Date: 20-th of July 1719, early afternoon
Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, the tavern “Elixir d’Armagnac”

It was with mixed feelings that Sara had disembarked the Caribbean Siren this time. On one hand, she was happy to finally not being trapped on a ship full of rumors about her and Cesar anymore, on the other hand that meant that the rumors would spread around. Not that Sara really cared what random person thought wrong things about her, however Cass was bound to hear the rumors as well and he would definitely be a tad too happy to tease her back from all the times where she had teased him.

Obviously Sara had immediately sought to Maribel’s Tavern to get a good meal and something other than water to drink. For a couple of days she enjoyed Maribel’s hospitality and felt quite good that she wasn’t on the sailor’s diet anymore so to speak. It wasn’t because the food at sea was terrible, but compared to Maribel’s cooking, it was definitely dull and especially when it was mostly the same every day. In fact Sara considered buying something that she could keep in her locker. Perhaps some biscuits or something else that wouldn’t just rot after one day at sea.

This night was no different than any other. Sara stepped into the inn and found an empty table in the corner. She had brought along some of the paperwork from the Siren and was planning to look it over while eating. However first she had to order the meal. She looked up and found that the inn was very quiet this day. In fact it was so quiet that Sara wondered if it was too early to eat supper. It didn’t really matter though. Better now where there was time than later when the place was full. Sara smiled when she was approached by one of the barmaids. She had seen her before a couple of times. A blonde girl who seemed to be new around there.

Perhaps her head had been lost in the clouds for the past week or so, but Rose didn't care. Oh, she cared that her situation had been irrevocably changed, but young girl that she was, she could only smile and think that the world was wonderful, that Cesar was wonderful, and that she was the luckiest girl in the world. The things they'd shared and oh, the way he'd made her feel. Rose had never imagined that it could be so good, so good that she wasn't too guilty about it being out of wedlock. She was still a good and proper young lady, despite such things and she was head over heels in love, she was sure of it.

Besides, Maribel seemed to be acting almost the same way as she was and she wondered if she was in love, too. Perhaps she should steal a word with her some time because she was fond of the older woman and wanted her happy.

The only thing that marred her mood was talk she overheard between some sailors one night, talk about Cesar and she didn't want to believe it. Could he really be courting some woman on his ship as well as being with her here on shore? No, she didn't want it to be true. Her foolish, naive heart wanted to believe that he loved her, or that he would grow to and for the first time in her life she felt jealousy trickle through her, though she tried hard to push it back. Jealousy was a sin, after all.

She'd seen the dark haired woman a couple of times and had even served her once, but otherwise she'd been too much in her own world to ask for a name or any other details, but when she came over to her tonight, her eyes happened to glance upon the words on the papers before her and she bit her lip. The Siren. Cesar's ship. Did this woman work there, on that ship, beside Cesar? Could this woman be the one he was rumored to be seeing?

As politely as possible, smoothing her skirts and trying not to feel terribly inadequate and ugly next to the lovely woman, she approached and gave a small smile.
"Can I get you anything?"

In an almost empty inn it didn’t take long for one of the barmaids to approach and ask for an order. Sara offered the blonde girl a faint smile as she looked up from her papers. “Yes… I’ll have some chicken with potatoes…” She said and let the girl take notes or however she made sure to remember it all. “And then a glass of lemonade, thanks.” With the order being completed Sara was just about to get back to her papers. She could have found some activity to spend her time on with some of the other crewmen of the Siren, but not being a social person, Sara actually preferred this. It was quiet and she didn’t have to let ear to false rumors.

Or did she? Sara had barely finished her order when two of the ordinary crewmen entered the tavern and spotted Sara. One of them lit up with a smile as he strode over to her. He glanced over Rose for a moment as he had been at sea for a while and she was a woman. However he was more in the mood for teasing Sara at the moment. “Where are you hiding Tar?” He asked teasingly and smiled back at his buddy. Sara just sent him an annoyed glance wondering if she should warn him that his next visit to sickbay might not be a pleasant one if he kept up this bantering. “Is he still slumbering in your quarters, Chell? ” He continued as they moved towards a table to take a seat. They didn’t seem to want an answer from Sara, they simply sought to tease her. Sara shook her head and looked at them for a moment. They were a couple of idiots. But that was the power of rumors it seemed.

