I was wondering what the eaglets smell like when you and Steffani hold them for banding and blood work?
I have 3 pet cockatiels, and they smell like maple syrup/brown sugar. |

Well, I stuck very close to the eaglet's crates when they were in Ventura before boarding the boat to be taken back to Santa Cruz a few years back....and....they didn't smell too swift.
Kind of --- but, of course, I have a keen sense of smell. I hope that was a part of it? I love the smell of Umbrella cockatoos...really nice and even their breath smells ok, thought it is sort of strong if you're smootching on them. Sorry to report that I would NOT want to smootch on a young eaglet from what I have smelled. And that was beside the crate, not in with them. Amazon parrots smell real strong to me, too strong, and I'm afriad of them and don't really get close. Bigger Asian parakeets have a very strong smell...I have those...but they don't smell I think you'll want to stick to sniffing psittacines no matter how much you love the eagles and their eaglets. |

True Patti, the K64 in his crate was kinda 'stinky'. Maybe it was because PS in the crate too. I dunno.

Yea, Vicki, was just thinking it could have been poop since I was scaping the stuff here before I read your question. Don't know why I never thought of that before. I assumed it was the eaglet scent, but I don't know what was sitting along with it in the crate.
First a.m. African grey "broccoli dinner" poop is even worse than what I smelled in Ventura, if that was poop in the crate. Broccoli poop really is worse than the eaglet crate. I apologize for the bad rap. |

Some smell a little like fish or dead meat, but for the most part they don't smell much.

Thanks Peter, good luck with all these chicks and their banding day. Silly question, but I've always wondered and since you're up close and personal with them, you would be the one to know.
