The faithful privateer is a good father figure, caring for his crewmates, and, at the same time, a well rounded and well researched character, written by a very good writer, who has returned to us after a long break.

Faithfulness deserves to be spotlighted too!

She loves the sea and enjoys every time she can accompany her father to an inspection of the Navy ships.

Father – Charles Joubert de la Bastide
Mother – Theresa d’Orleans (deceased)

Born in Rochefort in France she was brough up into a wealthy family and in the heart of fashion making. Her family on her father’s side was all military men of some kind and on her mothers side they were higher nobility, with political influence. During her upbringing she spend a lot of her time with her mother, as her father was a busy man at sea. She grew more fond of her mother and although she loved when her father was home, he couldn’t replace her mother. Her Grandfather paid for her to have the best private teachers in the region to teach Marie what she should know including, calculating and languages. She was taught in French reading and writing as well as Spanish and of cause Latin so she could follow the ceremonies at church. She always had a great interest in exploring new things and learning new things so she paid good attention to the teachers.

This made it a total tragedy for her though when her mother got ill by smallpox and died when Marie was only nine years old. For a while Little Marie was being taken care of by her aunt on her mothers side and if not fate had intervened she might have been staying in France with her Aunt. But a new career for her father seemed to make him less bound to the military and more into politics - he got appointed the Governor of Saint Domingue. It was decided that Marie should follow her father to the Caribbean and settle there. It would be a good experience for her. And a good way for her to meet new people and especially young officers in the King’s Service in need of a good wife. Or perhaps rich plantation owners, too.

The trip to Hispaniola was amazing. Her father was used to a life at sea and he managed to make her feel comfortable at first until her sealegs were more used to the rocking of the ship. Then she started to love the sea. The opportunities and challenges it presented her. Of course when not being told to be more careful by scared officers who saw no fun in her sniffing around the large ship.

The islands were just as amazing and dream like to her. The temperature was always nice and it was hard not to be happy all the time. And naturally the new title of her father’s made her family very influential in the town. Well in the entire island in fact. She quickly found some good places to be and play around and one of those places was the harbour where her father often would inspect the French warships. What perfect opportunity for Marie to explore more?
