Title: Hunting in AGOT

Did anyone happen to archive the 'Hunting Chart' that appeared once in the old GoO forums? Or is the author signed up in these forums and able to reprint the charts maybe?

Unfortunatly not. It was one I wanted to transfer over, but the site went down before I was able to. :(

Sorry.

Maybe someone has a different one or something similar?

There was a Hunting chart? (I really kinda missed out on the GOO board)

That sounds cool. We should re-create it/one.

Anyone rebember the basics of it?

Jon Mance - September 14, 2006 04:29 PM (GMT)
It was a d20 chart, if I remember. I didn't read the details too much, since I didn't like it and didn't really plan on using hunting in my game.

Hunting is such a huge part of Westeros, I thought it would be helpful to dust off the old chart and see if anyone could make use of it. I suppose that I'll just work on something from the ground up and see what comes of it.

Grim Redeemer - September 14, 2006 08:24 PM (GMT)
It was very, very simplistic, and IIRC consisted simply of one or two D20 rolls that told you what animal you find after how much searching, after which you were supposed to have a combat with the animal in question.

Generally speaking, I would prefer making heavy use of Survival, with Knowledge: Local Area and/or Nature where applicable and Hide/Move Silently on the approach, plus a healthy amount of GM fiat. The most useful chart that I could think of would be of Survival DC modifiers for rarity of animal in different ecosystems, along with a basic reference for how often Survival should be checked and how much closer to certain types of animals it gets you per successful check or unit of time.

I came up with the preliminary (read: First Draft) chart I plan to use in my own D&D game. I'm sure it could be useful to those wanting a chart for hunting in a similar world (such as Westeros). It runs off of the premise of making a skill roll at the outset of the hunt to determine if any tracks are found in the first hour or so, and if found, what sort of tracks they are. Hunters can narrow down their hunt to classifications (small game, big game, fowl, fur-bearing, and predator) or even specific animals by modifying the DC or the initial tracking roll. If the hunter elects to follow the tracks (or look for the den, whatever), he makes a second skill roll to determine the results of the hunt, which would take another hour (or more if the hunting roll fails and the hunter keeps trying). Of course, if the hunter already knows where game is, like if he found a watering hole, or a guide told him, or whatever, the initial tracking roll could be skipped. blah blah blah. Anyhoo, the chart itself mostly consists of 39 animals (2d20) that can be readily found in a specific habitat (coastal, wetlands, polar, tundra, desert, jungle, forest, taiga, hills, mountains, plains and steppes. I'm sure I could split each down further into tinier slivers of habitat, but it just seemed like a little too much work to me. If anyone is interested, I can put my rough draft of each habitat up or just keep working on it alone until it's reached final draft.

Grim Redeemer - September 16, 2006 08:44 AM (GMT)
Sounds good to me, and I'd love to see the draft. I can't claim to be a great naturalist, but if I'm going to use your work in my game I could at least try to be of some assistance with it. :)

Not sure how to post excel sheets in this new forum, so I'll just list 'em out by habitat. Bear in mind it was made for a D&D world, so a few 'giant' and 'dire' animals would have to be replaced for AGOT. And, of course, the underground habitat wouldn't be used at all. I'm still debating whether or not to add some 'animalistic' monsters for D&D, like rust monsters (per Ed Greenwood/Elminster, they taste like chicken). Animals are arranged by initial DC, with small game first, then fowl, fur-bearers, big game, and finally predators. There's some wiggle room, like putting foxes (a tiny predator) as a fur-bearer. Generally I tried to group animals as they behave or are sought after as, rather than what they 'really' are. Raptors are omitted entirely, as no one except a milliner or tribesman of some sort would go hunting for them. Per my wife's suggestion, fish are omitted too, as the search for and capture of fish is done entirely differently than hunting. I do have some aquatic life on the charts (especially coastal and wetlands), but these are mostly creatures that can be spotted from land and trapped or killed on land or shallow water without the need for a net or fishing line.