Rose did, indeed, have a reasonable memory but she also had some parchment and charcoal to write with and she jotted it down so cook would know what to do and she smiled at the pretty woman pleasantly...until the men came over and started to speak with her. Not wanting to appear rude and as if she were listening, she turned to leave but was suddenly caught like a deer in a bright light. Tar? Asleep in this woman's quarters?

She felt suddenly sick, stomach tight and hot and even worse, hot, angry tears had sprung to her eyes thought she blinked them back valiantly. No...her Tar...her Cesar, he would not do such a thing to her, would he? But how well did she really know him? He was a pirate, after all, and pirates were renowned for their lustful lives, but it hurt so terribly to think that she had given him the gift of her chastity only to have it treated so carelessly.

Still, perhaps she'd misheard and as soon as the men disappeared, she hovered over the beautiful brunette, her heart thumping painfully in her chest.
"Tar? Do you know...Cesar?" She wanted to say HER Cesar, but right now she was confused and upset and didn't want to believe what she was hearing.

It wasn’t easy to come up with a good reply to the sailors teasing. Of course Sara could tell them exactly what had happened that night on the ship, but that would accomplish nothing. The rumors that circulated now wouldn’t disappear, in fact they would only be joined by new rumors about Sara’s past if she had to explain why she and Cesar and been seen close together in her room. But even if Sara did plan to say something she didn’t get the chance. She had almost forgotten about the barmaid when she suddenly spoke up next to Sara. Sara turned her head and looked at the woman who asked if she knew Cesar.

Yeah…” Sara started not really making the connection in her mind that the barmaid could be one of Cesar’s many girls. “I’m around him every day…” She continued and resisted the urge to call him an insufferable oaf. Not that she didn’t like him, but Sara’s feelings towards Cesar was very confused and she wasn’t going to let herself fall into the trap called love. Especially not with a ladies man like Cesar. Yes he was charming like hell, but that only meant that Sara was weaker than she wanted to be for falling for it occasionally. However obviously this girl knew him too and perhaps she was blessed with the luck not to see him as much as Sara did. “What’s your name?” Sara asked curiously. “I can give Cesar your greetings later when I see him if you’d like” It was a fact that Sara never used people’s nicknames. Yes she had a nickname of her own, but only Cass was call by his. Perhaps a defense mechanism from Sara. If she didn’t call people by those diminutives, then she wouldn’t bond with them right?

She didn't want to become one of those possessive, jealous girls, but she was still a child in so many ways and still believed in foolish things such as love and right now she was sure that it was love that she and Cesar shared. He was her first lover, after all, and that alone gave him a very special place in her heart and yes, she couldn't deny that she felt lighter, happier and her heart beat faster when he was with her and it had nothing to do with his touches.

When the woman confirmed knowing Cesar and not only that, being with him every day, her lips tightened as she fought for control of her emotions, giving a slow nod.
"Every day?" How lucky this woman was to be able to live beside the handsome man, when all Rose got were stolen hours during the night and a few moments during the day when he sought her out, but she'd believed it was simply because he was busy with his work. A woman had to respect a mans work, after all, didn't her daddy say?

"I'm Rose...and no, no need to pass along any messages. He should be in to see me some time this evening." And he would wait until she was ready to retire for the evening and would come upstairs with her and he would hold her in those marvelous arms and make her feel alive and whisper to her in that deep timbre of his that sent tingles down her spine. It took her breath away to simply think about it and, with another glance at the woman, she wondered if she felt the same, if Rose was merely another notch and she swallowed thickly against the torrent of emotions.

"Are...are you and he..." Blinking a few times, she wasn't quite sure she wanted to know the answer, but she had to ask. How could she retain her pride if she did not? Her voice lowered and she glanced around the room before taking the seat opposite the woman, leaning across the table to speak confidentially. "Because if you are, you should know that he shares my bed, also." And then, almost defiantly. "I love him."

