Hey All,
Pete and I were out at the nest site today, getting ready for tomorrow's big banding event. We have the camera working nicely, and worked out a way to get some live video of the work we'll be doing under the nest tree. Unfortunately, we returned home this evening to find out the webcam had been off all day. Hopefully NinjaSherpa is aware of the problem, and will have the camera up and running first thing tomorrow. The banding should start around 12:30. Jim Spickler (tree climber) is coming out on the 8am IPCO boat, so we should be arriving at the nest shortly after noon. We'll be doing some last minute adjustments to the camera, so you'll know we're there when you see the camera move. As for the Santa Cruz birds, most of our birds have moved to Anacapa island (including A-49, with only a handful here still on Cruz and a couple on Rosa. Now that nesting season is winding down, we're going to start concentrating on trapping a few of our birds to collect blood and feather samples that will be tested for DDT and PCBs. Now that all our birds have been in the wild for at least a year, feeding on a variety of food sources (fish, birds, marine mammal, deer and elk carrion), they've had time to accumulate measurable levels of these contaminants. By trapping birds of all different ages, we will get a good idea of how these chemicals accumulate over the life of the bird. We're expecting the numbers to be relatively low, considering we've already had 2 successful breeding pairs, and Catalina is starting starting to show signs of recovery. Anyhow, that's all I have for now. We'll post a Post-Banding summary tomorrow night. Talk to you then. Dave |

I've been so disappointed in that problematic cam...it was off all Memorial Day weekend and a lot of other times; now that an important event is coming up, it's still not working. Everyone keep their fingers crossed. If it's not working, I know IWS will take some videos for us.

Thanks Dave for both the update ... about the eagles' movements around the Islands ... but also about what is happening tomorrow and for all your hard work with the Camera.
It will be great to see Foxglove/Jim again .... exactly one year ago today we watched as he climbed the tree to 'bag' our beloved Cruz ... and wave to all of us watching him sitting on the nest ... and we waved back! |

Karen the problem seems to be with the mainland connection ... or not in this case! Today it was Buffering but nothing was happening! This is what Dr Sharpe posted over in Nest Watch ... which I copied over to Chat

I posted somewhere on this forum (forget where now), that Jim was featured in the March issue of National Geographic, measuring the biggest redwood tree, called Hyperion. I'd love to see Foxglove band our Eagle, maybe it will get in Nat'l Geo....

Have you been getting audio from the SC nest? (AFAIK, there is no feed at all.) EDIT: Oh, sorry, I guess you mean "since we have sound, if the system is working". This post has been edited by r.e.s. on Jun 7 2007, 10:01 PM |
