Hello Everybody,

More exciting news this week! Two more eagles have fledged since our last update and I’m certain most of you already know. Early Monday morning, K24, the male triplet and “middle child” fledged, beating his older sister to it! Pete drove the camera for a while and finally found him perched on a hillside near the nest

He has been taking flights here and there but when he tries to get back on the nest, his sisters, mainly K27, are not OK with it! They are so funny to watch!

And she does it again!

The sisters, K27 and 5Z, had their scuffles on the nest here and there, especially when it comes to getting the food. The parents still seem to be struggling a little with the amount of food their triplets demand but they still deliver to the nest; very carefully though, or they get “attacked” by the hungry eaglets!
Poor parents!

And this morning, as I’m writing this report, K27 decided to take the plunge and venture off the nest!

I have also been keeping tabs on the already fledged eaglets from the Rattlesnake and Seal Rocks Nests.
The SR eaglets are the oldest on the island and always the first ones to take their first flight outside of their territories. On Monday, I spotted K21 flying clear over the rock quarry and the east end roads. I actually spotted it way before I even got to my trailhead; it flew closer to the truck, it checked me out and headed back down the canyon.

After I arrived to the observation blind I found K20 flying around as well and he came up a little higher to get his picture taken!

The RS chick, as usual, is harder to find because of all the tall trees in his area but I did get to spot him at last. Can you? It’s just a little black figure among the trees…

Ok, now through the scope
user posted image

The second time I visited RS, I found one of the adults perching near the nest and it was a while before I heard K22 begging for food
user posted image

Last week, I gave a tour and we decided to head out to the West End and try to spy on the West End chicks from literally miles away! This is the best we could do with our very powerful scope
user posted image

On our way to the WE, we made a quick stop at Two Harbors to look for the TH pair. Quickly we found them both perched on one of their favorite spots!

Lastly, I have an announcement to make; it’s a combination and good and not so good news so bear with me.
I have been fortunate to have been working with IWS on the Bald Eagle Restoration Project since February 2007, and while it has probably been the best job I’ve ever had, I’m sad to announce that this coming August 15th will be my last day of work. You see, I am currently on the second trimester of my pregnancy (I know!) and by then I will be too pregnant to perform most of the physical tasks that my job demands, and given that most of my work is fieldwork, I have to step down and have someone else continue to perform them. The months of August and September are prime months for intense hiking around on the island trying to find the youngsters that have left their nest territories and have started exploring the island on their own. Once some of the eagles have left the island (which they do around October), Pete would like to replaced all the 50lb batteries currently at the TH, WE, TR and RS nests, and refurbish much of the equipment as well. In the fall I will have my hands full with a little baby boy who is due “to hatch” on November 13th.
The first couple of weeks of August, I will be training Maria Dominguez, one of the biologists who has works on the Northern Islands and has assisted with banding on Catalina, both in the field and with Hydi and Pimu. She will take over on the 16th and I know she’s really excited and she will do a wonderful job!
I have enjoyed my time in this project so much, which is why it’s so hard for me to think about leaving. I have been able do to things I never thought I would get a chance to, like caring for day-old eagle chicks and becoming Pimu’s and Hydi’s best friend! I will not be leaving the island though, as my fiancée is the Senior Plant Biologist for the Catalina Island Conservancy, so I’ll be around and will continue to look up at the skies in search for those wonderful birds, only my backpack will have completely different contents belonging to a mom and not just an “eaglemom”!

Until next week,
Steffani

wavey.gif First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your own soon-to-be hatch1.gif news! I am TRUMPETING with joy for you! Secondly, I will miss your gifted presence on Catalina through which I've learned so much over these past seasons, but I am relieved to know that you'll remain on Catalina, near at hand for Maria and Pete and us visitors to appreciate, hug and enjoy! Finally, Seffani, I want to thank you for bringing the eagles closer to all of us each week through your stories, videos and pictures and for having the patience to endure all my questions, included the "worried eagle-mom" sorts of inquiries!! I can't wait to hug you and congratulate you myself at our Eagle Cam Addicts Lunch & Tour, July 7th and 8th! wub.gif

Steffani, Congratulations on your pregnancy and your baby boy!!! I will miss you more than I can say, but I'm so happy you're staying on the island. Maybe in the fall, we can get together for lunch or dinner.

I can't thank you enough for the great tours and meals with you, and your kindness and knowledge of your beloved eagles including your sweet Hydi & Pimu. I'm wishing you the best and sending love and joy your way.

Congratulations Stef! Your leaving is bitter sweet for all of us as well. There is no doubt, after watching the tender love and caring that you have shown these magnificent creatures, that your son will be a lucky young man to have you as his Mom!
