Captain Tightpants wants to be the Greatest American Hero. "I know I'm Canadian, but I think I could put my hat in for that one," says Fillion.

The Dawn essay and the feminist essay are quite interesting though as one of the cute girlies on here said some of the paragraphs are so huge and complicated I almost lost the will to live. I had not thought very much about the development of Dawn. I tended to think of her as surrogate daughter allowing Buffy to express her caring side. The feminist argument is somewhat compelling. I think I agree that the message Buffy delivers is a 'moderate feminist' argument. As Bryan Appleyard has commented the worlds of Clueless and Buffy are deeply conservative ie they care very deeply about right and wrong. Example - check out Buffy's Aristotelian(?) 'righteous indignation' when confronting Faith about the accidental murder in erm Consequences. I think I agree with the writer that Buffy is about women making it in 'typical American society' so it is a matter of evolution not revolution. This seems to me to be a good thing. I am not convinced that rejecting the past is a good thing. Arguably the 'liberalism' of Buffy is a bit limited just as the 'liberalism' of Star Trek was limited. Uhura was little more than a telephonist. Buffy needs the help of Giles and the scoobies so she is not fantastically independent. In other words Buffy seems to be a moderate rather than an Andrea Dworkin bonkers radical. This seems to me to be a good thing. Another problem is the fact that all the girlies are walking wet dreams. Having a really ugly girl in the group might have been a strong statement of intent. The obvious rejoinder is that all light entertainment is based on sex appeal hence the girlies must be dreamy. I enjoyed the idea that Principal Wood is a domesticator hence he is the final stage in Faith's redemption pulling her back into the American mainstream. In general I think the 'moderate' message is a good thing as 'extremists'(Andrea Dworkin? Margaret Atwood?)are arguably close to repulsive with their revolutionary agendas. Finally, one thing struck me about the 'conservative nature of Buffy'(ie if you do something 'bad' then you are invariably punished) and that is the fact that such an attitude puts it squarely in the film Scream's firing line. Scream brilliantly took all the rules of horror films and effectively satirised them via ridicule or inverted them eg my favourite example is the beginning of Scream 2 where Cici is sobriety girl and yet is 'punished' for her 'good behaviour' turning horror conventions on their head. Buffy seems to live in a pre-Scream world. sk |

The Producers Guild of America announced today that Joss Whedon will be honored with its prestigious 2010 Vanguard Award, joining a list of previous recipients that includes George Lucas, James Cameron and John Lasseter, Deadline Hollywood reported.
Whedon's humorous response won't be surprising to anyone who's seen his superhero spoof Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog or watched the way he accepted previous awards. "This is an honor I didn't expect and probably don't deserve," he said. "The truth is, I've never actually guarded a van. But I am a super-total visionary, so that fits. I'm ready to take my place next to the guys who made THX 1138 and Tin Toy (Did they ever do anything else, btw? They showed such promise.). This is a time of radical change in media delivery and content, and I'm honestly proud the PGA has singled me out as someone who sort of knows what's going on." The award will be presented at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at the Hollywood Palladium. |

LoveFilm picks top 10 suckers for vampires. Buffy takes the top spot with her Angel romance, beating Sookie and Bella.

Fox announced its midseason schedule yesterday, and amid the excitement about Idol and 24’s returns, one major piece of info seemed to get lost: There won’t be any new Glee episodes between December 9 and April 13. Uh, slushie-in-your-face, Fox! What the what?
When it returns next year, Glee will be moving to Tuesdays, where it’ll have a small upstart indie series called American Idol as its lead-in. (This means it will basically never start on time.) But something else is on Tuesdays at 9. Something else I love. Something people are pretty into, something that’s about to end, something that inspires obsessive, intense viewership: Lost. Lost vs. Glee, you guys. This is like choosing between coffee and beer. Why is life so unfair? I guess God is punishing me for my wickedness. I don’t think any of us are going to give up on one of these shows — don’t even think it! that’s how the Evil Eye gets you! — but I’m wondering which you’ll DVR for later, and which you’ll watch right away. What’s a more pressing show: Lost or Glee? |

The idea that Buffy is dated is rather startling. On the contrary I think it is a good thing technology and fads sit in the background. Faddy obsessions date terribly quickly while great dialogue and human relationships are close to being able to resist the tooth of time. That Buffy focuses on the latter is a real boon. I think most of the writers grew up in the 70s and 80s so Buffy will probably be a reflection of the team looking back on their school experiences. This suggests Buffy will not be cutting edge eg Jane Espensons's Band Candy where the teachers seem to make an atavistic return to the 70's rather than whatever decade they 'really' belong to. Going with the spirit of my comments I wonder of Glee will seem terribly dated in the future if it reflects the current state of the web. I have never watched Veronica Mars so I cannot comment. sk |

I want to see Veronica Mars, as Katie and others on here have raved about it.
There's a 3 season boxset available on Play.com for around seventy five quid, region 2, but looking closely at the picture of the set, it appears to have French wording on the box, so not sure if it would be OK to buy (second hand). Nothing against the French, Claire!! It also says on the Play.com page that The Hoff, Parker Stevenson and some other guy star in it. I. Don't. Think. So. (I've checked their IMDb!!). |

QMx to make stuff for Firefly, Dr. Horrible
Announced at the Creation con yesterday, QMx will soon be making officially licensed collectibles for Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. We're talking props, ships, t-shirts, maquettes and novelties (keychains, bumper stickers, etc.) So what do you want to see? Me, I'd suggest for replica catalyzers, blinking van-top bombs with magnetic bottoms for personal use, Vera, the big red button, letters from Bad Horse, a variety of pistols, and maquettes including the Dr. Horrible crew, a bathing Inara and a naked Mal on a rock. Let's go, people! (bashinginminds) |
