Wish lands teen battling cancer in Nashville

During her battle with ovarian cancer, Rathynia Buttermore has focused on a dream.

“In my dreams at night, I’m singing a song I’ve written,” said the Massillon Middle School student who has loved performing since she appeared in Emerson Elementary’s talent show in second grade.

This week, the dream materialized.

Rathynia took the stage at the Country Music Association’s Fan Fare in Nashville. Make that the Ryman Auditorium stage, Nashville’s premier performance hall ... former home to the Grand Ole Opry ... the stage that has hosted the likes of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, Keith Urban and Coldplay.

“I sang a song I know by heart, ‘When There Was You and Me’ from Disney’s ‘High School Musical,’” Rathynia said, “and I thought, ‘Billy was holding this same microphone and singing into it, oh my gosh.’”

That’s Billy Gilman, the focus of Rathynia’s musical devotion since age 7.

“I love his music,” she said, “and I love his looks and his eyes. His eyes make me melt.”

Rathynia’s wish to meet her idol came true courtesy of Wishes Can Happen, a Stark County nonprofit organization that makes memories happen in a big way for local children ages 3-21 who have a life-threatening illness.

She spent an entire day with Gilman – lunching, autograph signings, a concert, backstage – but there was also the thrill of meeting country superstars Darryl Worley, Aaron Tippin, Lila McCann, John Rich from Big & Rich and others. She also attended a private party with Jason Aldean, who recently won the Academy of Country Music award for top new male vocalist, and is attending a late-night party where she’ll rub elbows with glittering greats like Wynonna Judd.

Rathynia is staying at the huge Opryland Resort and Hotel with her mom, Nora Cowart; sister Cheyenne; and friend Tiffany Reich.

“Tiffany and I made a recording, ‘My Baby Loves Me,’ by Martina McBride,’” Rathynia said. “We had so much fun doing that and got to keep the CD from it.”

“This is the most wonderful wish we’ve done in a while,” said Madelyn Sweeney, community relations director and wish coordinator for the all-volunteer organization. “The generosity of our community is so heartwarming with everyone wanting to help.”

Restaurants donated meals. A man in line overheard Rathynia’s trip plans and pulled some spending money out of his pocket. A store donated a digital camera. A limousine pulled up to her house at 5:45 a.m. for a gratis ride to the airport in style.

People in Nashville have been equally giving.

A store cashier who learned Rathynia’s story bought Billy Gilman merchandise for the family. A restaurant served up a special dinner and threw in the cab fare to and from. The hotel paid a driver to retrieve the family’s forgotten cell phone.

“Numerous restaurants and attractions in a city so far away have donated to Rathynia,” Sweeney said, “well, it just restores your faith in the goodness of people.”

And as for Rathynia, she said, “this girl is freaking out with happiness.”

“I never imagined this could happen,” said Rathynia, for the first time since her chemotherapy going sans hats and scarves. “I love it.”

“For Rathynia, this is a dream come true,” her mother said. “I can’t believe this is actually happening for her.”

Although doctors have yet to utter the word “remission,” Cowart is confident it’s in the offing.

“In my heart, I know it’s done,” she said of her young daughter’s ordeal. “I know she’s going to be OK, that God is taking care of her. I’m so proud of her for being so strong.”
