Description: Foggy in RI
amethyst - March 14, 2012 12:32 PM (GMT)
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!!!!!
Wishing all a great mid-work-week day......
LBtheScot - March 14, 2012 12:35 PM (GMT)
I just heard that an Indian tribe in Wyoming is going to be allowed to kill a certain number of bald eagles!!
I am shocked and horrified after all the hard work that has gone into keeping these majestic birds alive.
There must be something that can be done.
lakemaryeaglewatcher - March 14, 2012 12:37 PM (GMT)
Good morning. Can't believe I'm the first one this morning. Will be leaving shortly for the job site. More insulation today. Am getting pretty good at it. :D
Went for a walk at 6:30 this morning. Foggy and wet. :o Hard to get used to the humidity. The birds were singing away so that part was enjoyable.
Off to work. Hope everyone has a good day. :}^

How did this one tribe get permission to do this when everybody else has to get their feathers from the National Eagle Repository in CO? This is outrageous :hair:  You can just see this decision opening the floodgates for more of the same from all over the country and you know that 'religious purposes' is a sham...it's probably really for dance costumes so people can win big $$$ at Pow Wows  :hair:
I wonder if there is a place to vent opposition to this  decision by the US Fish and Wildlife Service

Oh, I SO agree with this! A quote from the MSNBC story:
"I've not heard of a take permit for a bald eagle," Steve Moore, lawyer with the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, Colo., said Tuesday.
"I see it and NARF would see it as a legitimate expression of sovereignty by the tribe, and respect for that sovereignty by the Fish and Wildlife Service," he added.
Hopefully I won't offend anyone here, but so many Native American tribes play the sovereignty card when it is convenient for them - often when someone has done or wants to do something that is illegal by US standards - but they sure aren't sovereign when it comes to holding their hands out for federal funds or other things they want from the US government.

GOOD MORNING EAGLE FRIENDS. IT'S HARD TO BE CHEERFUL WITH NEWS LIKE THAT ABOUT THE NATIVE TRIBE BEING ALLOWED TO KILL 2 BALD EAGLES.
IT'S IRONIC, BECAUSE I THOUGHT NATIVE PEOPLES APPRECIATED WILDLIFE MORE THAN THIS!!!!!!!!!
I LEARNED BACK WHEN I WENT TO THE INTERVIEW ON THE INDIAN RESERVATION, THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SAME FEDERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS AS OTHER INSTITUTIONS. LINDA, YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!!!

Lala this is what I've just posted in the comments section of that story. We need to start a petition!!
"This is just unbelieveable!!! The Gov't protects Bald Eagles and now they give permission for one tribe to 'take' 2???? How many other tribes are going to jump on the bandwagon after the floodgates are opened? Every year many eagles end up in rehab after being shot and maimed to the point where they can never again be released into the wild. Only 50% of young eaglets ever make it to maturity as it is. If people are 'allowed' to run around shooting at eagles to get the two they need, how can it even be allowed to occur?
The bald eagles are currently laying eggs in many nests around the country. Some of them already have hatchlings in their nests. If an adult from a nesting pair is killed, then the likelihood is their eaglet(s) will not survive to fledging. This decision is the worst thing I have ever heard made by the people who are supposed to be the overseers of a National symbol and protected species. If this is how they conduct business as usual their mandate should be removed and they should be replaced by an agency that has the welfare of the birds and animals at their forefront.
I also have a huge issue with the 'religious purposes' excuse because it seems many tribes have 'adopted' this custom and need the feathers for powwow dance costumes, which was not at all a tradition of early Indian tribes in the US and Canada.
Where do I sign a petition against this decision?"
SoCal Lady - March 14, 2012 03:18 PM (GMT)
FROM THE ARTICLE:
Wyoming tribe gets rare permit to kill bald eagles
The agency's decision comes after the Northern Arapaho Tribe in Wyoming filed a federal lawsuit last year contending the refusal to issue such permits violates tribal members' religious freedom. Although thousands of American Indians apply for eagle feathers and carcasses from a federal repository, permits allowing the killing of bald eagles are exceedingly rare, according to both tribal and legal experts on the matter.
IMHO....
U.S. Fish and Wildlife are COWARDS! Instead of fighting this in the Courts--they just bow down....this is SO WRONG!!!
I agree with IMORTON/LINDA:
"Hopefully I won't offend anyone here, but so many Native American tribes play the sovereignty card when it is convenient for them - often when someone has done or wants to do something that is illegal by US standards - but they sure aren't sovereign when it comes to holding their hands out for federal funds or other things they want from the US government."
LINDA- You certainly do not offend me!
JEANNE--THANK YOU FOR THE CONTACTS!!!

I have to get moving, but I will be using JEANNE'S contacts, later this morning. U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE INFURIATE ME JUST AS MUCH AS THIS TRIBE!!
I am just sickened by this ....I just went back to my newspaper and saw the article in our paper too.

Artsy Mom - March 14, 2012 03:47 PM (GMT)
Jeanne I just sent slightly altered versions of my comments to both Senators and to the Mountain Prairie region of the FWS who made that ridiculous decision. I had to fudge on the forms because of course they had zip codes and States as required fields. I put in North Dakota because they are the closest but used our former California zip code because I knew it...and it worked :D
I added this to them:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46729054/#.T2C1axybFwc
"This story about the USFWS making a decision to allow the killing of Bald Eagles was posted today. As a member of the IWS Bald Eagle restoration program on the Channel Islands in California, this decision came as a total blindside to the sensibilities of all the people working to establish successful breeding pairs of bald eagles as they rebound from near extinction.
Please prevent this terrible decision to allow open season on bald eagles. Just because they were removed from the endangered list does not mean they need to become a hunted species. They need to be protected, not persecuted."
Anybody want to start a petition? Maybe on FB?
quiltingal1 - March 14, 2012 03:52 PM (GMT)
I don't understand why this tribe can't get what they need from the federal repository in Colorado.

This contact info was posted over at the Eagles Cam Addicts FB page:
If you are upset about the Northern Arapaho Nation tribe receiving a permit to kill two bald eagles, you can express your displeasure by calling Donovan Antelope, the tribes PR officer. (307) 332- 6120 or (307) 856-3461
Artsy Mom - March 14, 2012 04:58 PM (GMT)
Linda I don't believe that harrassing ;<> calls to a single person are going to help anything.
Too easy to leave the phone off the hook :P
Any member of a tribe that took the FWS to court over their sovereign rights is not going to bow to pressure from phone calls JMHO
