Hey yall, section 6 is coming along now and unfortunately there will be many delays on future section releases due to summer and the stuff associated with it.

I am planning on naming the Sections, much like chapters. So if you have any suggestion of section/chapter names, please share.

Please note that the portion posted as the teaser can still change on the final post. But it should be pretty close to said final post.

Section 6:
Title:

“I don’t understand. They just found her on the street?” said Ashley as she walked down a white-washed hallway. She took care to walk a step behind Will. She had no idea where she was going. Will had called her only minutes ago to tell her to meet at the hospital.

“Yes.”

“Literally? They literally found her on the street?”

“Yes. Her name is Emily Fisher. She was lying unconscious on the pavement.” Will’s eyes traced the room numbers along the wall. “We can’t say how long she was there. Many people walked by her assuming she was homeless or a beggar or taking a nap. A woman finally called for help only because she noticed a Coach bag on the ground next to her.” Will paused at room 45. “This is us.”

The door was closed. Will moved to open it, but a nurse shook her head through the window, ordering him to stay outside. A girl sat up in the bed and looked to be raving about something as the nurse checked her blood pressure.

“She’s up. That’s good,” said Will.

Ashley pushed will aside to get a view through the window. “Do we know what happened to her?”

“He knocked her out. She doesn’t remember what he did to her, but there’s some bruising on her neck. The doctor thinks a man—an incredibly strong man—applied enough pressure to her carotid artery to make her faint. It’s not easy to do. If he didn’t squeeze hard enough or missed the spot, she would be a very awake, angry girl. If he applied too much pressure, he would have killed her.”

Ashley strained her eyes as she looked through the window, scanning the girl’s neck for a bruise. She couldn’t see it. “How do we know this has anything to do with us?” she asked.

“The officer who found her said she drifted in and out of consciousness on her way to the hospital. Each moment she was awake, she muttered ‘Jacob’ over and over barely loud enough to hear.” Will paused, and they both studied Emily through the window. “Beyond that, we don’t know anything. It’s possible that she’s just a girl who’s been dealing with the wrong people and has another friend named Jacob.” Will checked his watch and looked down at his feet. Unknown to him, they had been tapping since the moment they reached room.

“No. No, it’s not possible.”

The nurse opened the door and showed them in. “Good luck. She’s quite excitable,” she said as they passed.

Emily stared through the window at the end of her room, oblivious to the new visitors. She only moved her head in their direction when Ashley had reached the foot of the bed.

“Who the hell are you two? I already told the police everything,” she said. Her words fell from her lips with hopelessness. Whatever fire the nurse had experienced was beginning to dull.

Will pulled up two chairs from along the wall and they sat down at her bedside.

“No, we’re not police. We just have a few questions,” said Will.

“Can’t you just talk to the other guys and get the story from them?”

“It’s important that we hear it from you.”

Emily closed her eyes and lightly shook her head back and forth. Her body dreaded the thought of reliving her ordeal once more.

Will looked at Ashley. She shrugged and sat up in her chair impatiently. After a few moments, he said, “We understand that you thought you were chasing a friend you saw walking down the street?” He spoke gently, like he was explaining to a classroom how airplanes worked.

“I thought that I was chasing a friend because I was chasing a friend. His name was—” she paused as a tremble went down her arms. “His name is Jacob Ibson.”

“But he didn’t recognize you when you reached him?” Will said. Ashley sat back in her chair with her legs crossed. She showed little interest in what the girl had to say and was happy to let Will ask the questions.

“No. It was him, I know it.” Emily paused and looked down at her hands. “But he wasn’t there. He looked at me as if he had never seen me before. He wouldn’t even respond to his name when I called. I had to physically turn him around to get him to even look at me. That’s when he grabbed my arm.” She shrugged the shoulder of her injured arm and massaged it with her other hand. “I can’t believe how fast he turned around to grab me. It hurt so much. And he just stared straight into my eyes. There was no recognition, no connection. And we’re best friends! I’ve known him since we started university, and he looked at me as if he didn’t know me. The more I think about it the more I think that he—or it—whatever it was, wasn’t my Jacob. My Jacob is gone.”

Will swallowed hard and nodded. He looked at Ashley, but her face remained stolid. She could have been fighting back a yawn.

“And what made him let go?”

Emily’s discomfort became more obvious as she talked. Her eyes would not stay focused on a single space for long, like she was on the lookout for bees that would sting her if she isn’t on her guard.

