fox in the fall.
