I have made a timeline for parts of ASOIAF and perhaps it will help people with ideas, so i am going to post it here. It is not complete at all, for instance I do not have Robert's rebellion there at all, but it is a start
If you want to help me create the more or less complete timeline just PM me what year and what happened and I will put it in here... Thanks to Ran and www.Westeros.org, where most of this information comes from. And by the way, IT WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS (would be pretty difficult to make a timeline without spoilers |

Year before cirka -12000: Dawn Age
In the Dawn Age, Westeros is inhabited by the fairy-like Children of the Forest, and possibly by Giants in the far North. Year cirka -12000: The First Men About 12,000 years ago, the First Men come to Westeros from the Eastern Continent, via a land bridge then connecting the two land masses. The First Men introduce bronze, leather shields, and horses. After initial fights, which include the destruction of the land bridge, they reconcile with the Children. Year cirka -8000: The Long Night At the time of a terrible winter that seems to last for a generation a demonic race called the Others invade from the north and nearly destroy all men in Westeros. The Others are finally defeated at the Battle of the Dawn by the men of the Night's Watch. Perhaps this is the time when the Wall is built, a giant fortification in the north of the continent protecting the continent from the menaces of the north. Year cirka -6000: The Andals Another tribe of men, the Andals, invade Westeros with steel weapons and a new religion, the Seven. They fight both the First Men and the Children of the Forest, finally extinguishing the latter everywhere south of the Wall. After centuries of fighting, the Andals establish six kingdoms in the south, while the north remains in the hands of the First Men. Year cirka -700: Queen Nymeria and Dorne The Rhoynar, led by Queen Nymeria, land in Dorne, the southern part of Westeros, and mix with the Dornish. The Rhoynar bring no greater political turmoil, though the southernmost kingdoms are heavily influenced by their customs, including equal primogeniture. Year cirka -100: The Doom of Valyria The Doom destroys the freehold of Valyria. Year cirka 1: The Wars of Conquest Aided by his three dragons Vhagar, Meraxes, and Balerion, the armies of Aegon the Conqueror invade the seven kingdoms of Westeros, sparking the Wars of Conquest. In the battle known as the "Field of Fire," Aegon's army conquers the combined forces of the Rock and of the Reach; the three dragons kill nearly four thousand men. Many other kings bend the knee to Aegon, and in the end, only Dorne in the South remains unconquered. Year cirka 131: The Dance of the Dragons Aegon II's claim to the throne is disputed by his elder sister Rhaenyra; both perish in the resulting war. Year cirka 143: A future King is born Daeron I is born. Year cirka 157: Conquest of Dorne Aged 14, Daeron I conquers Dorne, but is unable to hold it. Year 170: A bastard is born Daemon Blackfyre is born. His father is Aegon IV and his mother is Daena Targaryen, sister, betrothed, and (briefly) wife to King Baelor the Blessed. Baelor never consummated the marriage. Year 172: A bastard is born Aegor Rivers is born, later known as Bittersteel. His father is Aegon IV and his mother is Lady Barbra Bracken. Year 175: A bastard is born Brynden Rivers is born, he will be known as Bloodraven later. His father is Aegon IV and his mother is Lady Mylessa Blackwood. Year 184: the death of King Aegon IV King Aegon IV, best known as Aegon the Unworthy, left the realm in a legacy of turmoil. The father of many bastards, he legitimised them all on his death bed. Daemon was placed above the rest and given the sword Blackfyre, the ancestral Valyrian weapon of the Targaryen kings. Daemon took the last name of Blackfyre after the sword. Also his two twin sons are born, Aegon and Aemon Blackfyre. It was King Aegon’s son Daeron who succeeded Aegon IV, however. His claim was based on his legitimacy, although some rumoured that he was in fact the son of Aegon’s brother, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight. He became known as Daeron the Good due to his wise rule. Between year 185 and 200: Rebellion in the North Skagos rebels against their lords, the house of Starks. It takes many years and a Lord of Winterfell before the rebellions is quelled. More or less at the same time there is a King-Beyond-the-Wall who threatens the Seven Kingdoms. His name was Raymun Redbeard. Gathering the wildlings to him, he and his reavers scaled the Wall and threw down ropes for thousands of wildlings to climb over. This was done without alerting the brothers of the Night’s Watch, whose guard had grown lax; the Lord Commander of the time was afterwards remembered as Sleepy Jack. Raymun and his host reached the shores of the Long Lake and there they met their end, caught between Lord Willam of Winterfell and the Drunken Giant, Harmond Umber. Raymun was slain by Artos the Implacable, the younger brother of Lord Willam. The Night’s Watch arrived too late to fight the