PLEASE READ
There is now an egg on the TH nest. So the adults will be taking turns incubating it .. and normally during this time, or at a switch, the egg will also be rolled .. this is to prevent the developing embryo/chick from sticking to the inside of the shell. Whilst the IWS is interested in the above information, and would be especially interested in knowing if an adult leaves the nest and the egg/s are uncovered for awhile .. Dr Sharpe has indicated in the past, that he also wants us to simply enjoy the experience of watching all the happenings on the nests ... and learn more about these magnificent birds ... through the wonder of the Nest Cams. Therefore .. please continue to post observations in the usual way .. but should you observe a parent switch .. or notice that the adult is not on the nest .. it would be helpful to all of us .. if the time/s could also be noted/posted .. along with whatever-else you observe happening on the nest at that time. Times of events/changes on a nest are a great help to those of us who video .. when we are editing the footage. Just a few Gentle Reminders about posting on this thread. ( Helps to save time when reading through it). Please remember that it is the CHANNEL ISLANDS NESTS ONLY ... either on or off camera ... that we post our observations/comments about. There are .. normally .. THREE nests with cameras online .. so it is important to know WHICH NEST you are observing. Please put the Initials at the start of your post ... . . . ♦ PH = Pelican Harbor #1 (WMP) - http://media1.vcoe.org/eaglecam1 . . . ♦ PH = Pelican Harbor #2 (embedded) - http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/pelicanharborcam.htm . . . ♦ TH = Two Harbors - http://www.iws.org/bald_eagles/twoharborscam.html . . . ♦ WE = West End - Temporarily off air These nests are all in California ... so it's Pacific Time ... on this coast. We prefer that the Quote Button is not used on this thread ... and if you must use it ... because you are referring to something on a previous page ... then take TEXT only ... never captures or video. Thanks! Happy Nest Watching! |

Eaglepedia Revisited - January 3, 2007
Some bald eagles will breed at four years of age but generally breeding begins at five. Nesting territories are usually adjacent to water (lakes, rivers, seashores) with the nest being built in the tallest tree for easy approach and viewing of the surrounding area. Where there are no trees, any high rock outcropping or hill will do just fine! A clutch will consist of 2 sometimes 3 eggs. Siblicide is well known among bald eagles with the smaller eaglet disappearing between the third and eighth week. Survival of both young at a nest appears to depend on the ability of the parents to provide food. The parents will share in the incubation, turning the eggs frequently so that the embryo does not stick to the shell and both will develop a brood patch, the bare spot on the stomach to allow the heat of their skin to keep the eggs and chicks warm. One study showed that the female was responsible for 72% of the incubation. Eagles sit on their eggs most of the time--one study showed that the eggs were incubated 98% of the time! However if the weather is quite warm with little wind, the parents will be off the eggs for brief periods of time, sometimes covering them with nesting materials. Scientists don't know for sure whether they do this to keep the eggs warm or to hide the eggs so predators don't steal them. Eagles have VERY sharp claws on their powerful talons. When the parent moves about the nest, it often clenches its talons so the sharp claws can't hurt the eggs or babies by accident. The parents are also very careful to step around the eggs to avoid crushing them. http://www2.ucsc.edu/scpbrg/bald.htm This is not our cruzer but thought the progression an interesting reference: ![]() ![]() Visit Eaglepedia DISCLAIMER: Information here has been gathered in good faith from the internet and cannot be guaranteed to be totally accurate. |
