THE YEAR IS 2050, THE CITY IS NEW YORK

REPLICANTS TOO HUMAN? PROTESTS CONTINUE

-----------------------------------------------

we all know them, and see them. they look exactly like us, but the thing is, they are not what we are. they are not human. they look human, and sure, some of them have human mannerisms, but they are more machine than human, underneath it all. beneath the skin lay wire and blood vessels, things once exploited by new path before an immunization was made for the virus unleashed by russia. replicants do better than just offer us organs, now-- they take the jobs that no human wants. the dangerous ones. and why shouldn't they? they're faster and stronger than humans. easily exploitable. programmed to do our bidding. right?

some of them go wrong.

for example, these 'skinwalkers', the replicants made for prostitution, often go rogue, the wiring gets crossed, or something goes wrong, and they're more human than we'd like to believe. often, the rogues have emotions, but the government sends out replicant retirement before they can talk or tell their stories. we hear rumors of some of them walking among us, perhaps the ones that seem a little off on the street, but, of course, no one approaches them. they do the jobs in bars, degrading things to earn a buck and keep their identities and lives. some of them go to canada, where more rights are offered for replicants. new path demands that any rogue be returned to the facilities, but canada doesn't dare extradite what they consider to be a human life.

therefore, are replicants human? are they simply machines? no, of course not. some of them feel. they all look and feel like humans do-- but where do we draw the line for their rights? it seems to me that we treat them all like bad body doubles, something to be scrubbed off the face of the earth, rather than a help. i urge you to treat them as humans, as your brother or your sister or your friend. chances are, you're friends with something made to serve you, and you're not aware of it.

shouldn't we give replicants the same rights as humans? or, at least... shouldn't we dehumanize them?