wildlings; instead, Artos Stark gave the Watch the task of burying them as he grieved over the headless corpse of his brother, Willam. Year 196: The battle of Redgrass Field In the 12th year of Daeron’s reign Daemon Blackfyre rebelled. Half the realm followed the black dragon of Daemon’s banner and the other half Daeron’s red dragon. At the Redgrass Field, a pitched battle took place to determine who would hold the Iron Throne. During the course of that battle, Daemon Blackfyre and his two eldest sons, the twins Aegon and Aemon were slain. His remaining sons and his half-brother Bittersteel, another of Aegon’s legitimised bastards, fled to the Free Cities. They take with them the valyrian sword Blackfyre. Year 205: the Vulture King and the feud between the Blackwoods and Brackens Old Lord Dondarrion and Lord Caron drove the Vulture King out of the Red Mountains and killed him for treason. There were some eight hundred knights and nearly four thousand foot with them. The feud between the Brackens and the Blackwoods was reinvigorated when Ser Otho Bracken, called the Brute of Bracken, killed Lord Quentyn Blackwood in a tourney at King's Landing. Lord Bloodraven was considered unlikely to put a halt to the private war between the Blackwoods and Brackens. In fact, he was a Blackwood on his mother's side and was thought capable of assisting his cousins against the hated Brackens Year 208: The tourney at Ashford The tournament was arranged by Lord Ashford in honour of his daughter, who reigned as Queen of Love and Beauty and was defended by five champions. The tournament itself came to be overshadowed by the trial by Seven that developed out of a confrontation between Duncan the Tall and Prince Aerion Brightfire, resulting in the death of crown prince Baelor Breakspear. The stroke that killed him came from his own brother, although Prince Maekar claimed he never meant it. Another result of the trial was that Prince Maekar of Summerhall sent his son Aerion Brighfire away to Lys and The Seven free cities. It was also decided that Aegon Targaryen, youngest son of Maekar, was to serve the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall as a squire. The branch of the green apple Fossoways was founded by Raymun Fossoway after his disagreement with his kinsman, Ser Steffon, over which side they should support in the trial by seven. Raymun Fossoway supported Ser Duncan The Tall and Ser Steffon supported Aerion Brightfire. Year 209: The Great Spring Sickness and the death of Daerion II There were tens of thousands who died during the spring time to a mysterious and deadly sickness often called the grey plauge or the spring sickness. Daerion II was one of the sickness many victims, togheter with Baelor Breakspear's sons, Valarr and Matarys, and his brother Rhaegar Targaryen. Dorne closed it ports during the sickness and thereby sparing itself from the plague. Oldtown also closed it ports and gates, but this was done to keep the sickness inside the city. Half of Oldtowns population died and the survivors killed Lord Quenton Hightower when the plauge was over. Bloodraven ordered the pyromancers to burn the many bodies that had collected in the Dragonpit during the Great Spring Sickness. The light of their wildfire could be seen as a glow throughout the city during the night The bookish Aerys ascended to The Iron Throne, and immidiately made Brynden Rivers his Hand. This made Prince Maekar angry, who retreatet to Summerhall. Year 211: The end of the terrible Drought After the Great Spring Sickness, the summer following brought a drought that lasted nearly two years and displaced thousands of smallfolk, most who disobeyed edicts to return to their lands. Half of the wells in The Reach were dry and left all the rivers, even The Mander, running low. The drought also damaged grape crops in The Arbor. The reavings to The ironborn was extremely fierce under the auspices of Lord Dagon Greyjoy. They sacked many coastal towns, including The Fair Island and The Arbor. Many blamed the drought on King Aerys and his Hand, Brynden Rivers (more commonly known as Lord Bloodraven), because of his status as a kinslayer. Lord Bracken was dying a slow death, while his eldest son died of the plague during the Great Spring Sickness. This left Ser Otho, the Brute of Bracken, as heir, a situation which could mean war as the Blackwoods hated him. There are also rumours that Aerion is still somewhere in The Seven Free Cities, and that Aegon Targaryen squires for Ser Duncan The Tall. Year 221: The death of King Aerys I Aerys I die under unknown circumstances and Maekar becomes King. Year 222: A lord is born Jon Arryn is born. Year 232: The death of Daeron Targaryen, Prince of Summerhall Prince Daeron dies of some disease he got from a whore. Daeron leaves a feeblewitted daughter as his heir. Aemon Targaryen who has served as a Maester to Daeron, travels back to The Citadel. Year 233: The death of Maekar I, and the assembly of The Great Council A year after his son’s death Maekar I is killed by an outlaw lord. With no clear succession the Great Council was convened to decide who should rule. Maester Aemon refused