Hi all!

I've offered to run a thread here that I do in one of my other groups, posting what happens in Middle-earth and when. I list events from The Hobbit as well as LotR.

They are listed according to our Gregorian Calendar, not converted for a 30-day month as Middle-earth runs. Therefore there will be a few posts that will say 'on this day that doesn't occur in our calendar) for things like Feb 29, & 30 and the Lithe days between June & July. But it keeps Bilbo & Frodo's birthdays on Sept 22, and that's what we're pretty much used to.

So, keep an eye peeled for happenings in a few days!

-Dora Took :hobbit lass: :sewing:

BTW, if you'd like to post favorite quotes pertaining to the days entry.. I'm sure we'd all love to read them :journal:

:green_door: So it was this day eh? Interesting to think about. For me, that is where the quest begins, and for many readers who begin their journey into the world of Middle-Earth by first reading The Hobbit. It seems like ages ago since I first picked up a copy of The Hobbit and began reading.

Debbie, I believe the trip from Rivendell (passing through Lórien and remaining there a while) took a little longer than that? Setting out in May, they wouldn't arrive in Minas Tirith until just before Midsummer.

But, isn't King Elessar Telcontar also Aragorn? If so, how could Elrond & Arwen be at his crowning if their travels would take weeks?

I must investigate this further! :clue:

They did not get married on May 1st, they got married on Mid-Year's Day.

(( meaning Aragorn and Arwen, not speaking about Sam and Rosie :) ))

uh... they weren't there! You're confusing the movie and the book. As Undomiel and WLE have said, The Elf contingent won't arrive until Mid-summer for the wedding (which was NOT the same day as the coronation. Remember: Aragorn has to find the sapling as a token that he is 'approved' first). The Contingent will also stop in Lorien to pick up the granparents, and also in Rohan. So they take the scenic route.

Interesting. I am re-reading the hobbit and Bilbo just lost his brass buttons escaping the lair of the goblins. It seems I am reading in time with their adventures.

how fun! And in my Shield-maiden journeying, I'm just a little behind the book: I've just been captured by the Goblins and am about to stand there while Thorin gets questioned (so I'm a couple days out from finding the ring! it's amazing how many miles Bilbo spends in the tunnels! It was a fast 6 miles down with whips at their heels, another 11 miles of them running away, a mile before Bilbo finds the ring and then 8.5 miles to reach Gollum's lake!!!)

What is "clotted cream" anyway? Is that the same things as cottage cheese, or maybe yogurt? I thought "curds and whey" was another name for cottage cheese...?

Clotted cream is a thick yellow cream made by heating unpasteurized cow's milk and then leaving it in shallow pans for several hours. During this time, the cream content rises to the surface and forms 'clots'.

When it coagulates, milk separates into a semisolid portion (curd) and a watery liquid (whey). Curds may be best described as condensed milk fat that has not yet aged into cheese. The most popular form of curds consumed in the United States is cottage cheese, which is fresh curds combined with cream, sour cream, or milk. Greek feta cheese is essentially fresh salted curds preserved in whey, the watery liquid that comes with every jar or package of feta. Whey is used to produce ricotta and brown cheeses and many other products for human consumption. It is also an additive in many processed foods, including breads, crackers and commercial pastry, and in animal feed.

Further to Ashlyn's very correct and accurate answer about clotted cream: it is most like a very rich, thick, and VERY delicious form of whipped cream, spooned atop split scones with fresh strawberries sweetened with a little bit of sugar or honey, or with fruit preserves. This is what you usually get when you order a cream tea in England. Hobbits probably ate something like it, and they would certainly love it!

yup: 10 min. Interestingly, when honey combines with body fluids (like a in a cut) it has a reaction creating something like hydrogen peroxide! so it draws any infection and holds it in the honey. That's why you have to rinse it off. apparently a bunch of Australian scientists were studying properties of honey a number of years ago and this made the news.

Useful stuff, honey; and it tastes good, too! But not licked off one's cuts, one hopes! (Eeew!)

