Yes we finally have snow ..... haven't taken a close look out the door but a nice covering so far .... they are saying 3-5" by end of day- we'll see

We have a hockey game to go to tonight so better be done by then :)

Hope this finds everyone feeling better and ready to enjoy their weekend!

Guess we'll be staying close to home although ES seems to have a fuse blown on his car so will run over and have that looked at.... hard to drive at night when you can't see how fast you are going :D

I guess no cubbies for Jewel yet? She needs to get with it :pacing:

Sad moment Thurs night - ES was on the subway headed to his transfer to train when someone jumped/pushed in front of the one he was on (in 2nd car) :'( he said they were just pulling into a station when the brakes were hit hard .... a brief announcement made and they were able to get off the train (2 cars had platformed) and get a connecting train - he said cops and EMS were there by time he could get off but the power hadn't been shut down so they couldn't get on the tracks ....... brief article in papers but no ID or confirmation as to what happened - sad, sad, sad .......

Note: Aug 11 - 78 floors up / glass up to 53rd floor

They are in high 80's floor now ?? I'll have to ask ES

all photos clickables - they are from his lunch time walks with his cell :)

ps that's Tower 7 behind Tower 1 in the first 3 photos - you can see the progress of Tower 1 as it overtakes Tower 7 in height! Tower 7 was also done by Gary's office - SOM!

Deb, great shots of Tower 1! Thanks.

I thought ES was going on site yesterday - he was dressed in jeans and workboots but turns out some of his team got to visit another construction site uptown around 46th - not his project but interesting nonetheless!

His office is only a couple blocks from Tower 1 so at lunch when he goes out to walk a bit, he sometimes goes by the site and has a look - posting photos on FB for our friends to be updated on the visual progress! It's a beautiful TALL building indeed.

He also goes to Battery Park a lot and looks for Zelda LOL - she was sighted recently so we know she was not someone's thanksgiving dinner - she'd be tough anyway - she's pretty old!

Good morning Peep's Deb - CatM Linda R.I.

:bday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY Joanie. May your day be Special in every way! :bday:

Started on my Antibiotic last night and either had a reaction from it, or the Intestinal Bug that's going around.
In the last 3 nights I've had 4 hours of sleep. None at all last night with all the coughing and wheezing I'm doing. Had Chicken Noodle Soup for dinner and went to bed.

At 2:10 A.M. I was still awake and decided to check on the Weather outside. I can always tell when it's snowing. Traffic sounds different, and the bedroom is lighter. I knew this storm was coming days ago with my knees hurting.
It's snowing heavily at this time, and is supposed to change over to :ice: which should be a lot of fun later when we have to go out!

They invited us to celebrate Chinese New Year tomorrow night at Ookas Sushi Bar, so I am going to make a Veggie Tray with the Baked Videlia Dip. These people know how to throw a PARTY! I have never seen such spreads as they put out. Some items ex Ducks feet I will NOT EAT! Clams, crabs, lobster, steaks, salads oh yeah babe count me in. Last time we went I made my Mango Salsa, and there wasn't any left to bring back home! It was gone in a FLASH, and so was my Red Spicy Salsa too. The Chef's there wanted to have the recipe's. So since they give me theirs when asked I share with them too. The asparagus is to die for there and I was told how to fix it. Now it's perfect every time!

catM - January 21, 2012 02:57 PM (GMT)
Cricket, should be a great celebration of Chinese New Year. Enjoy!

Many years ago my sister and I attended a dinner for Chinese New Year in Chinatown in San Francisco. What a feast! Not sure what everything was, but everything was so good. We were guests of the family and only one "child", a man about my age, spoke English and even he did not know all the English words for the foods. It was a wonder experience.

Good Morning Peeps ! and Happy New Year too! It's been a LONG time since I've poked my head into chat....but hope to be doing it more often...have been busy with the shelter...got a new website up and running for our Eva Burrell Animal Shelter here in Manistique, MI that was a job and a half...makes me think maybe Deb should look for someone else to work the NAC this year...

anyway...here's an update from Reese Lukei of CCB about Norfolk Botanical Garden eagles:

We do not yet have all our questions answered about the death of the adult female bald eagle at Norfolk Botanical Garden on Jan 6, 2012. However, as of yesterday Jan 20, 2012, we do have the answer to one question. Is the current female that the male is with the same female that he had been with since Sept 2011? The answer – NO! The current female is yet another fifth year bald eagle in her first breeding season. Look at her tail feathers that have brown/black in them unlike the prior female. She is also molting head feathers with a distinct bare spot in the top of her head, and her bill is still turning yellow with grey. She also has many more older, more worn, lighter brown body contour feathers. Eagle cam photos Jan 21, 2012.

if anyone is interested............just wanted to share it all with you...

hope all is going well in IWS eagle land...............! :}^ :}^

<::: Eagle Deaths at Norfolk Botanical Garden <:::

Statement prepared by Dr Bryan Watts, Director of The Center for Conservation Biology, with respect to the death of an adult and a juvenile bald eagle at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Eagle Mortality Norfolk Botanical Garden :'( :'( :'(

In just the past 2 weeks, two eagles have been found dead within the grounds of Norfolk Botanical Garden that were associated with power lines. The first was an adult-plumaged female and the second was a juvenile-plumaged bird. The juvenile clearly died by trauma-related mid-line strike, and the adult is suspected as having also died by trauma-related mid-line strike. The extent to which these mortalities were facilitated by interactions with other eagles is not clear. We have very little information on causes and rates of eagle mortality but such events are likely much more common than we currently know.

On a global scale, our electrical infrastructure kills millions of birds annually. There are three common ways that birds are killed when interacting with transmission or distribution lines. The most common of these is referred to as pole electrocution. Birds perching on power poles are electrocuted when they come in contact with two conductors and complete a circuit. To overcome this problem, power companies have retrofitted power poles in areas known to have problems to prevent birds from making these contacts. The second most common cause is referred to as a mid-line electrocution which occurs when a large bird flies through the lines and is able to complete a circuit by touching two wires with its wing tips. The third form of mortality is when a bird flies into lines does not complete a circuit but is killed by the trauma. Bald eagles are particularly vulnerable to mortalities related to the electrical infrastructure because they are large enough to bridge the gap between conductors.

In a recent investigation of 62 eagle mortalities caused by power lines within the upper Chesapeake Bay, Bryan Watts and Libby Mojica from The Center for Conservation Biology determined that both line location and context had a significant influence on the likelihood that they would kill eagles. Lines that are near water or foraging areas are crossed regularly and have a greater likelihood of being problem lines. Lines that are exposed in open areas are much more likely to kill eagles compared to those that are associated with screening vegetation. This is because tall trees planted near electrical lines serve to shift the flight line of eagles above the power lines.

We have beautiful :rn: for several hours now. :)^ Not the blustery kind with big wind, just slow steady kind--sounds so soothing. We are way behind on our rainfall this winter--so this is a good thing. :ok: I requested DH to make us his delicous BEEF STEW today. He does it in the pressure cooker (which I am terrified to use ..) .