the throne because of his vows. They passed over Aerion's infant son for fear of madness and Daeron's lackwit daughter. This left Prince Aegon, thereafter Aegon V who was known as Aegon the Unlikely. Year 237: A knight is born Barristan Selmy is born, his father is Ser Lyonel Selmy of Harvest Hall. Year 242: A lord is born Hoster Tully is born. Year 244: A lord is born Tywin Lannister is born. Year 247: A tourney at Blackhaven Barristan Selmy won the name of "the Bold" in his 10th year when he donned borrowed armor to appear as a mystery knight at a tourney in Blackhaven, where he was defeated and unmasked by Ducan, Prince of Dragonflies. Year 253: The Winter tourney at King's Landing and a hero is knighted Barristan Selmy was knighted in his 16th year by King Aegon V Targaryen after performing great feats of prowess as a mystery knight in the winter tourney at King's Landing, defeating Prince Duncan the Small and Ser Duncan the Tall, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Between year 254 and 260: War of the ninepenny kings A pact between a motley company of sellswords, pirates, and an ambitious merchant led to great troubles in the Free Cities and even the Seven Kingdoms. They were known as the Band of Nine, and they swore together to carve out a kingdom for each of them. Convinced to begin where they were strongest by the wealthy merchant lord Alequo Adarys, called the Goldentongue, they overran the Disputed Lands and sacked Tyrosh. With their victory they set up the Goldentongue as its tyrant. Next, they conquered the Stepstones. After this, the Band set its eyes on the Seven Kingdoms, for Maelys the Monstrous — the last of the Blackfyre Pretenders and captain of the celebrated Golden Company — laid claim to it. Maelys was a madman who had slain his own kin. He was horrible to look upon — it was said he had devoured his twin while in the womb, resulting in his huge upper body and a small second head growing from his neck. He and his companions captured the Stepstones and intended to use it as a waypost to the Seven Kingdoms, but the Targaryens responded swiftly. Ser Barristan Selmy slew Maelys the Monstrous on the Stepstones, ending the Band’s ambitions towards the Iron Throne. Within half a year, the Band lost the Stepstones and the Disputed Lands as well, but Alequo Adarys lingered on in Tyrosh for six more years. Year 256: A lord is born Mace Tyrell is born. Year 258: A new Grand Maester and a Lady is born: The new Grand maester appointed by Aegon V is Pycelle, and Elia Martell is born. Year 259: Summerhall burns and the Death of Aegon V and Ser Duncan the Tall Year 260: A new brother of the Kingsguard Barristan Selmy was named to the Kingsguard in his 23rd year by Lord Commander Ser Gerold Hightower. Year 261: A lord is born Brandon Stark is born. Year 263: A lord is born Eddard Stark is born. Year 264: A lady is born Lady Catelyn Tully is born. Year 265: A lady is born Lady Lysa Tully is born. Year 266: A future queen and a future kingslayer is born Cersei and Jaime Lannister are born. Also the man who will later be knowned as "Littlefinger" is born, Lord Petyr Baelish. Year 267: A lord dies and a feared knight is born Tytos Lannister dies, and Ser Gregor Clegane is born. Between Year 270-75: The Duskendale defiance and a lady is born Year 272: A lord is born Edmure Tully is born Year 277: A lord is born Lord Renly Baratheon is born Year 281: The year of the False Spring and The Great tournament at Harrenhall Having won the tournament, Prince Rhaegar laid the winter rose crown of the queen of beauty in Lyanna's lap rather than that of his wife, the Dornish Princess Elia. The only Starks present at Harrenhal were Brandon, Eddard, Lyanna, and Benjen. This action, which caused some scandal, was taken poorly by those who might be concerned about Rhaegar's intentions towards Lyanna Stark. At the same tournament Ser Jamie Lannister becomes the youngest knight to ever wear the white cloak of the Kingsguard, at age fifteen. He replaces old Ser Harlan Grandison, who passed away in his sleep. Year 283: The War of the Usurper starts The War of the Usurper also known as Robert's Rebellion, began when Brandon Stark, the heir to Winterfell, rode into the Red Keep shouting for Prince Rhaegar to come out and die. King Aerys had Brandon arrested for wanting to murder the crown prince, and summoned Rickard Stark, Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North to King’s Landing to answer for his son’s treason. Aerys’ had Lord Rickard burned alive while Brandon Stark was forced to watch and strangled himself to death with a device from Tyrosh. Also killed by Targaryen forces were two hundred of Lord Stark’s best men. Along with the Starks, Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, and Elbert Arryn (nephew and heir of Lord Jon Arryn of the Vale) were accused of treason, and when their fathers came to King’s Landing to answer for their sons’ indiscretions, they were all killed. When Aerys demanded the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark from their host, Lord Jon Arryn of the Vale, the three houses raised their banners in revolt. |

