Have a great day no matter how you celebrate it ![]() Father's Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of Dad. It is a day to not only honor your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life - whether as Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, or "Big Brothers." Unbelievable as it may sound, it was as late as in the year 1966 that President Lyndon B Johnson made an official announcement designating the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. It was in the year 1972 that the third Sunday of June was made a national holiday in the US by President Richard Nixon. Though the US, the UK and Canada have followed the third Sunday of June pattern for celebrating Father's Day, different countries around the world have assigned different dates for Father's Day. Spain and Belgium celebrate Father's Day on the 19th of March every year. However, Germany commemorates the second or third Friday of May as Father's Day. For Romania the second Sunday of May is the Father's Day and for Sweden the second Sunday of November is the official Father's Day. Italy, on the other hand, celebrates Father's Day on March 19. South Korea celebrates the 8th of May as Parent's Day, which means that there is no particular day set aside for either Father's Day or Mother's Day there. Australia and New Zealand celebrate Father's Day on the first Sunday of September, whereas Brazil along with several other South American countries celebrate the day of fathers on the second Sunday of August. |

I believe we should celebrate Father's Day everyday. There are the biological types of fathers who to me are meaningless if not involved in our lives. I had one of those. But fortunately for me my Great Aunt who raised me found a wonderful man who loved me so unconditionally it was amazing as I look back now. Didn't know how to appreciate him when I was young and he died of a heart attack when I was 15 1/2. I can remember going in his closet and gathering up all his uniforms (he was a deputy sheriff in Los Angeles) just to be able to hold on to him. He had a full military funeral too. Back then it was a big deal like it is becoming now. I'm glad our military are being recognized again for the heroes they are. Even after over 60 years of not having him in my life I still love him deeply and cherish the small amount of time I was blessed by having him in my life.
Praline I know how you feel about your mom. However my "mom" did not treat me very well either. I was fortunate enough to have my Auntie for a Mom. I let go of "mom" a long time ago and surrounded myself with wonderful people who more than take her place. They are my mentors also. I cherish every one of them and my life is full of love. I'm not saying don't acknowledge her all I'm saying is you don't need her to fulfill your life.....only you can do that. Some people are just like that and no matter what you do they will always be like that. You are one smart cookie and have already figured all this out for yourself. It's ok to be who you are! |

Penny posted this last night and I just wanted to say DITTO
Pat that of you and Roy in front of the falls is really great, but your hotel room with the view is utterly fabulous. Wonderful you could watch Nik Wallenda's amazing walk while you were there too. i have the same little Maple foot beanie Chiquita and Sandie I was pooped after reading how much you both worked today Lala it must be very hard whenever an animal goes over the at Raptors especially if you have been involved in caring for it How is Summer's foot doing now? I hope you'll treat us to a pic of your Mom on her special 96 is a BIG Deal Nice story about 'Garth" Regan. I guess this means you'll be seeing him quite a lot now that he is at the SB Zoo Karen Jossy looks so sweet with her doll...is that an American Girl? Bubba reminded me of Buddy Holly in his heavy-rimmed glasses Did you know that horn rimmed glasses are the 'New Cool'. If Johnny Depp wears them they are definitely not 'nerdy' anymore Marsha I need to learn all about Snag It too so I could do some videos. |
