Random vignettes and sections of articles from the actual time period will appear in most, if not all, issues, so all can see what was really in the news in the 1860s/70s! (Some of it is pretty ridiculous.) Unfortunately, newspapers from this time period from Colorado are hard to get through the Internet, so most will be from nearby states. A SAFE JOURNEY
If there arises a need to embark on a journey, do not forget that many dangers await the unprepared and inexperienced traveler. Dangers are greatly reduced by travelling on the railroad or stagecoach. Routes to destinations out west are served through the railroad, going from Buffalo Creek to Denver and beyond. The stagecoach is available for other routes. Contact the respective offices for information on routes and fares.
Excerpts from the Maquoketa Sentinel, as published in Maquoketa, Iowa, on June 30, 1868:

ONE OF THE "GOD AND MORALITY" PARTY
Senator Lanier, of Scott county [Iowa], has deserted a wife and four children and fled to California with the wife of his brother-in-law. An exchange remarks: "What a commentary this is, on the spotless unblemished, untouchable, puritanic party. What a report to go forth to the world, that a radical member of the Iowa senate, who had frantically gulped down impeachment, negro suffrage, and every ism yet advanced by the higher law fanatics, and whose soul has, of course, been supposed to be as drifted snow, has "got up and dusted" with his sister-in-law, leaving a dozen little children uncared for."
The New York Tribune has an exceedingly pathetic appeal for "veterans in the front," meaning that the soldiers are expected to boost the radical party into power again. It is not the first time that the radical office builders and home guards begged the "veterans to the front." So long as the veterans would go to the front, these loyal gentlemen had a good thing in office-holding and plundering.

A lady of Antwept, Belgium, was recently delivered of four female children at birth. According to the local journals, this occurrence created quite a sensation in that town. When the christening took place the church was crowded with spectators, and thousands of persons lined in the streets along which the cortege of four nurses, with their charges, were to pass. After the return home of the children, they had to be brought out to the balcony of the house to receive an ovation from the crowd assembled in the street. All the little ones, as well as the mother, are doing well.
If your husband chews tobacco, be thankful that he does not smoke. If he both chews and smokes, be thankful that he does not drink. If he does all three, thank God he will not live long.
The track of the pacific railroad is now laid a distance of 638 miles west of Omaha. The road is graded 100 miles further, and the graders expect to reach Salt Lake by the 4th of July. About which time [Schuyler] Colfax intends making another visit to Brigham Young's family.

SEARCH CALLED OFF
POLICE- The extensive search for Denver City Treasurer elect, Henry Scarborough, who was reported missing nearly a month ago today, has been officially called off as of noon yesterday after weeks of inconclusive search and rescue and recovery efforts have yielded no promising leads as to the suspicious disappearance of the Buffalo Creek Banker. The announcement made by Mayor Stiles came directly from the Denver Chief of Police who did not wish to disclose any information in the closing of the case as the calling off of search efforts garnered public outcry from Scarborough’s hometown of Buffalo Creek. It is protocol for police to call off searches after a month of inconclusive searching but never before has a suspect of such political importance vanished and under such suspicious circumstances.
On the eve of November the eleventh, the typically punctual City Treasurer hopeful failed to make an appearance at a scheduled dinner party in honor of two close friends at a Buffalo Creek Saloon. After an hour of waiting it became clear to Scarborough’s friends that something may be amiss and a small search party was launched to inspect Denver where Scarborough was last seen entering the livery to fetch his horse. Further investigation revealed a buckboard wagon typically used to transport prisoners parked behind the burned down Cherry Creek Livery on the other side of town, the interior of which was covered in fresh blood. A stable hand working at the Thoroughbred stables where Scarborough typically boards his animals, stated he witnessed the banker being beaten and then loaded into the wagon and this was the last time anyone saw him alive.
An extensive search was of course immediately mounted, with the election just on the horizon it was considered in bad taste to remove the favored Scarborough from the ballots. But as days turned to weeks it became clear Mister Scarborough was not returning any time soon if at all. The election went on without him and after a surprising turnout of voters from Buffalo Creek, and despite his absence and probable demise, Scarborough won City Treasurer. After the decision was made to end the recovery efforts yesterday a reporter from the Rocky Mountain Times ventured to Scarborough’s hometown for a word with some of his friends and family. At risk of possible bodily harm from the inhospitable townfolk, reporter Michael K. Jacobson was forced to deem the unsuccessful venture a “no-comment” and return to Denver. Scarborough will remain listed as a missing person until his family or closest of kin chooses to label the case as a homicide and officially declare him deceased.
GOLDEN RAILS
The spur to the “Magic City of the Plains” has proven bold and ambitious to all Denverites but the railroad company has announced an official estimation as to the date of the much anticipated joining of the Denver Pacific with the Union Pacific. By June of next year it is expected that anyone living in Denver wishing to catch a train to Cheyenne can very well do so in just under four hours on an express. This will not only provide more job opportunities but also finally connect Denver, Colorado to the rest of the country. In June of 1870 with much gratitude to the Pacific Railway Company, Denver is expected to become a city of further commerce, wealth and success, not just another place on the map.

