Season 5 is going to be the last season of Atlantis , but will conclude with a 2 hour movie sometime next year and may have more movies after like Ark of Truth and Continuum with SG-1.

I'm not sure whether I'm surprised or not. Sci Fi seem to have a habit of killing shows which are, well, sci fi

Having just spent an hour or so reading about and remembering Farscape it's reminded me that the best series are usually cut down in their prime (that's assuming season 5 will be quality, which wasn't exactly indicated by 5x01 ) whilst the average ones overstay their welcome

At least it will get a chance to finish properly. Let's hope it goes out with a roar rather than a whimper

The season 5 opener did feel a little flat but that's just me being picky I'm sure they could have made a quality sixth season I think people would rather have had that then a film?

I'll be happy if it ends on a high, but still think they could have gone on slightly longer without going too downhill. SG-1 went on too long and Atlantis has been cut short, at least it will make the 100 ep mark. Stupid networks cancel all the good shows.

Unfortunately Sci Fi set the precedent with Farscape. In that show's case they had given the green light for season 5 and production on season 4 had virtually finished when they changed their minds (they decided to put the funds into SG-1 instead - which makes me hate that series even more ), leaving a massive cliffhanger with no hope of conclusion.

Eventually - long story - they gave the go ahead to make the mini-series The Peacekeeper Wars so that the story could be "finished". It was a success and it has obviously given the execs ideas. Since then they have pulled the plug on SG-1, BSG and Atlantis but agreed to make more "movies" after each show's conclusion.

It seems to be becoming a trend with the Sci Fi channel to do things this way. I'm not sure I like it but they obviously think it keeps everyone happy - especially their accountants.
