Well, last week we had the first chicks to hatch naturally on Catalina in over 50 years fledge at the Pinnacle Rock nest. Now the rest of the eaglets are following in their path. I went out to the West End nest on Monday and found that two of the three eaglets had fledged (K-72 and K-73). K-74 is still in the nest, but should fledge any day now.

While I was at the West End, Steffani went to check on the Twin Rocks eagles. They have also fledged.

We are keeping our eyes on the Two Harbors and Seal Rocks eaglets and they should fledge by next week. The Two Harbors eaglets are walking out of the nest and along the ridge, but we don't think they have taken their first flight yet.

While talking to a local fisherman this week, he reported that while boating past Seal Rocks he saw one of the adult eagles struggling in the water. He approached and saw that K-25 (the male) was hooked in the foot and dragging fishing line, unable to fly. The fisherman got another boat to come over and help him remove the hook. The bird swam to shore afterwards and got up on the cliff. I went out on Sunday and saw both adults soaring and then got the following video, which shows the male eating in the nest while the eaglets stand around.

Hopefully by the next update we will have seen all 11 eaglets take flight. We'll try to get some good photos/video as they start roaming further from their nests.

Until next week.

Do we have the name and address of the fisherman so we can bombard his mailbox with thank you notes?

Thanks Peter/Dr. Sharpe for this wonderful update report accompanied by videos - it's great to be able to see beyond the scope of the cam for the WE eaglets and the other nests which don't have cam. So happy so many eaglets were born healthy and are now able to fledge and continue to populate the world with more eagles.

I'm so glad we all came together to buy that video camera! What great things Peter has been able to post for us to see! Camera_Bug.gif

Congrats to the Pinnacle Chicks - finally the tide turns ...... hats off to you who helped make it possible!

That WE nest looks mighty small for 6 eagles! So glad to hear that all the fledging to date have been successful. Can you imagine 11 new eagles soaring overhead at Catalina! eagle.gif thumbUp.gif

A special thanks to those who reached out and helped 25! eagle.gif As always great info and looking forward to the next update which unfortunately will confirm more chicks leaving "home" crying.gif crying.gif but it's what we have been waiting these several months to see! Chick3.gif Thank you Peter/Steffani/IWS!!

Xfingers.gif Thank goodness the fishermen helped our dad! I'm trying to picture how an eagle would swim to shore?? Orngfish.gif eagle.gif

Apparently, today is the day that the Bald Eagle is going to be officially taken off of the endangered species list. Thankfully, K-25 was saved by concerned individuals...I hope and pray that the Bald Eagle continues to thrive and that there are many more concerned individuals out there to make sure of it! A little help goes a long way, right??? Xfingers.gif EagleGuy.gif eagle.gif Chick3.gif Steff.gif Xfingers.gif

When I click on the videos, I am sent to the Photobucket website instead of Peter's video. Why is that?

Last night I also watched the videos ... however Eagle Guy must have edited his post to edit something .... probably the K numbers of the WE eaglets .... once you go back and edit a post that has Photobucket videos in it that screws up the codes .... Jann and I have found that out to our cost over in AEATT ....

I will e-mail Dr Sharpe and ask him to repost the videos.

Thanks for the videos, Dr. S. The West End one gave me a nice perspective of the scope of the terrain there. Wow. And the Seal Rocks one was great too.

And a special thanks to Robert for making them available to us!