IT IS OFFICIAL
WYOMING- The bill by Wyoming Territorial Legislature, which was voted on last night, has been officially signed into law as of this morning by Governor John Allen Campbell granting women the right to vote in government elections and hold office. This unprecedented event is the first act of women’s rights in the country and many plan to soon follow suit.
Gallatin, Missouri- The culprit behind the bank heist in Gallatin on the seventh of December has been positively identified as a Jesse James of Kearney, Missouri. James has previously been the subject of several other robberies dating back to sixty-seven but the heist of the Daviess County Savings Association on the seventh ended in the shooting death of cashier John W. Sheets a former Captain in the war at the hand of James. Despite the efforts of a well-armed posse, James and his small gang, including notorious brother Frank James, escaped. Missouri Governor Thomas T. Crittenden has since labeled the bandit an outlaw and set a reward for his capture and or arrest.

The first ever traversing of the newly laid Union Pacific was successfully executed yesterday evening as the first train to cross the span of tracks arrived in Sacramento, California after departing Omaha, Nebraska just three days prior. A full traversing of the country is expected in the near future as a steamer worthy of such a journey is prepared for the arduous trip at a train yard in New York.

DAUNTING EAST RIVER BRIDGE PROJECT
New York, NY- Even the most bold and determined of New York’s ingenious engineers are feeling the pressure and even questioning whether a bridge the projected size of the suspension project in New York is not only possible but safe. If the project succeeds the East River Bridge will be the largest of its kind in the entire world and plans to begin its construction were laid on the commissioners’ table on New Year’s Day, the construction beginning just two days later. The bridge, as its name suggests, will span the width of the East River connecting the boroughs of Brooklyn Heights and Manhattan. The original designs and proposals for the project were submitted to the City Council in January of 1867 and has since been collecting money from tax payers, loans and city funding to start the project which is well underway at this point.
The projected length of the bridge is expected to reach at least 1,500 feet, or a quarter of a mile, but it is the massive towers housing the state of the art cable system that makes the suspension bridge so unique that will be the hallmark of this glorious architectural giant. Early schematics show that to support the weight and length of such a bridge the limestone and granite towers will have to reach a height of 275 feet.
Those hoping to see the bridge in its completion any time soon may find themselves to be disappointed, it has already been confirmed by engineers that a project of this undertaking will take several years to complete with a projected completion date around 1885 but it is possible it can be finished before then as well. After it has been open to the public the bridge will provide a way for residents of Brooklyn Heights to access Manhattan without the need to ferry and will more than likely be a milestone not only for New York but for the country as a whole and pave the way for more American engineering marvels to come.
STANDARD OIL
Mister John D. Rockefeller has incorporated Standard Oil in Ohio and sold 10,000 shares, most of which to himself and his partnerships; brother William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, Samuel Andrews, Steve Harkness and Oliver Jennings. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil is expected to absorb or bankrupt most smaller oil companies in Ohio, particularly Cleveland, within just a few months. The enterprise under the control of business tycoons the likes of Rockefeller and his brother, is expected to grow fast and grow large with many refineries planned to be built throughout Ohio within the fiscal year.

LOST AT SEA
BOSTON, MA- Desperate searching of the North Atlantic is now underway for the SS City of Boston and her 191 passengers and crewmen after she has neither been seen nor heard from since she departed Halifax on January 28 on her way to Liverpool. A terrific mass of gale force winds blew up across the Northern Atlantic just after her departure and now it seems may be to blame for her untimely demise. Among those aboard include many businessmen and their families and many decorated officers from the Royal Artillery returning from Nova Scotia and renowned Captain Halcrow. The SS City of Boston, if she is found to have been lost, only joins a long list of others lost at sea in the ice fields, though she was forged from iron rather than steel a more than worthy iceberg may have been her undoing. Sailing since she was finished in a port in Scotland, the SS City of Boston has proven her worth for the past six years sailing multiple times from England to America to dock in either Nova Scotia or New York and Boston Harbor. Prayers and thoughts are with the families of the men, women and children that are feared lost.
Virginia- The state of Virginia’s application for readmission to the Union has been signed and accepted by President Grant as of January 26. Even five years after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, three states still remain outside the Union; Mississippi, Texas and Georgia, the first of which has applied for statehood and should regain its status sometime next month. Virginia is the first state to apply for statehood since Alabama’s request was accepted back in mid-July. Until states are accepted they have no say in the governing of their commerce nor will the war-torn and indebted southern states receive the assistance of the Union in getting back on their feet. Virginia state legislators, congressmen and other representatives are expected to return to their respected places in Washington within the week.

Denver City Treasurer Elect, Henry Scarborough has not only been rumored in the past few weeks, to be alive, but also living comfortably at his home in Buffalo Creek. Efforts to locate him after his disappearance in November have proved as fruitless as they do now as family and friends decline to comment on the rumors. Questions concerning the Buffalo Creek businessman’s whereabouts, health and mental state continue to go unanswered as relatives offer no comments and simply request their privacy and have threatened physical harm to anyone trespassing on their properties for questioning.

