I have been debating on how to mention this because it sounds too weird. I will go with the short story....having lost almost -40 lbs recently, I noticed my left thigh was larger than my right...thought it was a muscle...something wrong with it perhaps....went to the DR (something very rare for me), and turns out it is a lipoma...a fatty tumor. They are usually small and can form anywhere, but basically a fat that has been encapsulated (think of a balloon full of fat). The body can't use it or absorb it like normal fat...meaning I can't just diet this thing off.

Since I have been overweight for as long as I have, and it was unnoticeable, it has grown quite large, and they recommend surgery. I met on Tuesday with the surgeon.

As much as I have dieted over the years I have never heard of this before....sounds almost like a joke doesn't it? Fat you can't diet away? I honestly thought it was a muscle....was afraid to go have the DR look at it for fear he would laugh at the fat woman that didn't know what a muscle was...instead the fat woman didn't know what FAT was!

I am trying to be positive, but admit a little scared. I told family that until they get this out and weigh it, I am sticking by my story that it weighs at least 20 lbs....whatever it weighs, I will be that much closer to goal!

And no, they can't do liposuction on it, they have to get the full thing out or it will just regrow, they are slow growing, so it is possible I have had it a LONG time. And no...being overweight doesn't cause them....it just was able to hide out longer.

As I said, I am staying positive and continuing on my healthy eating plan and exercise (going to get as much in as I can before the surgery...since I expect I will have some recovery time). :injured:

Thanks....I will keep everyone posted...I have so much going on this next month (getting DD off to college, getting ready for back to school with DS and for me (sub teacher), a visit from my half brother I never met before....), that I don't know how this will all work out if they want to do the surgery ASAP. Guess there is never a good time for surgery.

Had the meeting with the specialist, he confirms what this should be, although always that small possibility it could be worse, but they won't know until it is out, but it is a very small possibility and would just mean watching it closer.
And good news, he said no problem on waiting until Sept. This gives me time to get DD off to college and the visit with the half brother, just means I will lose some work days, but he said I should be up in no time!
I will have a LONG incision, pretty much the length of my thigh. Oh well....Laura

September 5th...outpatient surgery! Hoping to get another -10 lb off before then....I can work at it anyway. I told my DS (10) that this will probably only weigh 3 lbs, but he said "well, that is still something right?". Yep...guess he is right! Lori
