Howdy eagle enthusiasts! Another beautifully hot day is coming to an end here on Santa Cruz Island. With fairly calm seas lately, we’ve had the opportunity to use our small boat for eagle observations, taking us to those hard-to-get-to locations around the islands. And off course, we went and visited the north side and A-49. When we arrived at around noon today, we were happy to see one of the adults perched next to the nest. Upon closer investigation, I found A-49 about 30 meters south of the nest, shading itself in a low tree and vocalizing often, sounding similar to a western gull vocalization. Shortly thereafter, A-49 flew down the canyon and then looped back around and perched on the top of a tree next to the nesting tree and the adult. It was a short flight but enough to show me that the chick was growing up to be strong and healthy. A-49 continued to vocalize often to the adult, probably indicating an empty stomach. I was able to snap a quick picture of the family members before I departed the canyon.

While on our boat yesterday, I was able to snap this picture of A-55 perched in its favorite spot in Prisoners Harbor. A-55 was one of a dozen chicks released on Santa Cruz Island within the last month. A-55 has adapted well to the gorgeous island environment, making Prisoners Harbor it preferred hangout spot for the time being.

Great update, thanks Chris. Your picture gives great perspective of the area around the tree.

Also, thanks for the intro to A55.

Thank you, Chris, for the update. It sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day! The blue tags on #49 really stand out, don't you think? The picture gives an excellent and different view of the nest area. He was so close to camera range! Finally he's decided to come in to view in the last few hours. I liked your photo of #55 also. It reminds me of two eagles I saw sitting on a rock by a shoreline similar to this photo. The spot was along the Inside Passage in a wilderness area. They certainly look regal no matter where they perch!

Thanks, Chris! Your photo is quite helpful and makes sense how 49 came onto the nest from the left even though Mom had been looking out to the right all day. Thanks for the update and the photos...wonderful to see them from a different angle and perspective.