Hi Tom and Hi everyone,
Thanks for your timeline. If you allow me just a few observations on the time of the “Blackfyre rebellion”. I made some kind of general timeline myself, having decided to start a campaign at this era (using mostly the great ideas of Maester Luwin. May the Seven and the Old Gods bless him for his amazing work! I think the Four Bastards can’t be that young since Daemon is “considerably older than 16 or 17” at the Redgrass Field (according to GRR Martin’s description of Daemon on Amok site when he had to make his portrait.) Furthermore, Daemon is killed with one of is twins who is already a [young] knight at that time. So personally I’ve decided that Daemon was born in 161 – first year of Baelor’s reign – so that he was 35 when he died and his twins were around 16-18 at the same period) Just my few comments. I hope it will help Good luck because it’s always complex when it deals with timeline and consistency. Ser Lyonel |

I totally see your point, I have taken the years from a discussion on the westeros.org board. I do not remember all the details from it...
though they can not be to old either, remember that Bloodraven lives quite a while after 233, after your calculations he would be around sixty when he becomes Lord commander of the wall, not impossible but not probable either...??? |

I can see your point too, Tom!
Bloodraven would be pretty old as a Lord Commander... Trying to make this timeline showed me that we had to make choices... because one way or the other there is always a problem. But I guess we can't ask GRR Martin to be as precise as computer |

