Good morning everyone!
Hope that someone recognizes these birds that I am going to post pictures of. Looking at them from upstairs, I thought they were the Redwing Blackbirds who have been hanging around since Nov/Dec. However, I took some photos, zoomed in :8O: and it is a NEW bird that I have never seen before! (I wondered - as they are much more friendly) Some are all tan - maybe the female or a juvie?

Morning!!
wrightflyer - February 27, 2012 02:52 PM (GMT)
I have a new photo of the Whistling ducks - they have learned to "pay attention"... rofl rofl rofl I actually captured this from a video! They were eating, and something startled them. What amazed me is they ALL are looking in the same direction. :P
ojailala - February 27, 2012 02:53 PM (GMT)
Marti... Cowbirds.... and what a great pic of them... WOW!!!!.. actually, they are Brown-Headed Cowbirds.
The ducks are just awesome too!! You are getting great shots. :)^ :clk:

Nature always surprises us. :D O.C. GIRL HELPS OWL CAM CHICKS GET LEG BANDS.http://www.ocregister.com/news/owl-342031-...one-chicks.html

adklaurie - February 27, 2012 04:05 PM (GMT)
Marti - some information on the Brown headed cow birds you might like to know.
Nesting BehaviorThe Brown-headed Cowbird does not build a nest of its own. The female lays her eggs in the nests of other bird species. The host parents then raise the cowbird chick as their own. The cowbird's egg usually hatches a day or two before the host's eggs. Rapid growth allows the cowbird chick to out compete the host's chicks for food and space in the nest. The result is that the host's chicks usually perish. Female cowbirds have a long reproductive period and can lay as many as 80 eggs over a two month period.
The Brown headed cow birds have also been known to destroy the host nest's eggs to ensure survival of their own. . . :(
ojailala - February 27, 2012 04:05 PM (GMT)
according to my bird books, the cowbird stretches from coast to coast... and I can see how you might think they were blackbirds... what zoom are you using Marti??
susano - February 27, 2012 04:12 PM (GMT)
Thank you for the birthday wishes....hope everyone has a great day!!! I haven't been posting much but have been keeping an eye on the nests...

:)^ :)^ A lot of people go to very extreme measures to get rid of them, in order to have more of the song birds.

This is hysterical! Apparently, this was a story on CBS Sunday morning about The Villages in FL (a community of retired folks.) The beginning made me laugh and I thought these folks had too much time on their hands...by the end of the video, I was trying to decide on what type of golf cart I wanted to buy.

One of the five students who were shot this morning in an Ohio high school has died :'( :candle:
What an absolute horror story. The shooter was a fellow student who had threatened he would bring a gun to school and nobody believed he would do it :o

Since the only nominated film we have seen is 'The Help' and DH isn't too keen on going to see 'The Artist' or 'Hugo', we've decided to go see 'A Separation' after reading the following:
The Movie: A Separation
Movie Trailer (2:02)
"I had never heard about this marvelous Iranian film until it opened in my town this past Friday.
We saw it on Saturday night with 2 other couples & all of us were mesmerized. Hands-down, this is a "must-see" film. Powerful, disturbing, painful to watch--with the kind of real-life conundrums that can happen to any family. Caring for an elderly parent with Alzheimer's, wanting to make a better life for oneself & one's children, being out-of-work, keeping a marriage together when you're bombarded with unresolvable impossible challenges. And then throw in the strict Iranian legal system and a black and white religious code--well, you can only imagine.
Don't miss this film if it's available where you live. And if it's not, put it in your Netfilx queue now. Full disclosure: It's in Farsi with English subtitles--but, you'll soon not even notice."
"Step lightly into 'A Separation' if you are caring for an elderly parent, going through a divorce or wrangling for custody of your child.
These painful themes are explored in writer-director Asghar Farhadi's finely crafted drama that has already collected shelf-loads of major film awards (including last night's Best Foreign Language Oscar).
It teems with conflicts involving class, generations, responsibility, mental health and good old-fashioned lying. In the end, it's all about morality.
When you're pushed against the wall to the brittle end of your emotions, how do you react?
'A Separation' ends with a whimper, not a bang, but that is essential to Farhadi's realism.
How often do life's most challenging situations end neat and clean?"
~ Clint O'Connor, Plain Dealer Film Critic
All we have to do now is wait for it to show up at a movie theater here

:X: the sandhills actually use the nest for :egg:
Cowbirds - They have just about wiped out the Oregon Junkos around the cabin. We used to have a decent population in the summer but then the cowbirds started showing up. It's rare to see a Junko now. :( I do love the song of the cowbird but nothing else.
adklaurie - February 27, 2012 07:24 PM (GMT)
