Title: Boycott The Dvds On Release!

star_fury - February 26, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)

I know a lot of you are looking forward to the release of the season 1 DVDs but if you could hold off for a month or so after its initial release. Hopefully if enough people hold off ordering them this will make them realise that £35 (from Amazon, even more elsewhere) is too much for what is essentially half a season of television.

If you continue to buy them at those prices they will continue to overprice them!

Crichton Kicks - February 26, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
I held off on the TNG/DS9 DVDs on the pricing principle, likewise the buffy/Angel/XF ones until they came down in price.

That being said, I'll still probaby get the BSG ones @ £35

ken1701e - February 26, 2005 10:40 PM (GMT)
God knows when I will get round to watching the mini series never mind buying the series that I havent watched.

Probably try to save the money for the ENTERPRISE ones instead!!!

SkiBore - February 27, 2005 01:03 PM (GMT)
It might be worth waiting for the R1 release – the R1 Mini Series had a director/producers Audio Commentary missing from the R2. :shifty:

I know £35 doesn't seem that much but if you double it then it becomes a £70 box-set for a larger 20 plus episode season!

I've done the same as you Crichton kicks with farscape/Buffy/The X-Files because I feel they are ridiculously overpriced. I think for complete season (around 22 episodes) a RRP of around £50 which sells for around £40 is quite reasonable, especially for something that has been aired on television already.

Don't know offhand, but I'm wondering if Sky have input into the UK merchandising rights, given their funding of the series.

That being said, it's looking increasingly likely that they won't be involved with Season 2, hence season 2 may be more favourable, along the lines of other Sci-Fi shows such as SG1, which is competitively priced.

I don't know if it is something to do with Sky or not but if sales remain high it seems unlikely that they would reduce the price of season 2 to a more reasonable level.

As an ageing, cynical counter of beans it goes against my principles to pay full price when I know they'll come down in a while.

Currently engaged in searching out box sets of DS9 for just over £30 a go. :naughty:

star_fury - February 27, 2005 05:01 PM (GMT)
that's good to hear No. 6! Let's hope more people are the same so these prices can be driven down to acceptable levels.

I think at the moment, BSG is probably the only series I'd pay that amount of money for, for that number of episodes. Any other show, I'd be right there with you. If I said I'd be able to hold out where BSG's concerned and wait for the price to come down, then I'd be making promises that I wouldn't be sure I could keep ;)

Of course the alternative is that they think no one's interested in the DVDs and don't bother releasing anymore

star_fury - September 20, 2005 02:43 PM (GMT)
I'm sure virtually no one noticed I haven't been around for quite a while but I'm Back now! :)

well my patience has paid off dividends as I waited for the region 1 release which arrived in the post last weekend and was well worth the wait!

Five DVDs of Battlestar Gallactica goodness containing all of the episodes of the first season and the mini-series. Audio commentaries for the mini-series and nine episodes and a load of other extras on disc five

bye for now I'll be back soon.

laughitupfuzzball - September 20, 2005 05:49 PM (GMT)
:) We did notice your absence, glad your are back and getting better :)

I'm still waiting for Carnivale to go down
:tear: it must do sometime, I agree with you that it is just too much to pay.

My principles didn't w**k for Farscape though, I had to have them on their release dates

jamiearmour - September 20, 2005 07:42 PM (GMT)
I'm glad to have you back (as is everyone I'm sure) S_F. Glad you're feeling better, CFS can be an utter bit*h. One of my friends suffers bouts every couple of years, it's a terrible thing, glad you're on the mend and feel up to rejoining the madhouse

star_fury - September 21, 2005 12:07 PM (GMT)
laughitupfuzzball, HBO DVD box sets are notoriously overpriced which I find surprising since it seems that TV DVD box sets are generally going down in price.

My principles were slightly broken buying Battlestar Gallactica at just under £30 but at least it came with the mini-series and tons of audio commentaries unlike the lacklustre region 2. mostly I've kept my principles when it comes down to buying TV box-sets being extremely patient and rationing episodes over an extended period of time. The most I've spent on a DVD box set would be the X Files season one which I paid £48 for... A bargain at the time as most online places were selling it for £90 - £100! :o

You're right Jamie it is a terrible thing but I'm really pleased to be "rejoining the madhouse" again :) ... reading some of other threads I had almost forgotten how funny your posts can be

Crichton Kicks - September 21, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
Must admit, even I draw the line at coughing up money for HBO boxsets. Not even Carnivale's convinced me to part with £s. Morons.

willowroolz - September 22, 2005 09:49 AM (GMT)

Damn HBO for producing such excellent shows <_<

TheHighlander - September 22, 2005 02:35 PM (GMT)
Where did you purchase said copy of Battlestar for this price of bargainous proportions?
I too have been waiting for it to come down in price.
I still don't know what happened so please consider this a spoiler-free thread please people!

Dan Brown - September 22, 2005 03:28 PM (GMT)
Well I know HMV are selling Series 1 Region 2 for £24.99 at the moment...

Dan Brown - September 22, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
Also on the topic of HBO sets when they do come down in price they only come down to around normal price for a series. Around £30. The only HBO set I've ever bought is Band Of Brothers thats not a full 22 episode season either for £35 in the virgin megastore sale, but it did come in a nice metal tin.

Nick - September 22, 2005 03:48 PM (GMT)
it's £18 on Amazon at the mo

Went into my HMV yesterday and it's still £50!
Found it for £40 in Woolies.
Reckon I should purchse the Woolies copy or wait and see if HMV put it down?
Want to see the whole of series 1 before 2 comes on Sky.

I find Silver Screen to be even worse.

Taken any movie and it's a safe bet they're charging £25 for it

Boxsets are just as bad, regularly hovering around the £70 mark.

I picked up my region 1 copy from axel music.com for £30.99 but because I pre-ordered and pre-paid more than six weeks in advance I was given £3.06 p ( roughly 10 per cent of the cost of Battlestar Gallactica dvd) off of my next purchase.

http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/025192792823

you can pick it up cheaper on other American and Canadian DVDs sites but you run the risk of getting clobbered with a customs Bill. Axel music is located in Europe and isn't subject to customs fees !

the cheapest I can find for the region 2 box set WITHOUT the mini-series or the extras of the region 1 is £17.95 from DVD .co.uk

http://www.dvd.co.uk/product.asp?id=823345...VL6&CID=0&CTY=8

the region 2 mini-series from play.com is £7.99

willowroolz - September 26, 2005 07:28 PM (GMT)
You can also get the region 1 set from DVD Concept for £34.99, and they're also in Europe so no problems with Customs :)

I already have that on vhs, albeit with poor sound quality.
I shall just watch it to refresh my memory prior to viewing the series, having said that, if I find it for cheap too then I'll be snapping it up.