Did anyone out there see the Last Comic Standing tv competition this week? One of the comics pointed out the problems with the "romantic" image of covering one's sweetheart with honey and then licking it off. She'll fall asleep long before you're done, he said, and you'll go into diabetic shock! Not MY idea of a good time, either, but he did get a big laugh from the audience. :P

dunno. It's possible. the book doesn't discuss it. But you figure: since Dain has been running things and Bard's son & grandson have brought life back to Dale.. relations with Mirkwood I thought had gotten a bit easier - at least not quite as antagonistic. Since Gloin & Gimli have to walk through Mirkwood to get to Rivendell, and Leggy was coming from there, it might have been sensible for all to walk together.

but perhaps things weren't quite as friendly, considering the comment Gloin made in Council, although it was but a momentary flash, and he immediately apologized for it (after Gandalf chided him). Huh, I wonder!

A very good friend of mine may be having her baby today, and I warned her about the significance of 'it was dark in the dell under Weathertop.' ;) Part of me will be very amused if this does turn out to be the kid's birthday - at least I'll never forget it!

Edit: Baby was indeed born on Oct. 6th, and both mother and baby are doing well. The girl's name is 'Elena', so of course I explained to the mom that 'elen' is the poetic elvish word for star ;).

LoL! That's great, Judy!

Legolas left Mirkwood after the escape of Gollum, and the dwarves left the Lonely Mountain after Sauron's emissary visited them for the last time, if that helps to place them. They were both present at the feast, of course, and had not *just* arrived in Rivendell that day.

TA3019 Returning party reach Bree at nightfall

-Dora Took :hobbit lass: :sewing:

Mithluin: according the the Atlas (Fonstad), it's maybe a couple months journey from Erebor to Rivendell - so they should have left maybe in August sometime? Might be around 6 days or so to get from Erebor to Thranduil's. Gollum escapes on June 20, they spent some time searching for him, but it would should take the better part of 1.5 months to get to Rivendell from Thranduil's. at least based on the amount of time it took Bilbo & Gandalf (riding) to return and not adding in wintering at Beorn's.

Actually, while we do know that Gimli & Gloin were at the feast, and therefore had been at Rivendell at least a day before.. we don't truly know that Leggy was at the feast - he's never placed, so he may have arrived that morning, but no reason why he couldn't have been earlier.

:clue: Did you know there were hidden treasures at ALEP?

They were hidden in the website, and only the most expert of treasure hunters would have ever discovered them. Here’s an example:

:gold cup: The Two-Handled Gold Cup

If you looked on Bilbo’s desk and passed the mouse over the small key on the keychain, you would see that it was a link to another page (if you leave the mouse on it, it says ’I am the key to a clue’). Click it and it leads to a mysterious stone room with a piece of parchment with a dragon (clue #1) and runes on it. After a little research, one could find that they are Anglo-Saxon runes and, once deciphered, they form a riddle:

There is a head and a tale and even a flagon
This treasure rests under a most fearsome dragon
A treasure like this can be quite hard to find
Keep your eyes open and watch for a sign

The 1st line reinforces the notion of a dragon with head and tail. A flagon seems to make one think of a pub. Can you think of a pub or tavern at ALEP?

The 2nd line just plain tells you it’s a dragon you should be looking for, yet it also notes that you need to look under it.

The 3rd line states that it may require some looking indeed.

The 4th line tells you to watch for a sign. Can you think of a sign with a dragon on it at ALEP?

If you thought of the Green Dragon sign, you would be correct! If you looked under the sign itself, you would have found a small compartment with a note in it.
Once opened the note read:

Congratulations expert treasure hunter! You just discovered the 2-Handled Gold Cup! Take this note to Gandalf to collect your prize.

Once brought to me, I would have given you the cup (which was in a locked box in a secret place) and recognized you at the awards ceremony as well as an outstanding expert treasure hunter.

If there is ever another ALEP, keep a sharp eye and wits about you, for there were other treasures to be had much greater than a golden cup.

Oh, that was very sneaky.

Now we know to be more observant next time around. Very nice touch. I wish I had figured that out as I do like to follow clues like that, and once I read the verse, the first thing I thought of was the Green Dragon sign.

