What do you all think of these books by Philip Pullman? What do yu think of the new film 'The Golden Compass' Does it do well for the book or ruin the plot?
Tell me all about what you like and dislike about these books.

I think the books are great, Northern Lights is my favourite and I found the Amber Spyglass a bit hard to understand, the last time I read it I was 9.

I think the way Pulman used things from our world and made them work in Lyra's worl with different names and affects was very clever. The creation of Deamons as our souls and the original sin metaphores were great in binding the story together and making these books original.

I loved them.

the film is great but with a few plot twists that differ from the book. It has great Special Effects and shows Lyra's world just how I imagined it.

I had only just started reading the Golden Compass, when for some reason I decided to try to finish Jonathon Strange & and Mr. Norrell. I really liked it, and my dad and sister love His Dark Materials. We wanted to see the movie, but didn't get the chance.

What fascinated me was the controversy that surrounded the books. I don't quite understand, but I suppose that's because I haven't read the books. From what I can tell, there isn't anything wrong with them. It's all fascinating, but not theologically dangerous.

I found it very odd, then, when I heard that he had admitted to trying to undermine religion in an interview. It seems like such a strange thing to say. I know I'm sidetracking a little, but what do you think of all this?

And, since I've just finished reading Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell, I suppose I'll go on to reading the Golden Compass.

Northern Lights/Golden compass is great, slow-ish start but great.

Jonathon Strange & Mr. Norrell is fantastic. It takes place during the Napoleanic and post Napoleanic times, primarily in England, and it's about two magicians, Jonathon Strange, and Mr. Norrell, and their quest to bring back magic to England. It's really fascinating, and the pacing is different than most books, but it's very well written.
