![]() I can't even voice my sadness right now but wanted to give us a place for him. Bird, call me hunny if you need anything (808-383-5147). If I had your number, I'd be there now. |

I copied this from the weekly update
QUOTE (Bird @ Oct 11 2006, 07:57 PM) Go ahead and tell me, Dr. Sharpe. Did 61 not make it? I don't see him on your list, and he hasn't been mentioned in a long time. He's been my underdog(bird) because of his broken leg, and I have special tugs on my heart for him. The last I heard, you were getting weak signals from his transmitter from San Miguel (Anacapa?). Is he gone? We had been holding out hope for A-61, which had flown over to Anacapa and then we lost its GPS signal. Well, we were able to finally get to Anacapa today (about a 1 1/2 hour trip in an 18' Zodiac) and unfortunately found A-61's carcass in the bottom of a ravine. There is no way to tell what happened. The red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons seem especially aggressive out there, so there could have been a confrontation with one of them, or with one of the other eagles that was out there at the time. Very sad, but at least now we know. |

Hula/Debi, I think this thread is a very sweet gesture. I know I can't take my mind off the sad news right now and it feels a little better having this thread to talk to you guys about it. Thank you.

I too am feeling very sad about A-61 right now. Bird, and everyone, I went back and found this photo, that Chris took and Dave posted, on August 9th's update. If it is too upsetting for you I will remove this post.

There are probably a number of us who checked in on A-61 early on and got quite a shock and a terrible sinking feeling when the baby was not where it was supposed to be only to discover that somehow its leg had been broken and had to be tended to. And then to follow A-61 through rehab and then to Santa Cruz where a successful fledging took place was a thrill. I know how bereft I am feeling and can only imagine how devastated the crew must be.
Hula I love your very traditional St. Francis and thank you, Cumbrian, for posting A-61's picture in memorium. I think a group mantle is in order here... |

It is definitely sad to hear about what happened to poor A61. If folks are looking for something positive to think about, perhaps reflect on the fact that at least A61 had the chance to fly free and soar for a brief time. So many in the wild don't even make it that far.
Sadly, this type of outcome has to be the result for some in the course of nature, just as some of the prey animals that our eagles catch can't make it. It's tough to see the result sometimes but at least A61 lived as he was meant to for the time he had. |
