Title: A new...dive coaster perhaps?

Well, In the newspaper ( Eagle Tribune ) I read an article about SFNE trying to convince the city to allow it to build a 200 foot tall coaster. Now, I havent heard of many B&M loopers that are 200 feet tall......so im guessing that it could possibley be a dive coaster. If SFNE isnt allowed to raise the height limit, then bye bye coaster. Remember, its all up to the city!!!

CLPCastMember - August 2, 2008 12:53 PM (GMT)
And with SFNE's track record, I'm sure they'll graciously allow that...

turkishtwistalltheway - August 2, 2008 02:20 PM (GMT)
Your right! Hey, I have no problem with it! Maybe SFNE will have a reason to visit.

James - August 2, 2008 02:35 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. Well I've been on 3 of the 6 dive machines built so far and have nothing but good things to say about them. If for some reason SFNE does build one. I'm all for it.

But seeing how poor SF is right now.. I could see them just building a 200 foot cellphone tower :P

hahahahaha James!!! Is Six Flags REALLY doing THAT bad? They have tons of parks....millions of peole go to their many parks....so whats their problem? Did they over invest in something they shouldnt have invested in? Such as a coaster(s) that didnt increase any guest numbers?

Here's a snippet from an article on Six Flags. With stock prices hovering around the $1 / share mark (they dropped as low as $0.25 / share last week) they are not in good shape. They have been selling off entire parks to generate income and I don't think we've seen the last of that yet.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now here is the truly amazing thing that adds insult to injury...in spite of those prices, this company does not make money. In fact, they lost over $200 million in 2007, and that will definitely increase this year. Now, a lot of that loss can be attributed to debt, but even so, their recurring operating income was only $76 million in 2007.

The Company has over $2.4 billion of debt with revenues of $972 million in 2007. The market cap on the stock at $1 is only about $105 million, but with all that debt the Enterprise Value is about $2.5 billion.

It definitely looks like this company needs a balance sheet restructuring probably through a bankruptcy process. I am not sure how they can charge what they charge and still lose money. Maybe they should consider cutting back on the amount of rides and options to reduce costs and then reduce ticket prices to drive demand. They probably also need to shutter a couple of these parks since there are just too many of them.

Overall the industry looks broken and strained. Consumers just cannot afford a $200 to $300 day at an amusement park!

turkishtwistalltheway - August 3, 2008 03:04 PM (GMT)
zIn my opinion, I think the best thing for six flags is to sell off most of the parks, and start off againw ith 2-3. That way maitnance will be less, etc. Once the 3 parks or so are bringing in a good profet and all the problems are gone, six flags can build another park. And on and on it goes from there :)

mrceagle - August 3, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
you need to reread that article. The article in no way is talking about then planing to build a coaster. The article is talking about a change in policy that would allow SFNE to skip over the local zoning board proses on additions under 200ft. this would also only be allowed in a specific area of the park.

As for a dive machine don't count on it. They are extremely expensive. If any park were to get a ride like a dive machine it would be a park like SFGAdv, SFGAm, or SFMM. the park that already get very high attendance and can support such a costly investment. It is not practicality to invest 25+ million in a park that only get a little over a million a year and who's attendance is very unstable.

As for Down sizing they already have started that. all there parks have had rides removed, Prices decreased, and in park prices raised. Not to mention the out of hand in park advertising. The Company might sell off more parks but not down to only 2. you'll see then downsize some of the less important parks and those that are being looked at by other companies. Other companies are looking at SFNO and SFKK.

kpmcman - August 3, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
that would be so cool if they did do it and would really put sfne on the map

trainwreck - August 4, 2008 02:27 AM (GMT)
more than it already is?

mrceagle - August 4, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
SFNE is already on the map. The park has a good coaster line up. It's other aspects of the park that need to be worked on before they will ever be a top park.

Basically yes. They have a few Thrill rides left many don;t operate well or not at all. Their family ride selection is pitiful. Their kiddie ride selection repeats itself so much its pathetic.

It's right next to the entrance. So if your are being drawn in by the rides in the main midway you get pulled away from Thomas Town. It's basically next to the carousel.

kpmcman - August 5, 2008 09:51 PM (GMT)
oh thats funny

Again the height variance has nothing to do with a specific project. The height variance would simply allow SFNE to build up to 200 ft within a specific buffer zone of the park without having to go through the zoning board for a case by case variance. There is no specific plans to build a 200 ft anything.

if the variance goes though they could build a 200 ft cell tower if they chose. They would also need to build it within that zone. So that leaves little available space.

As for B&M loopers they are normally around 150ft. There are 2 Dive machines that are over 200ft. But both have very simple layouts. they are also in the 30 million range so far beyond what SFI is investing in a single property at this time.

kpmcman - August 6, 2008 05:14 PM (GMT)
but why b&m? I that just an idea?

mrceagle - August 6, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
I think it's a guess. Imtanin have only 3 styles of coasters available at this time over 200ft. the Hype's, Giga, and rocket coasters. Since they have no room for a rocket of giga coaster you need to look to other companies. Lives little to look at. Basically you have B&M(dive), Maurer Söhne's (x-car) and Vekoma's Giant Invertigo.

an invertigo is like deja vu, right? But what is an x-car?

yes an invertigo is like Deja Vue. An X-car is a short track coaster it's basically a large oval shaped set up with an inversion off the very top lift.at this time they are shorter then 200ft but the company has expressed interest in building on at or over.

kpmcman - August 9, 2008 12:49 AM (GMT)
it would be cool but way to short.

mrceagle - August 9, 2008 02:52 AM (GMT)
Short is about all SFNE has room for. Do you really thing the wild Mouse for Dark Night was all that long.

kpmcman - August 9, 2008 11:36 PM (GMT)
yeah it is small but that x coaster is only 400 something feet long.

The one I linked to is 492ft long. also they run it through like 3-4 times so it's more like 1,476 -1,968 ft long.

also keep in mind that the Parking lot and anything along the fence will not be able to build anything over 45 ft. The buffer zone is 60ft deep before they can consider building 200ft.

kpmcman - August 10, 2008 10:48 PM (GMT)
oh i didnt know they ran it multiple times.

what!?

mrceagle - August 14, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
i have to remember some of the posters on this site are Rug rats that won't know 80's mainstream comments. It's a statement from a bunch of public announcement shorts. They used the characters form the popular GI Joe TV show to teach viewers.

James - August 23, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
It was at an Question & Answer meeting 2 weeks ago from what I heard. I know 2 people who were at the event and both said the same thing. As for why its not on ScreamScape yet, maybe someone hasnt sent it in yet.

kpmcman - August 25, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