Oh well, there's always next time.

There will be a next time, at some point in the future, right? Oh, I do hope so.

:map:
Yes, the idea even crossed my mind to make these 'hidden treasures' more evident, but that would take all of the fun out of it ~ for me anyway. Of all of you, only Sam & Pippin came forth and simply noted that they had studied the riddles, but they never went any further so far as I know. Too bad; I could see them as being ‘treasure hunters’.
:chest:
I do love things of this nature, but I think I may have overstepped my boundaries with the 'public' treasure hunt. I was in dread that I had doomed someone to wander the paths of the Old Forest forever and I also put some of the treasures perhaps a bit too far out in the wilderness. Still, I was curious just how far people would go to claim a treasure. Some of you were quite resourceful and found treasures without so much as a map. Curious.
Well, that will not happen again, at least in the trackless forests of Shaker Woods, but I do not expect we have seen the last of the lost treasures of the Village (and some are still there). If anything, there will be more if there is a next time, for those clever enough to find it.
:rosie:
As for you, Rosie, you would have been a eligible as any as you didn’t know of my little secret (as far as I know). Hobbits, of all folk, should take riddles more seriously.

Oh, my! How clever of you, Gandalf! (And those of you who actually figured the clues out, too!) I guess that's the way a wizard's mind works, though; always seeking the hidden meaning of things, and encouraging others to do the same! :gandalfgrey:

Next time, I'll have to keep my eyes open! Who know what interesting little secrets may be waiting to be uncovered?

Perhaps the word arrested should have been in quotation marks. *grin*

I know that Peter Jackson had his own reasons for not wanting to even film "The Scouring of the Shire", but it is one of my favorite parts of the books. I love seeing the Hobbits taking the things that they have learned and become and using them to benefit their people.

I knew a 5th grade teacher once (not mine) who taught LotR in school. She felt the entire book was basically a long build-up to the Battle of Bywater! That the young hobbits needed to grow and and learn more about themselves and what they can do, so they could come home and be adults (and do what needed to be done). Interesting view.

I'd like to think that the Hobbits, at least, even though it was not written in the book, got to do at least a little bit of Yule celebrating before they hit the road. Even though elves apparently don't celebrate the Winter Solstice/Yule, Elrond's hospitality is described as such that I figure that he would have done something for the Hobbits...

Happy Christmas to all!

Yes, Dora; it's good of you to keep up with the postings of momentous Middle-earth happenings. With the way the movies condensed the time-frame, the daily updates are a great reminder of just how long the Quest actually took.

Here in southeastern Michigan we didn't get much snow (just a dusting in Detroit), Bramblerose, but it is COLD! When I logged on a few minutes ago, the temperature was only 10. At least it's sunny. Spring will be so very welcome this year!

Yes, a Very Happy New Year to all fellow Tolkien enthusiasts!
And I hope you all get to celebrate in some manner as today is also Tolkien REading Day!
My local group, "Tolkien_Forever" is having a TRD dinner this evening where we will read passages to each other.
Then on Saturday, we're holding our 4th annual public Tolkien Reading Day event at a nearby library! We'll wear our Middle-earth costumes and provide LOTR-themed coloring pages for the kids, some live musical interludes, and lots of readings. Its a 3-hour event. Then we all pile over to a favorite local restaurant for dinner; some of us still in costume. The restaurant seems to enjoy a visit from a troop of elves, hobbits and rangers! (We hobbits tend to be good tippers, so maybe that's why they're glad to see us!)

Happy New Year, indeed! I'll be beginning another Middle-earth journey with The Hobbit again tonight. I no longer remember how many times I've read these books, but since my first encounter with Tolkien's works was in the late 1960s and I've read them all, especially LOTR, at least once a year and on occasion as often as 10 times a year since, it's WELL over a hundred times by now. How splendid a world the Professor envisioned, that there is always some new insight or unexpected (or long-anticipated) moment of joy or wonder waiting in those pages, even after all these years! :map: The Road truly goes ever on....