Perhaps Sara’s mind was working a bit slower today than it usually did. Normally Sara was exceptionally good at perceiving the situation around her and understand the words not uttered. But with false rumors running around the ship and now the shore too, and with the slight uncertainty within Sara herself whether or not she would actually have wanted those rumors to be true, her usual insight seemed completely gone. So when Rose a bit hesitantly repeated Sara’s words about being around Cesar every day, she didn’t think much about it.

Even when Rose continued and explained that she would see him later did Sara really think that she was about to dive into a discussion where one man, one misunderstanding and a lot of feelings would clash. However before all that came into play, Sara still had to respond to the barmaid’s introduction. “Nice to meet you Rose” Sara said and gave a polite nod. “I am Sara Mitchell… I am the doctor on the Caribbean Siren” Sara just added a nod in response to the fact that Rose didn’t want her to give her greetings to Cesar.

But then the revelation struck. Now Sara started to realize where this was going. The rumors were the reason why Rose had taken a seat and engaged Sara in conversation. What Sara didn’t know though was that the biggest surprise hadn’t been spilled yet. She didn’t say anything yet though. Sara let Rose finish her speech but when Rose said that Cesar was sharing her bed as well, as well?, Sara looked away for a moment. The look on her face was one of annoyance. Not really because of Rose, but because this meant that Sara had ended up as another name on Cesar’s list of women, even though nothing happened between them. When she looked back at Rose she heard her use the words: I love him. “Well good for you” Was all Sara could really say at first. “But are you sure he feels the same?” It wasn’t really because Sara wanted to be cold or mean. But if Rose honestly thought that Cesar wanted more than a warm bed at night, Sara would pity her.

If Rose had been expecting any sort of reaction from this woman, it wasn't this. First, she didn't deny her liaison with Cesar, which caused her stomach to clench uncomfortably and a cold tingling down her spine, and second? She didn't even seem sorry or angry or...or anything really and when she asked her question, Rose's eyes fell and her jaw clenched.

How was she supposed to reply to such a thing? She could give a defiant yes, but would it be true? Cesar was every kind of wonderful to her, and with him being her first and only lover she liked to think she was special to him as much as he was to her, but if he was philandering with another woman, could he really care that much?

It hurt to think that way, to think he didn't care about her and she looked away. This woman, whoever she was, didn't deserve to see her emotions and obviously didn't give a damn how her actions were affecting someone else. In fat, the woman was positively cold about the whole thing and Rose stood, smoothing down her skirt, still not replying to the question, simply because she had no answer.

"I'll get your order, shall I?" Her tone was quiet, defeated. What else could she say or do? She could not argue, she could not defend herself and she most certainly could not compete for his affections with a woman as beautiful and confident as Sara, a woman who sailed with him every day.

For a moment or two Sara was quite annoyed that she had been asked so directly if she and Cesar had ever done anything. Mostly because of the rumors that were now floating around about them but also because deep down Sara really didn’t know how she was feeling about the handsome first mate. Normally she had been so good at keeping up a straight face when people got too close and she had certainly managed to persuade Pavoun to leave her alone unless he was injured enough to need her medical expertise. But with Cesar it was different. Sara hated him for being so charming. She hated him for being a womanizer. She hated him for always smiling. She hated him because he always tried to open her up. She hated him for so many things, but at the same time she did feel a certain warmth whenever she saw him. She did hope that he was the one to enter her room whenever someone knocked. But why? She struggled to keep those thoughts out of her head. And suddenly when looking at Rose, Sara found a good tool to do that.

