Dr. Sharpe - when you band and tag an eagle - how do you determine who gets what?
For banding, do you place the silver federal band on a certain leg to indicate sex, and if so, is it the same for all the eagles on the Channel Islands? I see K47, K01 and this year's WE #3 all have the same R/orange, L/silver configuration. And for tagging - how do you determine which eaglet in a nest gets which number? I am thinking it's the first (ie lowest) number goes to the presumed oldest chick but I can't remember! Thank you! |

I put the silver band on the right leg if I think it is a male and the left leg if I think it is a female. We can't know for sure until the blood work comes back, so it is just a guess. I stopped using the orange bands in 2004 because they are almost useless in determining who is who when the wing markers break off.
Sometimes the oldest bird gets the lowest tag number, sometimes it is just the bird I pull out first. |

Follow up question based on your answer: On the WE nest you put the lower number on the last chick you tagged, not the first (or rather second but I'm not counting Metoo). Does this indicate that K24 is the older one in this nest and that K27 is the Mid-Sib?

It sounds kind of like the doctor puts the tag he grabs first on whatever bird he happens to be working on and doesn't pay much mind to the numbers, just as long as they get tagged with something!
