PLEASE READ
There are now TWO eggs on the TH nest. The adults will be taking turns incubating them .. and normally during this time, or at a switch, the eggs will also be rolled .. this is to prevent the developing embryos/chicks from sticking to the inside of their shells. Whilst the IWS is interested in the above information, and would be especially interested in knowing if an adult leaves the nest and the eggs are uncovered for awhile .. Dr Sharpe has indicated in the past, that he also wants us to simply enjoy the experience of watching all the happenings on the nests ... and learn more about these magnificent birds ... through the wonder of the Nest Cams. Therefore .. please continue to post observations in the usual way .. but should you observe a parent switch .. or notice that the adult is not on the nest .. it would be helpful to all of us .. if the time/s could also be noted/posted .. along with whatever-else you observe happening on the nest at that time. Times of events/changes on a nest are a great help to those of us who video .. when we are editing the footage. Just a few Gentle Reminders about posting on this thread. ( Helps to save time when reading through it). Please remember that it is the CHANNEL ISLANDS NESTS ONLY ... either on or off camera ... that we post our observations/comments about. There are THREE nests with cameras online .. so it is important to know WHICH NEST you are observing. Please put the Initials at the start of your post ... . . . ♦ PH = Pelican Harbor #1 (WMP) - http://media1.vcoe.org/eaglecam1 . . . ♦ PH = Pelican Harbor #2 (embedded) - http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/pelicanharborcam.htm . . . ♦ TH = Two Harbors - http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/twoharborscam.html . . . ♦ WE = West End - http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/westendcam.html These nests are all in California ... so it's Pacific Time ... on this coast. We prefer that the Quote Button is not used on this thread ... and if you must use it ... because you are referring to something on a previous page ... then take TEXT only ... never captures or video. Thanks! Happy Nest Watching! |

Eaglepedia Revisited - February 28, 2008
What is an Egg? * albumen is: --------90% water & 10% protein --------the embryo's water supply, but also serves as a 'shock-absorber' to help protect the embryo --------buffers embryo from sudden changes in temperature * shell membranes are: --------attached to the shell are two membranes, the inner and outer shell membranes. They protect the egg from bacterial invasion and help prevent rapid evaporation of moisture from the egg. * shell: --------protects the embryo --------contains thousands of pores (see diagram below) that permit gas exchange --------generally white in cavity-nesters & colored and patterned in open nesters (for camouflage) --------color is added to the eggshell from pigments secreted by cells in the wall of the uterus http://people.eku.edu/ritchisong/avianreproduction.html ![]() Keratin fibers from the outer shell membrane can be seen above, attached to the calcium carbonate crystals that make up the main shell structure. (keratin is like our fingernails) ![]() Thousands of tiny pores like the one pictured above, cover the shell, providing a passage for gas exchange. ![]() ![]() ![]() Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |

My screen is very wavy, but I'm quite sure there's at least one eagle there. |

WE - First sighting of an eagle,
must have been sleeping on the nest overnight. Therefore, must be Wray - second night in a row. Will we have a surprise this morning? Time will tell - when K-01 flies in and we observe their behavior. Can't wait, can't wait ![]() Oops - see Jeanne just posted that an eagle flew in. So, I guess it (ID TBD) wasn't there overnight.