“A man walked up. It’s all kind of fuzzy from here. I’m not sure what happened, but a man walked up, and somehow that made it—Jacob—turn around. It was like they knew each other.”

Ashley blinked in her chair and took in a quick breath like she was about to say something. Will glanced in her direction, but said nothing.

“Do you remember anything about the man?” said Will.

“No, nothing.”

“Was he tall? Short? Old? Young?”

“He had a huge gash across his face!” she said with sudden fervor. “I forgot that until just now. He was beaten up. It looked like he had been in a horrible fight, maybe a week or so ago.” She stared at the wall in front of the bed. “Yes, that scratch was hideous. It will leave a horrible scar.”

Ashley stood up. “Are we done here?” she said, looking at Will.

“Yes, I think so. Thank you, Emily.” He turned to leave behind Ashley, who was already at the door.

Emily’s eyes followed him out. Before he could leave, she said, “Jacob is gone, isn’t he?” Her cheeks blushed scarlet under her moist eyes as she studied the pair.

Turning around, Ashley said, “I think you know the answer.”

They left the room, leaving Emily alone with nothing to do but think.

Ashley now walked several steps ahead of Will. She had memorized the route out of the hospital. Will had to stride unnaturally down the hallway to catch up to her.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he said.

“There’s no way. I’m telling you, that guy was harmless. And what connects him to this at all? He’s a man? There are many men—many men who are more dangerous than that one.” Her pace did not relent, and she nearly knocked a doctor into the sink while he washed his hands.

“Don’t be unreasonable. He showed an interest in our activities here. He knows who we are. His motivation could very easily have been to protect his killer-abnormal friend. Now is not the time to let your pride interfere—”

“You’re speculating,” she interrupted. She turned down another hallway and continued at her rapid speed. “You don’t know that he cares about us. He was just a weird guy who followed me around. Do you think I haven’t had guys follow me before?”

Ashley stopped walking. The dead-end of the hallway stared back at her. She muttered something under her breath and turned around. She sped past Will.

“He’s all we have!” he yelled after her, opting not to chase her. Ashley stopped. “The case is dry. We have nothing else. We have no more leads, no more crime scenes, no more witnesses. We don’t know how much longer this thing will be here. It has a history of moving. You know that. We need to stop this thing here before it moves to another unsuspecting town and kills more.” Will walked up behind Ashley. “You need to not just allow for the possibility that your stalker is involved. You need to hope with everything you have that your stalker is involved. If he’s not, we’re done. We have nothing else.”

Ashley closed her eyes. “Fine,” she whispered. “Let’s get the hell out of this hospital.”

Question(s) for the readers, followers, and fans. What do yall think is being set up to happen? In your minds eye, what are the events leading up to? As the people behind the story we know the purpose of everything said and we have a clear vision of what is happening. Im curious to what conclusions, what ideas, etcetera are flying through your mind while reading.

Thank You!!

Section 7:
Title: Companionship

The man paced back and forth across the room. Back and forth. His eyes traced the flowers on the hotel room’s wallpaper as they danced along with his steps.

He paused in front of the bedroom door. His eyes narrowed as he stretched the limits of his senses. He heard movement, but it was probably only a spider crawling up the wall. Nothing of concern. Grix was resting, still resting.

Back and forth. He had hardly stopped moving since he met Grix earlier in the day. The rush of adrenaline had yet to cease, and he could still feel his pulse beating through his neck, his thighs, his fingertips. Yes, that was a close one. The girl would never imagine how close she had been to death. Grix was moments away from ripping her arm from her body.

The man had saved her. There was no choice. A screaming girl in the middle of a crowded sidewalk would attract too much attention, and attention didn’t bring the best out of Grix. All that aside, Grix was as likely to attack him as the girl. The recognition he saw in Grix’s face provided a wave of relief. Perhaps allowing the gash from Grix’s bite to remain on his face, and not healing it as he could, gave it some sort of remorse or familiarity that stopped it from lashing out.

Something had changed, and the man knew it. He had traveled with Grix for years. More years than any of those people on the sidewalk this morning would ever see. Grix had always needed to feed, but not like this. There were decades where it would survive on a single meal. During those times it seemed as if it had attained some sort of humanity, a small inkling that ending lives was not something it could do with disregard. Those were the smoothest years.

