Title: Low Poly Sword
Description: Very simple...
r4zR - October 7, 2006 04:19 PM (GMT)
Ok, before anything: dark core...don't kill me...It's not my intention do copy you...I was looking at a game called the Dark Messiah (which is supposed to be mind blasting, I saw the trailer) and it is oriented in medieval times with a mix of fantasy aswell...So with swords bow and arrows and stuff and enchantments...and I like that stuff almost as much as I like a nice m-4 :D
Anyway... Still a W.I.P. (what a suprise huh  )
I did concentrate a bit too much on the photoshop part instead of the modeling part...But I kinda felt like fiddling with photoshop...so this is what I came up with:

Yeah... I wanted to make a basic framwork, then build unto it...

Looks fine to me. Good to see your still at it B)

Its a good start, but you should work a bit on the tip :army: .
r4zR - October 8, 2006 09:08 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it's too flat right?
I forgot to add another line before the tip starts so it could have some width...
I'll do that when I start texturing it
EDIT: my 400th post :music: , this is the first forum I reached this number, on others I'm usually at 100, 200..

Nothing wrong with wanting to model a sword. It's quite different than Dark's, so I dont see how he would mind. Plus that's the nice thing about having a forum and sharing your works. It keeps us all inspired, motivated and coming up with new ideas. :)
Anyways, the sword looks good and should be simple enough to texture. I think if anything, you could reduce the amount of polygons around the handle, considering how lowpoly the rest of the sword looks. I hope you'll have some updates with textures. :)
Congrats on the 400 post!

I finished unwrapping it...took like 10 minutes..now I have to watch the part 4 of your video tutorial to remember how to set up all the files again...cause I forgot the part about rendering your primitive texture to import into photoshop.. (kehlan)
I'll keep you guys updated :)
Kehlan - October 10, 2006 03:30 PM (GMT)
Cool! Once you do it a couple of times, it should be second nature. Looking foward to the updates. :)

Please do keep us updated...you a very busy person on here r4zR...keep it going
Kehlan - October 11, 2006 08:09 PM (GMT)
Yeah, don't come back unless you have it textured. Ok, just kidding. If you need any help, just give me a shout. ;)
r4zR - October 11, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
I tried doing the whole texture-rendering process but it came out wierd :S
I clicked on the same exact thing you clicked in the video, but it renders out a black background with the unwrapped uv wireframe...and when I load it up in photoshop and do: Selection -> Load Selection from that layer, I load Alpha 1 but it selects the edges (borders)...(which are really thick)
What did I do wrong?
Kehlan - October 11, 2006 10:30 PM (GMT)
hmmm...I'm not really sure. Are you saying that it looks like a wireframe after you render it out? Must be a setting somewhere. It's hard to say without looking at the file. You can always send me the file and so I can have a look. I'll check the settings in max and see what might cause that. ;)
Also, you didn't have the wireframe options turned on for rendering, did you? That might cause a problem.

Uhm don't know
You can download the scene here:

Ok, I'll have a look and see what results I get. Just reinstalled 3ds max 8 last night too, which is all working good now. :phew:
Kehlan - October 12, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
Well it's pretty much what I suspected. After opening your file I did a render and it rendered out as a wireframe. Make sure Force Wireframe is OFF and that should solve the problem. ;)

PRIMITIVE TEXTURE:

I know it looks like a 1990 b.c. looking texture...but it's a start
Kehlan - October 12, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
Ah cool, so I'm guessing that fixed the problem. The textures look good bud! I think it just needs a bit more detail in some areas. Maybe you can do the handle so it has a leather wrap around it. And maybe some more detail in the gold part like some carvings, but I like the code03 bit. :) Also, maybe a few scratches on the blade. Overall it's a good start and would look good in a game.
I'm glad you stuck at it. :)
pepper - October 12, 2006 07:49 PM (GMT)
You got the start there, now go scratch/dirty her up, also make a few part stand out more, metal is usualy very reflective, this looks like mat chrome(engrish?)
r4zR - October 12, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
I see...thanks for the suggestions...
But one question..I have no idea where to start in griming up a texture...do you guys like get pics and then adapt them to the texture or use them as references?
Never really textured anything before...I know it's necessary for the model to look good, otherwise it's too cartoonish..
pepper - October 12, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
Well, make a new layer and go over it with a dark brush, then sep opacity, you could experiment a bit with brushes and all.
Kehlan - October 12, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
Yeah, try out different things. You can use photos too if needed. For example, if you have a nice photo of some sheet metal that would work for the blade, you could always use that as a base and paint onto it. I quite like this site for free hirez textures. ;)
http://www.mayang.com/textures/index.htmTiny thumbnail example from the metals section on the site.
r4zR - October 12, 2006 08:38 PM (GMT)
I tried adding a leather texture to the grip and adding some lines to make the wrap effect...but it didn't come out very well...
On the code03 bit I tried using some filters to make it look more grainy
Then I got a pic from google and with a lot of transformation and adapting got that into the blade (so it has those designs on it)...
The I got an emerald pic and tried adapting it on the end of the sword...
Results:

Probably looked better before :(
pepper - October 12, 2006 08:42 PM (GMT)
YOu should try defining the lightning better, give the text a small bevel, and increase the contrast as a whole.
Learning to texture isnt easy and it really is a lot of miss/hit situations, just mess around would be my advice!
Kehlan - October 12, 2006 10:00 PM (GMT)
I like it R4zr. :) I think it's looking better and I quite like the new blade. If you can get an interesting design into the gold part like you did with the blade, it should look even nicer. The handle looks good but it just need more wraps in my opinion. And maybe make it a little bit darker.
Emarald looks good on it too.
Just keep working on it until it looks right and you're happy with it. :)

Thanks for the tips guys :)
I'll look into it
