CHIL EagleCAM > Class of 2009 > Pelican Harbor Eagle's Nest 2008/2009

Posted by: Cumbrian Sep 8 2008, 08:48 AM
All Eagles All The Time 2008/2009 is an Archival/History in Videos and Still captures showing the various stages throughout the year in the lives of the Eagles on the Pelican Harbor Nest on Santa Cruz Island.

http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/37995/2813310000098606419S425x425Q85.jpg
This is the PH Nest - camera zoomed out.

Season 2007/2008 was a successful one for this nest in that 2 eggs were laid and both successfully hatched ... but then on May 19th, 2008 both chicks were attacked on the nest by a sub-adult and life was never the same again, this season, for the parents and the chicks.

You can review last season's events from 'Nestorations to Fledging' by checking out the http://z7.invisionfree.com/CHIL_EagleCAM/index.php?showforum=20

Currently the camera is not operational on this nest. We hope that technicians will be able to go out to the Island very soon to repair it.

Camera fixed October 2/08 ... capture courtesy of hedi http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/HEYDI/eagle%20two/screen-capture-18-15.png

We assume that the adult eagles K-10 and K-26 are currently enjoying some R & R ... but before long we hope to see them once again at their nest ... bringing sticks and fluff ... to start the Restorations ... aka Nestorations by the A-49 Cruzers.

Last year they visited the nest occasionally in late September/early October and again in November and December but it wasn’t until January that they really got into full nestoration mode ready for the eggs that were laid earlier than in past years .. in late February

The Videos and Stills ... that will eventually be posted here on this thread ... have been selected ... as their favourites ... by the members who have captured them on Nest Watch.
You can see more videos and still pictures ... at a later date ... by visiting the Daily Observations thread. Also known as Nest Watch

We ask you NOT to post comments in this thread. VIEWING ONLY PLEASE! This will enable faster viewing by Dr. Peter Sharpe and the IWS Team ... for record purposes .... and also for Members and visitors to the forum.

K-10 & K-26 ARE BACK & BRINGING IN SOME STICKS!

October 10, 2008

The nestorations have started with many fly-ins and fly-outs. Sticks were delivered, moved around
the nest and of course Mom K26 gave Dad K10 the "eye" and the "beak" as where to place them.

December 1, 2008

As if someone flicked a switch, the PH pair suddenly got busy with multiple round trips--bringing in the sticks and working on nestorations. The pair was on the nest at sun-up, and work continued until one eagle flew away at 08:24--the other followed around 08:31am.

Just a few of many fly-ins and outs:

EARLY ARRIVALS!

January 18, 2009

Pelican Harbor 7:20 to 7:32 am
K-10 arrives followed shortly afterwards by K-26. They work on the nest bowl together; a bit of beaking going on.

user posted image user posted image

K-10 flew off and returned with a long, curly stick. He was having difficulty with the stick, so K-26 took over after a bit and placed it near the front left edge. Girl power! smile.gif

user posted image user posted image

7:36 to 7:55 am Some beaking and what looked like cuddling. smile.gif

user posted image user posted image

more beaking; K-10 and K-26 seem to be doing their nestorations in marathon sessions .... work like crazy one day, then take a few days off, then back to work for one day, and so on. The other two pairs seem to be at their nests more often. Of course, we may not be seeing everything at PH, either.

user posted image

8:24 to 8:41 am; K-26 makes sure that K-10 is placing the stick correctly. She watches him intently.

BLUE-BLINGED INTRUDER UPSETS K-10 & K-26!

January 19, 2009

K10 arrives peacefully at the nest, arranges a stick. 7:11 am

user posted image user posted image

Suddenly a blue-blinged eagle swoops in above the nest. K10 goes into defensive mode, lots of screeching.

user posted image user posted image

The intruder flew in front of the nest (no picture), then K10 took off after it, more screeching.

user posted image user posted image

K26 arrives at the nest, screeching, K10 flies in with a fish for her. Not sure how he caught a fish in that short time ......
There's more to the story that we will never know.

user posted image user posted image

K26 gulps down the silver fish. Eagles stop screeching but they took off in a flash shortly after this.

WE HAVE GREAT EGG -SPECTATIONS!

February 19, 2009

Both eagles were on the nest when the cam came on. They both flew off and it did sound like some wub.gif could have been happening offscreen. Both returned to the nest, K10 flew off and returned with a branch that looked like it had pine needles on it (preparing for an egg??). 6:15 to 6:28 am

K10 returned to the nest with some more fluff. This fluff had more of a green shade to it.
He left and returned with a curly stick. 7:02 to 7:09 am