A chill crawled down the man’s spine. The smoothest years – those were the ones where it didn’t rampantly kill. The man wondered what it all said about him. He knew all along that Grix needed to kill to sustain itself. For whatever the reason, consuming anything but the freshest of kills could not satisfy its needs. The man had simply turned the other way. During the bad spells, he would even ensure that they relocated to a different place before the locals caught on. There were only so many deaths that can be explained by wild dogs or bears or tornadoes before people start to suspect something. He, who appeared so human, had enabled so many deaths, and he still didn’t know why.

Companionship, maybe? His existence flowed like an anonymous stream. He couldn’t remember the beginning, and he couldn’t see the end. Years followed years. He began to understand that he would never be capable of attachment. It was as if he was playing a different game from the world around him. So when he got wind of a string of mysterious deaths all those decades ago, he investigated. Maybe he could find a being that was greater than all the humans and echoed his own isolation.

Back and forth. It was dark outside. The only light in the room came from a lamp in the corner. Everything had an exaggerated shadow that collided with everything else. The man let his eyes rest on the chair before him. The adrenaline from the day had finally begun to wane. He was exhausted, and the chair was a piece of ecstasy. No sound came from the bedroom. Grix was resting, but he didn’t know for how long.

Things were different now. He no longer felt that he knew Grix. He no longer knew if he ever had. About a year ago it all changed. Grix had had gone missing, simply vanishing on day. It had returned with little evidence to be concerned. At first he thought it was another temporary spell. It had happened before. Grix had gone through many stages when it needed to feed more often. The man accepted it and let it pass.

This time, though, it didn’t. After relocating several times over two months, the man made his mistake, one that he would repeat later. He thought he could control Grix and stop him from going out to feed. It almost killed him. The gashes and bites certainly would have killed any other man. Grix left that night and didn’t come back.

Finding it again wasn’t so difficult. He traced the news for stories of bizarre deaths. They took him all over the country, as well as to neighboring countries, and he quickly got frustrated with how many people legitimately die to tree shredders and lawn mowers. Then, there was even a stretch of no reports and all was quiet, as if Grix (and clumsiness) disappeared entirely. Still, he found his way to Oxford in short order. The city revived memories of centuries ago when he was a student – another stir of humanity that he thought was gone.

The chair sat there with open arms, begging him to sleep. It was best that he oblige. Sleep had not come easily, and it was best that he take advantage of an opportunity for rest. The man let his eyes close. He slipped into a dream of a time long ago.

Something, somewhere.

He jumped up from the chair. He focused his senses and quickly isolated the room where Grix slept. He threw open the door and stared at the jagged hole in the window. Grix was nowhere in sight.

Amazing story so far Adam, the background (section 7) was definitely great and added a real human element to the abnormal, giving the impression that it's not necessarily evil but rather acting on instinct and somewhat misunderstood.

The humour is great, I laughed when Ashley was trying to get out of the hospital determined not to admit that she doesn't know the way but finally being forced to submit:
QUOTE (Adamo)
Ashley closed her eyes. “Fine,” she whispered. “Let’s get the hell out of this hospital.”

I can definitely imagine her acting like that (given the mood) in an actual episode of Sanctuary tongue.gif In fact I think you've managed to nail their on-screen personalities in writing perfectly and it's definitely made this fanfic stand out!

I also chuckled when reading this part of the latest section:
QUOTE (Adamo)
He traced the news for stories of bizarre deaths. ... he quickly got frustrated with how many people legitimately die to tree shredders and lawn mowers.

Keep up the excellent work, can't wait to see what's next! biggrin.gif

EDIT:
QUOTE (Adamo)
Question(s) for the readers, followers, and fans. What do yall think is being set up to happen? In your minds eye, what are the events leading up to?

My first impression during section 7 was that Grix was looking for a mate or something along those lines, but that was quickly dismissed about halfway through the section when the 'caretaker' mentioned it. After reading it again I noticed that there's no reference to the gender of Grix, of course that may just be because it is more of a monster and therefore the gender is insignificant or it could be that Grix is actually female (I know, im grasping at threads here tongue.gif). Anyway, going on that I thought that perhaps Grix is pregnant, of course I have no idea how or why but it sort of makes sense that now she's eating for two instead of one.

There are some other things which I feel have significance but am not quite sure how, such as the van which almost runs over Ashley's tailer in section 1 and another (or perhaps the same ohmy.gif) van appearing during Grix's attack in section 3 (although perhaps you just like vans tongue.gif). Either way, I am definitely looking forward to what's to come.
