I've been worldbuilding for Evonalé, lately (longtime readers will likely be surprised at some of the changes that are going to be worked in), and some links will show up in this section from that.
But first, in my search for translations of "river" and "stream" to mangle horribly into place names till even I can't track down my source if I forget it (i.e., where'd I get Aleyi from? and that was just a corrupted spelling), I just found a tool so astounding, so what I needed, and so useful for those of us who like comparing languages that I had to post it. It is… *drum roll* A dictionary that automatically translates an English word into 25 languages! ![]() Okay, so about half of them are in the original characters and unreadable, but I'll find some more dictionaries to post in this thread, too, for you. In the meantime, it still offers some words to corrupt for some languages I wouldn't have thought to check for myself, like *eyes open list with words I'm corrupting* Yiddish, Estonian, or Polish. Actually, I haven't maimed the Polish blotny (swamp) yet. That one just presents too many possibilities. There's a story in that name. Maybe the mad water magic-loving fairy decides to randomly put a swamp in the middle of a desert? That could get interesting. …And for the record, I'm keeping better record of where I'm getting place names from, now. Though losing where I got my world name may make that a moot point, unless anyone remembers what I told 'em? …And, it seems, that I've forgotten to give myself HTML access for this section of the site. Figures. -Misti |
