I've been doing some yard work over the past few days and it seems like there are a lot more critters about than this time last year. And by critters, I mean "bugs".

There's a wide variety of flies and parachuting spiders in the air, a swarm of bees somewhere nearby in the woods (the eerie hum is unmistakable) and the sheer number of ants underneath the scruff growth in the roadside ditch is unreal!

...Makes me miss the concrete sterility of apartment living sometimes. :)

Haven't heard there being more than normal, but I did observe my first spider yesterday. Not sure where they go in the winter, but they don't take long coming out once the weather turns. It's a good thing there are birds, spiders, bats, etc., or you can imagine how many crawlies would be around.

We just started see small black ants aorund the house this week , spiders are appearing again also. Marcia heard the first "peepers" of the season the other night also.
I also had a catapiller by the backdoor the other day also.

Haven't seen any of them here yet , if the warmer weather keeps up , it shouldn't be too long before they arrive.

I was in the valley last week and saw some ants, and lots of honey bees (but they will come out even in the winter on a mild sunny day). Here on the coast, I've seen a few spiders near the house, and sowbugs under rocks/boards, but the ants aren't moving yet.

Saw the first bee and ladybug in Antogonish this week and we heard the peepers for the first time two nights ago in Drum Head. Lots more bird sounds this past week as well.

Lots of ants here. I could hear quite a few frogs at the roadside today during my bike ride.

Witnessed first bug casualty of mine of the season ... right on my windshield ...figured it must have been a big bad horsefly or moosefly.
