Title: Construction Photo Report!
Description: New trees! New Fence?? House gone!
James - March 3, 2008 01:03 AM (GMT)
So I was able to go past the park about 2 weeks ago.. My cam has been acting up.. and the light wasnt so well... but crappy photos are better than none!
So lets see whats going on
First off.. I was able to get this photo that shows Corkscrew is indeed still YELLOW and not green/pink like the base of the first drop had been painted.

The orange flags are starting to look more and more yellow, maybe they should have taken them down for the winter?

Sky Wheels car bags...

House is gone!

New trees!

New trees...and a new wood fence?

LOTS of trees marked off (to be removed?)

Cone?

Ok.. and lastly.. I think the park is going to remove the old (ugly) chain link fence for a new steel fence.
Marker along the "old" fence

It goes all the way down the street

And stops where this newer steel fence is (at the parking lot entrance)

And one last photo.. of the new fence.

Thank you for the pictures.
Looks like some more mysterious constrcution or there making the parking lot bigger?
Also i like the new fence!
James - March 3, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I think its to make the parking lot bigger... So they wont have to bus people down from the mall when it fills up.
industrial kid - March 3, 2008 03:03 AM (GMT)
Yea same here but, do you think they would make room for a upcoming coaster maybe?
mrceagle - March 3, 2008 05:56 AM (GMT)
That is all expanded parking lot. they removed 2 houses and a 3 car garage. .
If I remember right. Kelly's Field will now be able to hold 300 cars and the adjoining property another 600 cars. It took a number fo town meetings for canobie to get approval.
James - The buses will still need to be used. I believe the report said up to 15 times. they will likely use both expanded parking lots up to 35 times.
industrial kid - March 3, 2008 08:05 PM (GMT)
Sweet! This is a dumb question to ask sorry but, can the public use this new addition parking lot?

The new parking lot will be used for guest parking but as MRCEAGLE stated before, Canobie is limited on how many times a year they may use it.
As for the marked trees in the picture... they were marked as trees NOT to remove as there were far more trees being taken out than were staying.
industrial kid - March 4, 2008 04:49 AM (GMT)
Thank you.
As for the parking thats good. UShually when i go there theres no spots left!
SoulessCorpse - March 4, 2008 05:07 PM (GMT)
They need to scrap the corkscrew, not waste money painting it.

Now why would the do something like that. The Corkscrew is in ok condition. The ride isn't even bumpy anymore. Changing the color would not be a waste of money. It would put a new touch on it. Last season was the first time in a long time the Corkscrew had one of the longest lines of all the rides. I think its coming back up.

Is this true? When I last rode it (2007 or 2006, I'm not sure) it was so rough and unenjoyable that I decided never to ride again. It was much worse than I ever remembered it in the past. If it really is smoother that's great news. Perhaps we'll have to see what 2008 brings for comfort and "ridability."
mrceagle - March 4, 2008 11:58 PM (GMT)
They will not remove the corkscrew until they are ready to replace it with a another coaster. one with more inversions. It also seem like they want to get the coaster count back up to were it was before that will happen. until them repainting it and keeping it looking fresh is the best move.
industrial kid - March 5, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
That is the stupidest idea to get rid of a high capacity roller coaster that is well known just because repainting is the problem. Honestly isn't it cheaper to just repaint it?
(by the way I know there not getting rid of it)

It was a lot more comfortable for the 2007 season. I was surprised. I also said that I wasn't going back on it because it was killing my head. But last season it wasn't rough anymore. A lot of people most have noticed it because the line was all the way down to the ground almost all season.

They Switched out trains last year. The freshly rehabbed train did run smother only having some shaking coming out of the corkscrews. mostly the second one.
Kid - The corkscrew isn't a high capacity ride. Since it operates with only one train The capacity is only half what it could be. I think it comes in around 500-600 pph.
SoulessCorpse - March 5, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
I just don't like riding it, to me it is boring and not thrilling let alone no where close to worth the wait. Same category as the boomerangs, i do not ride those anymore either for the same reason, and those are much better rides.

I agree completely. The coaster dosn't offer much and is a bit dated. I also skip it often if the lines seem long. I'll wait maybe 10-15 minutes but if it seems longer then that I wont bother.
In time it will be replaced. but they can't just opt to get a coaster like SFNE dose. they don't have the luxury of stealing money from another park. but then They could have got a medium small Coaster instead of Castaway Island.
industrial kid - March 6, 2008 01:28 AM (GMT)
I thought it was a high capacity because when ever i see it the lines huge.

A high Capacity ride is one that holds a lot of people.

Like Daisy was mentioning Capacity is a measure of how much a ride can handle. A low capacity ride with a moderate draw can look as popular as a higher capacity ride with a big draw. Frisbee for example can get 800pph and also had long lines close to an hour at times. so more people wee riding the frisbee then Corkscrew.

Agreed. A coaster would have made so many more poeple happy than the few people who do hang out at Castaway Island.

i don't mean to say castaway is a terrible addition but it's not enough.
So they are now put in a situation were they have to expand it into something larger. The attraction gets long lines of people waiting to get in. while that might not be too dissimilar to waiting for a ride I'm sure it's a bit more aggravating. they need to expand and invest money to make it into something larger then it is. that means more coasts to the park because life guards get paid more then ride attendants.

I have no facts to back this up, but in regard to the last few posts, my senses tell me that water attractions like Castaway Island draw more people, a wider range of ages, and more repeat customers than a coaster would for Canobie.
The popularity of Castaway Island can expanded in the adjacent space with other water attractions and without requiring a full scale water park. A Lazy River and a lagoon, such as The Cascades at Dollywood's Splash Country, would suit Canobie well and give them the extra capacity.

The water park organizations rate then on par with high end attractions like coaster. but at 2 million your only talking a family level coaster anyways so it's only really little kids that could use castaway that couldn't use the comparable coaster.
I agree with both those suggestions. but a few more slides would also be nice. that way people looking for slides won't just be in castaway.
turkishtwistalltheway - March 10, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
Well, i haveseen kids at the age of 5-6 riding the corkscrew! It is easy to get a coaster in similar size and height requierments, that would allow many people to ride! I definately know it is possible for canobie to get a lot of people on a copaster, of a wide variety....that is bigger than castaway island! Personally, i find castaway island to be in the " booneys" behind the corkscrew  They need a ride or two in the back near castaway island! Even better than that idea would be to take down castaway island and make a little area full of rides, like where the xtreme frisbee is! A few rides around a big patch of path! It would be a good addition! And, who knows, mabe one ride could be a water ride! I just wthink something like that should be done. I hope you know what i mean by the little area full of rides! If you dont...ask me to explain more

On the corner of the property by the employee entrance. there used to be a 2 story brown house. The park removed it to create more parking pace. They then removed a house and garage from the adjoining property to create an entirely new parking area.
turkishtwistalltheway - March 12, 2008 11:31 AM (GMT)
Yes, i always have a good chuckle at that house when i see it!

excuse me....chuckle LOL
not cuckle....typo....
freddy freemeal - March 15, 2008 03:18 AM (GMT)
Gotcha I knew what you meant. lol. The area does look alot cleaner without the house. I heard that one one the ways the park got the town to agree to the land clearing, was that the castmember parking area must be used for guests when this area is used. :) ....F.M.