Rose looked away and avoided Sara’s gaze. It didn’t require much perception to know why Rose had felt so bad after Sara’s very direct question. Sara took a deep breath and hoped that the girl would answer her question so they could move on. But she didn’t. Instead she got up and prepared to leave. Obviously Sara’s very logical and calculating mind had managed not only to ask a very logical question in the case of Cesar’s affection, but also hurt the poor girl who obviously was madly in love. Sara reached out and gently grabbed Rose’s hand. “Hold on one moment…” She said and looked up at Rose. “Please let me explain something to you

Sara gave Rose a chance to get settled in by the table again and used the brief pause to stack her papers in the corner of the table to keep it nice and tidy so there would be room for the food later. Then Sara took another deep breath and looked at Rose for a while before opening her mouth to speak. “Look Rose… I’m sorry if I seem cold… The fact is that I am a little on edge right now because some of the crewmen on the Siren are spreading some rumors about me and Cesar” She said in a calm but clear voice. “I am not interested in causing any trouble between you and him… I simply asked because I know that Cesar has a reputation with women and you could end up getting your heart broken with a guy like him” She continued and looked at Rose for a moment. A part of Sara did hope that Rose would understand what she meant. Not because she wanted Rose to push Cesar away or anything. But at least if she knew the truth about Cesar, Rose would be able to base her choice on more than just her heart.

Rose was, quite simply, defeated. This woman, whoever she was, was surely a better match for Cesar than some silly, innocent girl who was nothing more than a barmaid now, and it made her feel so very ashamed for daring to have feelings for the charming pirate. But who could resist him? His soft words and touches, the kisses that made her dizzy, the smiles that turned her world upside down? To know that he did this with other women? It cut through her very soul, leaving her feeling fragile and exposed and she was rapidly blinking back tears, not wanting this woman to see her pain.

She flinched when the woman grabbed her hand and she almost broke down right there and then. Was this woman now to add salt to her wound, to make her feel even worse? Still, she had asked to explain something and Rose had been brought up too well to make a scene or to deny someone a chance to speak and so she slid, silently into the chair opposite the brunette, smoothing her modest skirts, listening with polite disinterest, at least until the word 'rumor' was said.

At that, she looked up hesitantly, not even daring to hope that it was true. But Sara went on and Rose swallowed thickly. "A rumor?" she repeated softly, eyes wide. "So you mean...you and Cesar are not...?"
Biting her lower lip, she frowned and looked down again.
"A...reputation?" Oh, she understood that only too well, but her emotions were now tumbling around like rough seas. Only a moment ago she'd thought she was nothing but another mark on Cesar's bedpost, and then Sara told of it being nothing but rumors between them which had given hope and now? Now she was being warned of his womanizing.

"Well, maybe...maybe I'll be the one to change him, to make him want to stay with me," she said defiantly, still the naive little girl with dreams of love.

Sara could easily see that Rose wasn’t comfortable. It didn’t take a mind reader to know that while Sara and Rose might not have been best of friends anyway, Cesar had definitely come between them now and to Sara’s surprise, Rose seemed almost willing to just give up and run away crying. However she did take a seat and listened or at least it seemed that way, to Sara’s explanation. Her face changed when Sara mentioned the rumor. Not that Rose’s changing expression stopped her from explaining further, but Rose interrupted her and when she asked in a very innocent voice if Sara and Cesar had been or were doing anything, Sara shook her head. “Cesar is a crewmember and a friend… Nothing more” Sara replied and wondered just how much to say to Rose at this time. “I like him yes and find him quite charming… But I have no reason to let him break my heart so he will remain only as a friend to me

As Rose started to make her wishful thinking that she might be changing Cesar and making him loyal to her alone, Sara leaned back in her chair and wondered if she should keep warning her or just let her have her time with Cesar and then give her what could only be called the benefit of the doubt when it came to actually making Cesar less of a womanizer. Sara certainly didn’t plan to tell Rose that she had actually kissed Cesar, that would be between Cesar and her and would definitely be a bad thing to talk about now. “Maybe you’re right… maybe Cesar just needs the right girl and if that is you then that’s great…” Sara said and looked over at those two idiots who had started this whole thing with the rumor today. “Just ignore these rumors… Obviously these guys want to think about something other than how lonely it is at sea so they make up rumors and who better than the only woman on the ship to make those rumors about?” She said as she looked back at Rose.

Sara's reassurances that Cesar was no more than a crew mate helped her to calm a little, though her stomach was still feeling sensitive after the shock and worry, but she tried hard to remind herself that as much as she loved him, there had been no promises. Of course, being who she was and having been brought up the way she had, she couldn't help but have dreams of love and a good man to marry...but was Cesar that man? She didn't even want to think about the future right now. All that mattered was that right NOW, right at this moment, he was hers and she was his and she was happy.