CONGRESS RATIFIES 15th AMENDMENT
Congress has officially- passed the Fifteenth Amendment as of the thirtieth day of March. As everyone knows the bill to allow the registration of black voters was proposed and passed on the third of February among much excitement and controversy. The amendment to the United States Constitution was not officially ratified until the thirtieth of March. The amendment is not restrictive to any race but rather denies the government from keeping anyone from voting based on their race or color. It must be noted this amendment does not include women. The first section specifies “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The amendment is still open to changes, for instance the adding of “Right to Hold Office.” A Mississippian Republican by the name of Hiram Rhodes Revels was sworn into the US Congress on the twenty-fifth of February and became the first black man to ever sit in the US Congress.
Women’s suffrage- is still gaining steam and after the bill giving women the right to vote and hold office in Wyoming was passed, as expected other states are looking to follow suit. As of the twelfth of February women now hold the right to vote and serve in government appointed office positions in the Utah Territory. United States citizens are still left scratching their heads of course as most were expecting the more advanced eastern states to pass the bill much sooner. As of yet the only two states in the country approving of women’s suffrage are Wyoming and Utah.
Reconstruction- The control of the US Military has been lifted from the Mississippi Territory and the state has been readmitted to the Union as of the twenty-third of February. On March thirtieth Texas was also readmitted and the only remaining state left to rejoin is Georgia. The Georgian Governor, Rufus B. Bullock, has already stated he and his constituents are preparing to request readmission and should be ready sometime next month.
FIRSTS FOR SPORTS
The Football Association- organized and played its first ever International match on the fifth of March when England played Scotland at The Oval in London the results of which was a draw at one to one. The game was held two weeks after its first initial date when the field was deemed unfit for play due to excessive frost. Football is mostly played in Europe but also Spanish and Portuguese countries, the sport is not yet recognized here in the US.
The Chicago Baseball Club- played their first ever game as a professional team in April against the Saint Louis Unions of the National Association of Base Ball Players. This sport has seen resurgence since the termination of the New York Knickerbockers in favor of a larger club, now known as The National Association of Base Ball Players which was inaugurated in fifty-seven to better the rules of the game and boost its popularity with more teams. The club has the potential of becoming the first ever professional sports league in the United States.
PARAGUAYAN WAR
The war between-the Triple Alliance and Paraguay is over after Marshal Francisco Solano López was cornered at Cerro Cora where he refused to surrender and he and his troops were killed. The war between the Alliance; Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, and Paraguay began in 1864 and the origins of the six year war are still foggy but it is believed it started during Spanish colonization.

CONTROVERSY AT NEW
UNIVERSITY
The newly established- Syracuse University has officially opened its doors on the twenty-fourth of March to its first enrollers. The college is part of the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary that was founded in thirty-two but sought “college” status almost two decades later and relocated to Syracuse. The controversy surrounding the prestigious school is its discrimination against women. Previously the Genesee College accepted the enrollment of females into its classes but after the relocation and renaming the Syracuse University has been very restricting on its previous ruling of female students. The public has been assured that previous chancellor members of the school are working on changing the minds of administrators that view women as inferior and incapable of mastering higher learning and that co-education will remain an important aspect of the University.
Christmas- has officially been declared a Federal Holiday in the United States. For the past ten years fourteen US states have been celebrating this special day as a legal holiday, mostly in New England. President Grant signed the bill on the twenty-sixth of June establishing the observance of Christmas for the United States as a whole. In observance of a Federal Holiday all non-essential federal government offices will be closed and all employees at such offices will be paid for the holiday. All non-government employees who may have to work on the legal holiday shall receive holiday pay in addition to their regular wages.

The United States Department of Justice has officially begun operation after the signing into office by Grant on the thirtieth of June. Under this office the operation of the Attorney Generals, Civil Rights and Criminal divisions and law enforcement agencies such as the United States Marshals Service will operate under the Department of Justice.
Saying goodbye to- a great American general and British novelist, this issue marks the end of an era in the loss of the great Charles Dickens and American Union general George Henry Thomas. Dickens, the English writer has passed away at the age of fifty-eight in Kent, England after it is believed he suffered another stroke. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead by his physician at his residence on the ninth of June. Dickens is known for such literary works as The Adventures of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and A Tale of Two Cities. The Union Army also lost one of the great commanders of its troops in the Western Theater after he was a soldier in the Mexican War. George Henry Thomas, fifty-three, died on the twenty-eighth of March of a stroke in San Francisco.
Reminder- Denver City Officials are still asking members of their district to be aware that the decennial census is taking place this year and that official census takers appointed by the state will be going door to door starting on the first day of June. If your presence at your home is impossible on this date for whatever reason it is asked that you or a member of your household go to Denver or your nearest government agency and submit the census report there. Refer to the last issue of the Gazette for the census questions to be better prepared for the official census taker.
