Hi everybody,
The chicks are on the move! This week, many of the young eagles have taken trips outside of their territories and the chasing-chicks-around-the-island game has begun! On Thursday, I surveyed the Seal Rocks area and after a while I spotted K07, Karis, flying together with one of the SR adults. K08, Scout, was not in the area. After a little while, I spotted another juvenile flying along with K07 but it wasn’t K08. I scanned through the frequencies and, to my surprise, it was K12, Aahana! It’s just about a month since she fledged so she’s right on schedule; she sure ventured as far as she could on her first trip away from home. Later that afternoon I picked up the signal from K08, Scout, coming from the Palisades on the back side of the island. I made a video of these sightings ![]() On Friday, I took a kayak out and headed for the Rattlesnake territory. As soon as I entered their territory I spotted K80 and K47 perched really closed to each other; they were both keeping an eye on the fishing boat next to us that was giving out “hand-outs”. See them? ![]() How about now? ![]() Pretty soon I started hearing one of the chicks vocalize. It was K15, Ho’ihoulala. ![]() Closer ![]() ![]() As son as one of the parents took off the perch, K15 went right after it. a little farther west into their territory I spotted K19 very briefly. ![]() On Monday, I went to the SR area again and neither on of the SR birds were there, only K12. I didn’t get a change to photograph her this time but she went from the SR canyon to the quarry so she’s enjoying her time out there. I searched the east end, the Empire Landing area and parts of the south of the island but didn’t find the SR chicks. ![]() After I got back home, I scanned the Nest Observations and noticed that there had been a third juvenile flying around the West End nest but I don’t think it was K12. I had just spotted her on the east end of the island so if I had to take a guess, I’d say it was one of the SR chicks or K18 from Two Harbors! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alCKMWjyoRc West End brothers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvI51Cr8Wpk Here’s the TH chick, K18, Solitaire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KlOReHejV4 Cont… |

Yesterday, I headed to the West End to see who I could find. I waited in the area for a while and the only ones in the area were K13, Alerio, and K14, Prince Harry, which we already knew since they have been returning to the nest every day.
On my way to the WE it sprinkled on several spots, it was quite refreshing since we’ve had very hot days lately. ![]() I also found Wray ![]() ![]() Sunny day at the West End All 8 chicks’ radios have registered on at least one of our towers so we know they are moving around, it’s just nicer to see it with our own eyes. Radiotracking has its perks. I may not always find what I need to see but at the end of the day, the island gives you this… ![]() Spectacular! ![]() A few weeks ago, we were nominated for the Rare Life Honor. You can vote once every 24 hours, so if you are inclined to do so, please visit http://www.eaglerarelife.com/content/drpeter-sharpe Until next week, Steffani |

STEFFANI--Beautiful Island views! So glad you have gotten readings on all the Catalina Chicks and very exciting that K12 discovered her cousins up near the EastEnd! K18 maybe visited WE too and discovered she is not alone out there either. |