Still, there were certain things in Sara's words that another woman could easily decipher and Rose pursed her lips. Sara found him charming, but she would not let him break her heart. That meant the woman cared about him, despite what she was saying and it caused her heart to ache foolishly. Was she going to let it ruin what she had, though? Not at all. If anything, it made Rose more determined to be everything Cesar could possibly want in a woman and when Sara wished her well, she smiled, rising slowly from her seat and giving a nod.

"Thank you, Sara," she said sincerely, following her gaze over to the men as the other woman explained about the rumours being spread and she frowned. "I must ask, and please do not think me rude, but...why would a woman choose to serve on a ship of men? Of pirates? Surely you could have set up a practise in a town?"

Sara could see how Rose’s mind worked overtime to process all the recent news. It was so clear that Rose obviously had strong feelings for Cesar and that Sara had started a process that easily could hurt the poor girl. Sara actually felt bad for anything she said that would have hurt Rose, but on the other hand, Sara was also the type who usually managed to keep her feelings and thoughts inside, so she certainly felt that Rose might be too soft and that she wasn’t going to carry Rose on a pillow. Sara would tell the truth. Well much of it anyway.

But As Rose got up, she actually thanked Sara. That was a surprise but then again, Sara had just assured Rose that she wasn’t trying to steal Cesar from her. So Sara offered her a friendly smile and looked back to her documents. She would have thought that Rose simply went back to her work, so when she heard the voice speak up again, she looked up finding that Rose hadn’t moved at all. Rose’s question seemed very logical and quite fair. “Don’t worry… It’s a reasonable question…” Sara assured Rose before continuing. “When I came here I met Maribel and Cass first and when they heard of my former work, they arranged that I met the Captain… Sol… They obviously needed a doctor and I needed a place to work” Of course that was not completely true. But the fact that Cesar had managed to learn of Sara’s past was more than enough. Sara wouldn’t tell anyone else and besides what she had just said was true, she just didn’t explain her desire for revenge. Personal Revenge was actually the primary drive in this.

(so sorry this took so long! Life has been craaaaazy!)

Hovering at the woman's table, Rose glanced toward the kitchens to make sure she wasn't about to get scolded before she asked her question, curiosity getting the better of her, and she nodded slowly at the dark haired doctors answer. It made sense, she supposed, but it still took a particularly brave woman to board a pirate ship with all those men. The things that could have happened to her! She'd heard horror stories and could only thank her lucky stars that she'd found a good and kind man, because Cesar had never hurt her, not once.

"You must be very brave," she said quietly, echoing her thoughts. "I couldn't imagine how hard life at sea can be. I can barely remember coming here with my papa a few years ago, though I do remember having to keep to my room. Papa wouldn't allow me to wander near the men..."
She gave a rueful, apologetic smile and straightened her skirts again, glancing idly at the papers on the table.

"You're busy, I'm sorry. I should let you work and get you something to eat."

Thankfully the blonde girl had calmed down a bit and seemed to have accepted what Sara had said. At least her next words were more directed at Sara and her job. When Rose suggested that Sara had to be very brave, all that Sara could really do was to smile and shake her head. “I may have an unusual job… But I am not brave… I am not fighter and I am never going to climb up in the masts like some of the other sailors. I am a doctor and what I do on the ship is to patched up the men when they get injured or treat them if the fall ill… But yes it is different. No doubt about that

Sara listened to Rose’s explanation about how she had experienced her own time at sea while only as a passenger and nodded understandingly. But before she could respond with anything, even just a confirmation that Rose probably had a very protective father, the young barmaid had already excused herself and suggested that they both got back to their work. Sara gave her a polite smile and nodded. “Yes that would probably be best… But it was nice meeting you Rose

Then she watched as Rose disappeared, no doubt into the kitchen and Sara wondered for a moment about how long it would take before Rose’s feeling would get hurt. Because while Rose was beautiful, she seemed very naïve and unsure about herself and Sara actually feared that Cesar was only taking advantage of that.