A few points.
Daemon Blackfyre is given the sword Blackfyre on his 12th birthday. Blackfyre's twin sons (Aegon and Aemon) are squires for him at Redgrass Field. They are probably not that old, maybe 12-13 at the most. The Hedge Knight takes place in early 209, a few months before Daeron II dies, not 208. Barristan Selmy is born in 237, the son (probably not the eldest) of Ser Lyonel Selmy of Harvest Hall. He is knighted in 253 and named to the Kingsguard in 260. Jaehaery's eldest son and heir, Prince Duncan the Small, also dies in the Tragedy of Summerhall. Prince Rhaegar Taragaryen is born during the Tragedy. Elia Martell is born in 258, making it likely that Prince Oberyn is born in 256 or thereabouts. The War of the Ninepenny Kings was most likely around 255, certainly before Barristan Selmy became a Kingsguard. The Defiance of Duskendale was most likely in the mid-270s (275-276 would be my guess). King Aerys II was taken prisoner when he tried to storm the town after Lord Denys Darklyn refused to pay extra taxes to King's Landing (Ser Gwayne Gaunt of the Kingsguard was killed by Ser Symon Hollard, Denys' captain of the guard). He was held prisoner for six months whilst Tywin besieged the town. Finally, Ser Barristan Selmy slipped into the castle, killed Ser Symon Hollard and rescued King Aerys. This was the incident that allegedly sent Aerys mad. He had every member of House Darklyn killed and the castle transferred to the loyal House Rykker. Symon Hollard's young son Dontos was sent to King's Landing as a squire after Ser Barristan Selmy took pity on him. Robert Baratheon was born in 264, Stannis in 265 and Renly in 277, based on their ages given in the novels. Lord Stefford Baratheon and Lady Cassana died in a shipwreck on Shipbreaker's Bay, likely in 278 or 279. Stefford Baratheon was likely born in the 230s. He was the son of Aegon V's daughter Rhaelle. 281 was also the Year of False Spring and the year that the Kingsguard led a force against the Kingswood Brotherhood, where Ser Arthur Dayne killed their leader. Jaime Lannister distinguished himself in the battle and was knighted. Ser Emmett Frey was wounded in the head and forced to abandon his life as a warrior. |

Are you sure on those birthdates for Baratheon boys? Eddard was 35 at the time of AGoT and we're told Robert is older than he is by a little (I'm guessing 1-2 years). I believe AGoT starts in 298 so the 264 date wouldn't work. I'd put Robert late 261/early 262, Stannis 263, and Renly 276/277.
Also, I thought Duncan the Small was likely Egg's son but GRRM was holding off on anything definitive until revealed in Dunk & Egg novels? Same with Rhaegar, its a theory he was born in the Tragedy but it also may only have led to the events which led to his birth. |

Have updated the timeline a little, most of it has to do with Barristan Selmy. Thanks to Werthead for the information. I am aware of many of your other remarks, and I will look further into them when I get the time.

I think Robert's age is specifically mentioned somewhere, which then gives us Stannis age, but I don't have the references to hand. I may have gotten that info incorrect (feels ASoIaF reread coming on). Renly's age is specifically mentioned as 21 I believe in either AGoT and ACoK (ACoK takes place across most of 299, so that may make his birth in 278 rather than 277 though).

Yes, Renly is specifically said to be 21. I've read AGoT 5 times now and searched westeros.org thoroughly with no luck to finding Robert's exact age (not saying it isn't there just that I've diligently searched for it with no luck). The closest I've found is in AGoT Catelyn contemplates having more children and remarks that Eddard is 35, still young enough for one more child in her mind. Later (and I can't remember where) someone notes that Robert was older than Eddard, but only slightly. It may have been Stannis who mentioned this. Then (ACoK I believe) it is stated that Stannis was 1 year younger than Robert. Going off of this I would say Robert is 36, possibly 37. So that's where I get my 261 or 262 at the latest, with Stannis being 1 yr later. Renly would obviously be 277, unless of course, as you said, we are given that age in ACoK. Then its 278. I'll have to re-read Maester Cressen's part in ACoK. There might be more info there.

Updated the timeline again. Have added Gregor Clegane's, Petyr Baelish's and Brandon Stark's births, in addition to Renly Baratheon's. For the time being I went with 277 for Renly. Also adjusted the birth years for Catelyn and Lysa Tully, not sure if Edmure Tully's birth year is correct. Added some text here and there.
There are some troubles with Brandon's and Eddard's age. Some information tells us that Brandon was twenty when he died, maiking him eighteen at the tourney at Harrenhall. The same age Eddard supposedly is at the same tournament. Other information tells us that Brandon was twenty at the tournament at Harrenhall, making him a couple of years older than Eddard. I went for the last one. |
